The clubber household has been home to various lurgies for the last 2+ months now. I rarely get ill but seem to be really suffering from a throat infection.

It started out as just a pretty sore throat - swollen tonsil on one side and very sore to swallow.

I went to the docs' 9 days ago - I was told it's viral and to just take paracetamol and ibuprofen.

It seemed on the way out a day or two after that but then got worse (Xmas day was fun...)

I went to the docs' yesterday as per their directions. Still viral only. Keep on the ibuprofen and paracetamol

Today is now the worst it's been. Very sore throat and splitting headaches on the same side as the swollen tonsil. I get about 1-2hrs respite from the pills but the rest of the time, I'm no use to anyone and I'm losing out on family time.

So, what else can I do or take? My concern is that this is going to drag on for several more days...

Both are tempting but the logical side of my brain tells me they'd make things worse...

The antispetic and local anaesthetic strepsil type lozenges work for me when i have a sore throat. What ever the own brand ones are - never ever pay the extra for branded stuff here.

I started having a sore throat on Sunday then had the same symptoms come Monday, very painful to swallow, headaches and problems sleeping. Indeed Christmas Day was one I will not forget in a hurry! Tried the same as you including anti septic spray and beechams powders. Went to the doctors yesterday and got prescribed anti biotics (amoxicillin) for 5 days. After one days treatment it has become bearable with the sore throat, I am able to eat now! I would get yourself to A doc tomorrow and tell them you need something stronger.

I would suggest steam and plenty of it.Also sanderson's throat specific mixture and vocalzone throat pastiles but mainly steam perhaps with some friars balsam added.

I've been suffering with a mild sore throat since the end of the summer, it wasn't getting better so I went to the doc, he wasn't sure so he referred me to a consultant. When I got to see the consultant he said I think we'll book you in for a Tonsillectomy/Biopsy the next week (17th Dec). I've been surprised just how painful even having one tonsil out is, but they do tell me its a much worse op as you get older (I'm 55). The consultant left a message on the answerphone this afternoon and said he'd be writing me a letter with the results of the Biopsy. 😯
I'm also booked in for a neck MRI scan on Monday.

Had an ear and throat infection for a few days and found gargling aspirin and swallowing really helped.

For some reason doctors seem reluctant to provide antibiotics for strep-throat these days. I had it once where they kept telling me it was viral, it was viral, it was viral, until I got a fever and headaches and finally got diagnosed with tonsilitis, which for all intents and purposes is bacterial!

I used to get symptoms exactly like that on a six monthly cycle until it turned into quinsy one newyears day
which had me in hospital on an antibiotic drip for three days
then when it had subsided had mt tonsils out three months later at 47 not a pleasant experience .
been great ever since .
if the pain os so bad get in to hospital and get a second opinion from A n E

Having a gp as a father in law, usually even if it lasts 4 weeks, it will go eventually. Welcome to the modern nhs.

Ok, so tonsillitis means "inflammation of the tonsil". It doesn't necessarily mean a bacterial infection. Ergo, antibiotics may not be indicated.
You can identify the likelihood of it being bacterial with a 'scoring system'.

Yes, its a faff to feel ill and crummy over Christmas, however, just because it's toiled on doesn't mean modern medicine has anything helpful to offer.
If you can't swallow, if you feel Really ill, or are unable to open the jaw fully, then I'd get reassessed.

The more people asking for "something stronger" does get a bit draining, as there really is little more that can be offered if not indicated.
There seems to be some myth that GPs are "holding back" antibiotics -well we are, but only because the vast majority of URTIs are self limiting, and we are creating a society of antibiotic resistance by dishing out antibiotics willy nilly.

You wouldn't ask for the contraceptive pill for a broken leg, so dont ask for antibiotics for a 3 day cough!!!!

Anyway, Clubber: heal well! Rest, brufen, and time really.....

That's really what I was after, ta. if that's the case clearly it's just mtfu which I can live with.

Have a go with some 500mg chewable vitamin C tablets along with the pain-killers.

Suffering myself at the moment - sore throat and swollen tongue leading to a plague of ulcers. Been coming and going for weeks now - blood tests show nothing. Raw garlic seems to help so trying more of that and vit B complex... if all else fails back to the docs early in January

1 year ago I had the same as you. Turned out to be a strep infection which then turned into Guttate Psoriasis. Google image that for a fright!

Months of itchy and scratchy cream didn't help. Eventually got referred to hospital for 3 months of sunbeds which luckily cleared it up.

I now run out the room when someone announces that they have a sore throat.

Gargle three times a day with Corsodyl, it is really excellent for bad throats. You can even use it to fight off a cold.

If I had willy nilly Id expect antibiotics and the strongest.

OP. As far as I know, white blotches on the tonsils tends to suggest a bacterial infection, so antibiotics would work. There is a natural herb sage or thyme (you would need to check) which when boiled with water and gargled has mild antibiotic effects.

White blotches don't mean a great deal, but are fun to fish out with a lolly stick...

DrP - my idea of fun might be different from yours!

My 'strep throat', which wasn't treated with antibiotics (Doc told my mum that I was a malingering child), turned into Rheumatic Fever.
You really don't want that, I can tell you.
