Impressed by the hatred & anti Liverpool sentiment that has suddenly appeared on this thread...

No matter what happens Liverpool have exceeded their own expectations this season.

From the neutral perspective surely Liverpool winning the Premier league is a good thing, pretty sure Chelsea & Man City will keep winning it for the foreseeable future & it's in danger of becoming like Scotland or La Liga (even though it looks like Athletico might win there, provided they don't blow it!)

Wow there's some very bitter people on here aren't there.

That last 20 mins or so was some of the most pathetic football i've ever watched from a 'title chasing' team. Thats how you really throw it away.

Yeah, I guess the defence they've been getting away with having for most of the season has finally bitten them in the arse. Oh well.

It ain't over until it's over.

I'm a city fan, and am full of praise for Liverpool this season. Bit of half-decent early season form and they would have been home and dry already.

Yeah. Just like all the hate/glee at others misfortune seen on the other long standing football thread this year.

I think you could have done with a bus from Jose....

They needed a favour from west ham or villa, now they need a bigger one. It ain't dusted yet.

Although, on current form, they might need both to do them a favour, because the mighty mags are coming to poop the party next weekend!!

Have to say as a Liverpool fan, the last 15 minutes was the worst I have seen Liverpool for a long time, I can rant about Sakho v agger all night but we have been struggling since Henderson got suspended.

I still say, if anyone gave us the option of being in this position at the start of the season, I would have bitten their hand off. Great season for a team that finished 7th last year.

Still a great season for Liverpool and guaranteed Champions League football. Lots of optimism about the football we play and the way our club is run, oh and our great young manager. How many of the sad, bitter people who have just come out of the woodwork can say the same about their club?

Hmmmm, well run clubs with European trips to look forward to - my family's home town team are Newcastle and my home town team are Reading. I'd swap with you any day........

(Edit - not that I'm one of the sad bitter ones. I'd love Liverpool to do it, failing that city. Just not Chelsea)

Be interesting to see who ends the season now with most goals scored. Liverpool and City were even Stevens before tonight's game on goals scored and matches played.

You have to take your hat off to Palace though. They were quality tonight! I wouldn't bet against them causing some more serious upsets at the top next season. It all makes for great football. I still think it's going to go to the wire

Wow there's some very bitter people on here aren't there.

It's a football thread on STW. That's going to happen. No point in getting wound up about it. Tonight was massively disappointing, but it was the Chelsea result what done it really...and the defence has looked shaky in the final quarter of the season. Chelsea and City choked plenty of times before they wrestled the trophy from Utd. Arsenal choke every season. Liverpool fans have to suck it up and learn to live with this one and hope for similar levels of performances next season. There's the added bonus of European nights at Anfield without having to play in the summer for them.

This I believe is due to the media frenzy in favour of Liverpool who gave them the trophy weeks ago and dragged out every ex Liverpool player to lord it over us. Then the mis-informtion that only Man City have ever spent any money. Andy Carroll,Juan Sebastian Veron, louis Saurez,Rio Ferdinand etc to mention a few prove this is bias media brain washing exercise that has worked well on the weak minded masses.

it really is Newcastle all over again.

Newcastle had a 10-point lead at Christmas, Liverpool are/were in the mix towards the end of the season, nowhere near the same. abysmal shout.

I'm a Liverpool fan, been attending since 79 so seen good times and indifferent. I'm a realist and I believe level headed too and like so many Red fans, the target was a top 4 finish which considering the squads of the top Prem teams. I thought was going to be a difficult task but hopefully it would happen. Low and behold to then be drawn into a fight off the title, it was a great blast and beyond what I expected and yeah I dreamt the good times could return. Sadly, Henderson's sending off, our defences total inability to defend and I'm afraid to say Rodgers bad tactics, that dream of a title has gone. But win against Newcastle and its second and if City screw up, which I don't see happening, the title could slip into our hands so I'm still smiling and still happy as there's more than one team in the league who would love swap places with us and that's all that matters.

Good club Liverpool, proper history etc. and they've had a fantastic season no matter what happens from here.

I just can't bring myself to wish the best for a team with Suarez in it.

I'm a little surprised at the anti Liverpool comments, Suarez aside I'd much rather see Liverpool win it than City or Chelsea, City are still arguing about financial fair play and what penalty they should be subject to. You cannot begrudge Gerrard a PL title given his career and loyalty to the club.

