Mrs Reeksy and I have had enough of trying to watch TV with captions/low volume in an open plan 'house' with kids trying to sleep/listen in a few metres away so want some headphones. Thing is, the TV is 10 years old and doesn't support bluetooth. I have a 90s amp that we run the TV through for films sometimes and plug phones through a 3.5mm jack.
Am i right in thinking i could buy an analogue to BT hub that we could connect to the amp (or TV) and route through the TV and connect some BT headphones to and also be able to play music of phones/iPads etc?
If so, are there any recommendations?
Any better options or alternatives?
Just plug a bt transmitter into the headphone socket on the amp, not sure why you'd want to be routing it through the TV.
I ran a set of sennheiser TV headphones (so wireless, but with a transmitter) for ages. Worked absolutely flawlessly unlike most Bluetooth stuff imo, especially when there are multiple paired devices in range, but wouldn't work with iPads.
You could. I suppose an advantage of this approach is that you’d be able to control your volumes independently for your individual headphone pairs. Assuming you watch together that is.
Make sure you get a modern one BT 4 or 5. Otherwise there’ll be l a a a g and your AV non-sync will drive you crazy. Plug it into a line out rather than the headphone socket. That way you’ll only need to fiddle with the headphone volume to get the right level.
Also, you might need 2? Unless you can find one that supports multiple connections.
Despite the wrangling, wires would be easier. When I listen late at night I use a pair of AKG headphones or my IEMs plugged into a long headphone cable extender. The nylon-wrapped cables are easy to roll up and I just pop mine in a drawer for next time.
You’d also be able to add a Y-adapter for dual listening.
not sure why you’d want to be routing it through the TV.
One thing that occurs to me, is the possibility of the sound not syncing properly between what you’re watching, and what you’re hearing. Particularly annoying when it’s people speaking. It used to happen sometimes with my old Sky box.

I meant more that the TV would go through the amp if that makes sense?
Syncing issues would indeed be a PITA ... although wires would be even more annoying potentially.
Line out would definitely be an option - there's plenty spare.
I'll have a chat with the hifi store and see what I can get.
