Minimal effort and pictures of mtb/hills/dogs from me on swearyprof.bsky.social. My output will improve once Keeper of the peak (@kofthep) switches over there.

It's a nice place to be.

Is there any appetite for a STW feed/starter pack? If so will put something together in front of the telly later.

Anyone know if it's possible to follow a hashtag? If I click on one it'll bring up loads of results but I can't seem to save the search.

This will be the link to the list https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:7zra35cygaahtxsifwyldwzz/lists/3laz4qoe43q24 - can someone check they can see it?

Please can you DM me, here if it’s working or at @andydrummond.bsky.social if you’d prefer, if you don’t mind being added to it.

I'm there: https://bsky.app/profile/tom-cb.bsky.social

Academia around environmental politics and rural geography mainly. I don't really do social media so will see how it pans out. Happy to see some biking stuff in my feed though ?

How does the list work then? Does it compile all the posts people in the list have commented on?

Looks fine to me.

I'm very happy to see most of hte orgs I used to follow on Twitter are here now so it will be interesting to see how it works.  Twitter was just too toxic to submit yourself to regularly

Has anyone investigated any of the 3rd party apps for Bluesky? I'm finding having to to the top of my feed to get it to refresh and scroll back to where I was is killing the experience. I just want to be able to scroll 'up' till I hit the latest post.

So - the list. If you can see it, there should be an option to ‘Pin to Home’ and then it will appear at the top of your feed (a bit like the ‘Following’/‘For You’ tabs in X).

When you open it you should see a feed of posts by people on the list, and then a sub-tab with the list members. I’ve been adding people but as above please DM me if you’ve been missed off, or if you want taking off it.

Joined, and already unimpressed at seeing barrister Naomi Cunningham flagged for “intolerance” for posting legal opinions on her area of expertise. Agree or not, it looks like the platform has same sort of moderation Twitter used to have.

You know it’s reached some kind of critical mass when someone as social media resistant as me has signed up:

https://bsky.app/profile/fotovoyager.bsky.social

Mostly to make sure I own the name I use for work. I’ll set up another one for bikepacking type stuff if it gets any traction.

Also, it feels quite good to annoy Musk in even the teeny tiniest of ways.

Was never a Twitter user so watching this out of curiosity,  but just seen on Ye Olde Facebooke that Torm are trialling Bluesky as traffic from Twitter has dried up.

So if you want a nice cycle jersey, they are now over there too (waves vaguely in that direction due to lack of understanding)

Would that be the Naomi Campbell that attracted this response?

A list specifically for users who have pushed that special kind of British transphobia. If you've made it onto this list and you're not British, congratulations on the double shame of being an anti-trans rights conspiracy theorist and acting like a Brit.

That sort of thing is not welcome at all over on BlueSky.

Yes, that could be Naomi Cunningham (I haven’t seen the comment so don’t know for sure). A barrister specialising in discrimination law.

I use Twitter for the politics, basically. I don’t see the point in political forum where one side gets censored. There are limits, as always, but the opinions of barristers is a long way from where those limits ought to be.

Don’t know the details of that particular case but I think that’s a block list set up by a user (or group of users) rather than some form of censorship by the platform. Only those who actively subscribe to the list will block its members so you’re free to choose to see it or not.

@stevious I wasn't talking about that list, but that her account and all her posts have been flagged for "Intolerance" by the Bluesky Moderation Service.

Yes Cunningham, it had been a long day and I defaulted to the supermodel surname. For an equality/discrimination lawyer to wade into a new platform on a transphobic kick is a bit of an own goal and undermines her stance. It also shows that some barristers are not the paragons of fair play and equality that they are held up to be.

I've seen it pointed out that tolerance from one side that is not respected by the other is abuse and it would appear that Ms Cunningham does not extend tolerance to the trans community who it appears have fought back against the sea-lions  and their intolerance.

@sandwich I think you're missing the point.

The blocklist A Very British Bigotry was created by the anonymous Bluesky user "hedgehogsafety", and being added to it doesn't prove that Cunningham is transphobic any more than it undermines her opinions as a successful employment and discrimination lawyer. But that's a topic for a separate thread.

The point I was making is that Bluesky is shaping up to be the kind of platform where differing opinions are shut down in the name of tolerance. I'd rather see some actual discussion, even if it means filtering out the various truther types and chemtrail cranks.

Edit: I also follow several hedgehog accounts on Twitter 😀

doesn’t prove that Cunningham is transphobic

Other than being senior in a transphobe organisation funded by Ms Rowling, if it walks like a duck. . . (EDIT the group was chosen at random, I believe Ms C is listed on several Transphobic lists not just that one).

One can not discuss anything with those in cult-like organisations it's not worth the effort, their minds are not for persuading, ever.

I feel like you're making my point for me. If you think whole groups of people are entirely unreachable and their opinions should be suppressed rather than engaged with, then it's highly likely they're not the ones in a cult.

You're not suppressing their opinions, they are free to express them to the limit of what the site owner wishes. You're simply limiting your interaction with them.

Using a sort-of real world analogy, most of us recognise that if you visit a pub where the lounge bar is full of drunk, braying racists, you could engage them and try to change their minds (some people enjoy argument and confrontation). The alternative, if you just want a pleasant evening free of drunk, braying racists, is to go into the other bar or choose a different pub. Obviously, it's possible that not everyone in the lounge bar is a DBR, and you're missing out on enlightening discussions on art, cinema or even politics. But sometimes removing yourself from potentially toxic environments makes for a better night out.

I just want to look at pictures of mushrooms or newly-discovered galaxies, TBH.

This is what I've been talking about, ie that the Bluesky official mods are censoring her on that platform. And a barrister who's won numerous cases and is posting in a professional capacity about her area of expertise is not at all like "drunk, braying racists". It's a ridiculous comparison to make.

You’re simply limiting your interaction with them.

Yes, blocking and blocklists, which Sandwich was talking about, can certainly be useful if you want to place limits on what you might read or who can see or respond to your posts. But if imagoody.bksy.social creates a blocklist called "baddies", it doesn't mean the people on it are actually baddies, or that you're a goody if you use it.

Generally I'd rather moderation that concerned itself with abuse rather than opinions, and certainly not with opinions that have passed the test of many employment tribunals.

I'll take the flounce now, as the topic could be its own thread and I don't fancy starting one!

The contents of the blocklist may be mixed, but if it contains enough people who I definitely don't want on my feed, I'm willing to forego the company of a few interesting bystanders who perhaps shouldn't be on that list. That's the pub analogy I was aiming for.