It's not over and city will be reminding their players that. They have had their share of dropped points this season too. Points on the board are there games in hand need to be played and upsets happen especially at this end of the season.

Its called managing expectations. We're presently still getting our heads around the concept.

Arsenal will never win the Premiership again. The collapse at the end of the season is now hard-wired into their DNA. Its a self-fulfilling prophecy

A lot of clubs would love the consistently that Wenger brings esp given the financial constraints and the injuries (and the link between them). Ok, he has his wobble every season when he and the team go AWOL but ultimately pulls it back in the end.

What an utter crock of sh1t Binners.....you're clearly muddling us up with the Spuds! We haven't figured in the title race for years, let alone choked! Last year we were the fastest finishing team in the league so do try and get your facts right!

There were a number of reasons why Arsenal dropped off the pace, but choking wasn't one of them.

I completely disagree! To want teams like Citeh and Chelski to win, shows a fundamental lack of understanding of the damage those two teams are inflicting on English football. If LFC had won, then they would have deserved it..... unlike the other two who 'buy' their trophys!

5th in the spending league So hardly a model of fiscal prudence are they. It's teams like arsenal and Everton who are performing above their spending, surprise surprise they have won very little in the last 5 years, much like Liverpool.

Damage to English football my arse, the establishment of a big 3 or 4 teams that nobody could touch was damaging, at least city and chelsea have upset the natural order. It is also pretty clear that despite the stated objectives, the ffp rules are about nothing but protecting the old order big teams.

Wheres Man Citys other trophies?

How are Liverpool not performing above their spending? Look at how much less they've spent per season than Man City and Chelsea (who they're still above in the league for now). Never mind Man U.

Yep, and it will show Liverpool in the top three, qualifying for the group stages of the Champions League automatically. What looked to be a pretty tough ask, getting into the top 4, has proved pretty straightforward. Pity about chucking the title away, but they were way off the pace in January until winning 11 games in a row. Defence has been poor of late especially and not good enough to win the league - I think only Spurs and Man U 😆 have failed to score against Liverpool in the league. You defend as a team though so maybe they'll need to focus a little less on attacking.

I'm not too convinced by the argument that thus represents their best, or only chance of the title either, given the distraction of the Champions League next season. Rodgers will be given money to strengthen the side and squad and will learn from this season - he seems flexible and will surely tilt the balance a bit more toward defending next year! He worked under Jose so should know what it takes to park the bus. Being in the Champions League attracts the best players, players who turned Liverpool down last summer and in January, the likes of Wilian etc. The Champions League is a tough, tough competition as well and it may be that hey'll only play 6 games. I don't think that would affect the league campaign too adversely, especially with a bigger, better squad. Suarez could be tempted by Real Madrid which would of course though....

Champions League football will be tough for Liverpool next season. Apart from Gerrard, there is bugger all experience of UCL football in the squad. City, Arsenal and (thankfully) Chelsea, were all shown up in the end, though arguably, red cards did it for Arsenal and City. Chelsea just folded comically, which for what seemed like anybody but Chelsea fans, was a joy to watch. There can't be many fans who wouldn't want their side in it for the group stages at least. It's a money spinner both in gate receipts and TV revenues and attracting big names. A strengthened squad may well qualify for for the knockouts, though not much further. Rodgers has no European experience - and I don't think he has the nous to close out two-legged knockouts away from home. And, as we have seen, Anfield has been far from, coff, impervious to opposition attacks. 😆

Anyway, when did a side not in the UCL last win the premiership/premier league?

I love the way some seem to feel this is a disaster for Liverpool.

This is still an epic epic season, destroyed club record after record, finished with a 30+ goalscorer for the first time in forever, along with a 20... Battled at the top of the league until the last day, normally our season is over before Xmas, this season it's gone to the final day.

Straight into next years champions league to battle the big boys of European football...

TBH, I think it's bloody marvellous. OK, so we're not going to win the league.. but we're not 7th either.

