I was running a sound bar in my garage gum with a seperate sub but it looked untidy in the wall with wires everywhere so I sold it. Bought some cheapie Bush sound tower thing to replace it and it’s utter arse. So I’m moving that on as well.

Looking online I found the Edifier D12 for £100 that’ll fit nicely in a shelf in the corner of the gym - just want a speaker to connect Spotify to for weight training - mostly listen to rap / hip hop / dance when weight training. I’ve got mains power right next to the shelf so doesn’t need to be battery operated.

Is there anything better for the money?

I just use a JBL Flip in the garage. It's more than enough for my needs, unless your garage is gigantic.

I just have an old echo Dot on a wall mount in the Garage. Do you need ultimate audio fidelity while you crash and huff about in an echoey concrete box?

I like a bit of angry bass - but not too worried about sound clarity. I used to have something years ago that looked a bit like the d12 that didn’t cost a fortune that did the job nicely until it went pop.

I’ll have a look at the Anker but I don’t need it to be rechargeable - that would actually be less convenient I think. I already have a Bose soundlink revolve I could use but it’s a bit too nice to keep in the garage / has a battery to recharge. I like my Anker Bluetooth headphones though.

Currently  £30 off Soundcore Anker Motion Boom Plus on Amazon UK with voucher applied.

I have smaller non plus version. waterproof and decent sound but you'd probably benefit from larger plus version from your OP

https://amzn.eu/d/5zI4GR p" rel="noopener" target="_blank">5th gen echo dot Currently £21 pretty much disposable at that price if you want, claims to have "vibrant sound" I'm sure the audiophiles will rubbish it, but if all you want is something to pump public enemy and Nas at you while you make those Gainz it'll probably do, you can always slave other speakers to it later if it's really not up to snuff...

The echo dot is only 1.8 watts output so I think I’ll swerve that one. The current crap bush one is 30w. The D12 is 70w.

Looks like the Anker Motion Boom Plus is 80w so looks like that might be a decent option.

Its a bit ugly but maybe something like this is a good option - 150w rms per speaker

That Audio Pro BT5 is the kind of thing I’m looking for - maybe a smaller version of that D12 I found, plus a bit cheaper 🤔

I ordered an Audio pro bt5 for the bedroom yesterday, hopefully it sounds better than the Cambridge audio minx 100 I have at the moment! As for the garage, 2 old bookshelf speakers a little amp and Chromecast, but lots of wires of course.

I have the non-plus motion boom and the sound is excellent for the price. I would definitely be looking at the motion boom plus if you want big sound though. Or two motion booms linked wirelessly.

@dougd - Nope but they have a lot to live up to with some of the prices.

If I wasn’t after something with mains power and it was to be moved around a lot the Bose Soundlink revolve is good - we have 2 of them and you can link them together wirelessly in party mode.

‘Im hoping for something with just a touch more bass though.

Weird, but i could swear those last couple of replies weren't there hence posting about the Minirigs. Honest!

They sound great for their size; enough to fill a decent garage sized room with punchy bass.

My son's UE Megaboom has migrated to the garage. Sounds really good. Think it may be a bit over budget though.

I'd get two bluetooth Edifier or Wharfedale speakers instead.  Will sound better.

Found the Edifier page. In budget is the D12 and possibly a couple of the pairs of speakers. But the D12 has a higher wattage output than the pairs of speakers despite being cheaper. Whatever I buy will be going on one shelf together rather than being spread out so not sure there’s any benefit of the 2 seperate speakers?

I was going to suggest these:

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/edifier-r1280db-studio-bookshelf-speaker-sp-04d-er.html

But I also noted that they seem to have a lower 'wattage' than the' all in one' D12. the drivers look the same and I can't see a single box solution being better than a stereo pair unless it has a smaller/weaker built in amp...more likely it's creative advertisers description of output power on the d12?

Even the edifier website says the stereo pair is 42w max, where as the D12 Total of 70 watts(RMS*) power output.

https://www.edifier.com/global/p/bookshelf-speakers/r1280db

https://www.edifier.com/global/p/wireless-speakers/d12

*Ahh, hello RMS, my old friend, exagerating audio output since the dawn of voice coils, hahah!

It wouldn't supprise me if both models have exactly the same amplifier built in, but they are reporting the output in different ways for differnt audiences. Might be worth dropping them an email though just to clarify..I'm kind of intersted myself.

Thanks for that - I’ll drop them an email and see what I get back. Both the d12 and r1280db are the same price on Amazon at the moment. You’d think they’d have the same amp really.

My shortlist now is probably

Edifier D12

Edifier R1280db / dbs

Panasonic SCUX100EK

Audio Pro BT5

I’m going to count out the Anker Motion Boom / Boom plus and UE Mega Boom as I don’t want / need something battery powered + that expensive. Just want a mains powered solution with a bit of rumble.

