Just looking at a 1995 bmw 325 for sale near me. Apparently it runs well but pops out of second gear. Is this a major problem and is this why the owner is selling? Any mechanics online???? any advice appreciated
Well, I dont think it'll take a mechanic to tell you it's a problem with the clutch or gearbox - a big problem. If it's just the clutch you're looking at £130 labour minimum, plus parts. Probably the guts of £300. If it's the gearbox.........well that's bad. Take the cost of a gearbox, 12 hours labour, and a new clutch and flywheel. Could be pricey.
Old Beemer's are generally good reliable cars if looked after well, but an old beemer with a gearbox or clutch problem = BIG BIG BIG bills to fix it, to the point of making most cars of a certain age uneconomical to fix!
mboy is spot on.
Beemers and Mercs hell I'd buy a 200k miles if it has full service history!
Bad gear box? could be electrical or mechanical with those things.
More mechanical if drops out-g-box is screwed.
Clutch will just spin uphill with revs increasing and car not speeding up.
Factor it into the price?
Get a quote for 2nd hand box.
Personally I think 98> 3 series models were great-based on 5 series E39.
I love beemers but not the few idiot owners that give it a bad name.
1995 BMW 325, classy. Unless you're paying £100 for it, or are a drug dealer/local bad boy, why would you want to buy it?
There are many many old 3series out there. This isnt the one. Its a gearbox-issue. You'll spend more than the cars worth to repair.
Gearbox fault. Depends on price and how much you want it.
Well just to be different, my brother used to have a 320d, that the manual gearbox used to get stuck in 2nd gear, problem with worn selectors or something aparently.
Wish he had mentioned this before I borrowed it and it stuck in 2nd on a slip road onto a motorway! Not funny at the time.
I would avoid tbh, loads of cheap second hand cars about, BMW gave my brother a heart attack of a quote to fix 😉
Maybe the linkage just needs adjusting?
The thing with BMW dealers though is you go in for a simple oil/filter change, come back with a list as long as you arm that need doing!
Flaperon, you could well be right 😉
Unless you are in the habit of rebuilding gearboxes yourself I'd give it a miss. If it ws easy to fix he'd have fixed it (but you know all this).