Where've you been Hora? Arsenal choked. Same as they do every season! Its as predictable as rain in Lancashire

Fundamentally disagree. Main factor in our inability to maintain our title push was Ramsey, and then Walcott, then Wilshere, then Ozil, getting injured. In fact for a crucial part of the season we were missing pretty much our whole first choice midfield. As soon as Ramsey went we lacked real penetration from midfield and it was much easier for teams to nullify our threat. The big scores wouldn't have happene if those four had consistently been fit and playing. In previous years we would have won the title if RvP had managed to stay fit for more than half a season. Granted he did in 2011-2012 but we had a disastrous start to the season. Hardly choked though as for 2/3 of the season we were the best team, just ran out of games to make up the deficit. In 2010-2011 we were hands down the best team in the league, but I will admit to a little bit of pressure affected results as we threw away a 4-0 lead at St James Park and 2-0 up v West Brom turned to a 2-3 loss. But if we lose the Cup to Hull then I'll accept the tag and eat my hat

FWIW I wouldn't tag Liverpool as chokers just yet. They were unlucky against an unbelievably negative Chelsea (and after his comments about Allardyce and last century football I don't know how Mourinho can look at himself in the mirror) and against Palace they were undone by their willingness to go forward in search of goal difference. I for one hope that Citeh lose to West Ham which, given that the Hammers have form with Manchester clubs on the last day of the season can't be ruled out!

...at the end of the day, Man City trolled everyone. Only top of the league for 11 days this season, and looks like they are going to snag it.

As for Arsenal...well, I guess it's true, and possession means **** all these days 😡

Days spent at the top of the PL this season:

Arsenal 128
Chelsea 64
Liverpool 59
Man City 11
Man Utd 2

As a fellow City fan I know where you are coming from. All logic says that City should easily win the league now given that we only need to draw but I would not be at all surprised if we gift West Ham a goal on Sunday just to make things hard for us.

I will still have nightmares until the game is played - dreamt about the 1990 Bournemouth home game last night. 3-0 up at half time and needed a win to go up. They equalised with a penalty (scored by Luther Blissett) deep in injury time.

Luckily we have real characters - Zabba, Kompany, MDM, Silva etc. - who can be trusted to go about things in a professional manner and not get carried away.

How quickly triumph can turn to despair, and vice versa, eh? Obviously Man Utd know the feeling from a final day a couple of seasons ago, just as they dealt it out to Bayern in the CL final.

And of course, Liverpool handed out the same medicine on the same occasion to the same team. This looks likely to be just the other side of the coin.

I remember sitting in a tent in the Lakes in deep depression having turned off the Gillingham playoff final commentary off with us two goals down with a few minutes to play.

It won't be over for me until the final whistle on Sunday.

I've got City mates who still think they're going to have the last Premiership taken off them on a technicality unearthed by the FA, and also refuse to bank on anything until the final whistle on Sunday.

This is in stark contrast to some of the Liverpool fans I know, who've been crowing as if its been in the bag for weeks, and these last 5 or 6 games were just a formality. The silence from them, since the Chelski game, has been deafening

Obviously, as a Man Yoo fan I know that feeling of crushing disappointment on the last day. I blame Joey Barton personally 😉 I think most United fans are heading to a similar frame of mind about things. Looking at the quality of the teams above us, anything less woeful than this season will do. I took my daughter to her first game, Sunderland, last Saturday. It was utterly dismal! 🙁

What makes you feel better, winning the league or not going down?
As a Hammer I only know the elation of the latter.

TBH going down never bothered me too much although falling into the third tier was pretty worrying.

Before the takeover City were never really going to compete for top honours so promotion campaigns were something to relish and we played some great football.

I probably enjoyed the promotion season under Kevin Keegan more than any other - watching Berkovic, Ali Bernabia, SWP, Huckerby and the Goat terrorise teams was enthralling. The promotions to the top tier under Mel Machin and Joe Royle were pretty good too.

The promotion campaign that ended with the play-off win against Gillingham was excruciating. Every team wanted to beat us and raised their game - it was draining and Big Joe deserves enormous credit for steering us through it.

Winning the Prem as we did two years ago was amazing - to snatch it off your biggest rivals with the last kick unbelievable - even better feeling than beating them 5-1 in 89 at Maine Road!

Chelsea just folded comically, which for what seemed like anybody but Chelsea fans, was a joy to watch.

I'm not a Chelsea fan, and thought they did a great job in the CL.

Would have been calamitous not to have escaped that season - administration possibly? Carrying a lot of prem contracts down two tiers.
Quite a turn-around.

So kind of as expected Suarez is gone.

If they reinvest the money back into the team, it will be interesting to see how they do, they started last season pretty well without him and Rogers has got players who looked decidedly average before looking pretty decent.

It is going to be another interesting year. Arsenal look to be getting some good players, United are investing and have a better manager but still in transition, and city may lose Yaya which will be a loss, but with the financial penalties imposed by eufa may give them some wiggle room investing again.