Same as my usual on these threads - something from AudioPro. Unbeatable sound at their respective price points.

Probably get shot down but a Wi-Fi speaker means your phone battery won’t drain and any notifications from it won’t interrupt your music.

I’m not sure the Wi-Fi thing is a big advantage to me. My max weight training session is probably 45-60 mins and I don’t find the music really gets interrupted by calls or emails.

My audio pro has just gone tits up after a few years. The App refused to work after a couple of months. It was great for Bass but struggled on the High Notes.

My Minirig of about the same age continues to sound great. I copes admirably throughout the range but if you want more bass, woofers are available, or put it in a cardboard box...

I like my edified d12. It’s great. Not hugely loud but good enough sound quality for me.

I’d suggest that there was possibly something wrong with it then. The app is shite so I just use Spotify, Deezer etc app instead.

I’ve got a Denon Envaya that I was just about to put in the classifieds. Hardly used and excellent condition. Really good sound and exceptionally good base. Probably perfect for you. I was probably going to ask for £50. Think it cost £150-200. I’ve got all the different coloured grills too.

@djflexure

Thanks for the offer - but as far as I can see that’s battery operated and maybe similar or less powerful than my Bose Soundlink Revolve?

I had a search and was hoping there would be a slightly more expensive / slightly more powerful audio pro model above the BT5 but there isn’t.

@sparksmcguff - I’m not after ultimate volume but it would be nice to have a bit of bass. How is it for that please?

I have emailed Edifier to see if they’ll reply as to the differences in d12 vs R1280dt and whether any of the models that are just a bit more expensive offer up any real benefit or not. See what they say.

There is an Amazon Prime sale offer coming up on the 10th and 11th October so hoping I pick which one I want and get an offer it…..

Did some more searching and found Edifier R1700bt in white for £129.99 which look very nice. Reviews online say they have better bass than the R1280s.  Ordered those and see how they go!

Thanks for the advice all - I wouldn’t probably have looked at the 2 speaker option rather than the all in one D12 / BT5

Look good..what hifi? critisized the ungainly bass a bit, but if you are seaking out somethng that's a bit bass heavy then maybe not a bad thing:

Im probably looking for a not entirely crisp bass if that’s what that review said - hadn’t found that one. Found a review comparing the R1280 vs the R1700 and it stated the 1700 was bassier due to the larger volume speaker box.

I also noticed it has a sub out socket and they sell an active sub so should I feel the need I could always pick on up at a later date but I doubt I’ll need it.

Picture below - they look pretty nice there and the gym walls are all white.

I'm sure they will be fine..the what hifi review is from back in 2015, and the boxes look slighty different so it looks like they have been re-designed/refined at some point.

Initial thoughts about the bt5, it's a fair bit smaller than I thought it might be, it sounds ok but not blown away by it.

Knowing my need to perfect and upgrade I'll probably keep an eye out for a c10mkii to try after this.

@toby1

Sounds like I did the right thing swerving the BT5 in that case. <br /><br />

The one you’ve mentioned trying next is another level cost wise whilst not being hugely more powerful. Although more connectivity and a bigger box / bigger woofer so probably sounds very decent. Will report back how these R1700s work out. <br /><br />

I know it seems you’ve made up your mind… but…

I picked up a samsung s61a sound bar on marketplace for about £80 (and i see a few on ebay for teh same).. mains powered… BT, WiFi, aux input..

If you’ve a plug next to the shelf, this thing goes mighty loud with decent bass…

I’m not a fan of wearing headphones whilst weight training for some reason. Happy wearing them on the turbo but not with weights 🤷‍♂️

On the sound bar front I just got rid of one of those - it was too long for the shelf I plan to put the Edifiers on and with a wire dangling to a sub it looked a bit messy. Also I find they miss a bit of mid range - it’s all top end but then getting overwhelmed by the sub.

Ive got a Samsung one linked to a tv in our back room - I have to have the sub on -12 bass otherwise it drowns out what people are saying during action films particularly. I’m actually wondering if some r1280dbs with the sub out put / optional little sub might be a better option than that sound bar 🤔

The above soundbar doesn't have a sub.. hence just one plug to power...

I've got it in my garage and it's plenty lound enough, with decent bass TBH

But like others - i'm jsut suggesting what i have!!! the edifier bunch look great too!<br /><br />DrP

Speakers arrived - they sound pretty epic tbh. Plenty for the home gym and the bass is very decent. Best not to put the bass round to full as it gets a bit much / loses a bit of control I’d say. Tested it with the usual songs - addicted to bass / gravel pit / various rap and dance stuff.

Need to sand and paint the shelf they’re sat on (probably white) and give the gym a general spruce up now.

Speakers look really smart:
