Must be awful for the family after all this time, but how have I missed this story after all these years - the linked timeline is horrendous!
BBC News - Daniel Morgan: Delay to report on axe murder 'kick in teeth'
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-57165909
This the investigator with an axe in his head that most everyone thinks was murdered by the cops, right?
Gotta say, it's looking pretty odds-on that everyone's been covering up from the Home Office downwards.
I think this report may give more idea of the vested interests in the matter
Blimey, makes Line of Duty seem tame…
The case was specifically name checked on Line Of Duty. There's a decent podcast series about it that's worth checking out.
Could Kier Starmer not read it out in parliament?
The family called on Ms Patel to "try to understand...the need for sensitivity and basic human decency
good luck with that!
@james-rennie It's "Untold - The Daniel Morgan Murder", Peter Jukes is the guy behind it, started in 2016. I would have posted better info earlier if I'd been able to remember off the bat!
I'll look into that podcast, thanks
Updates have appeared from time to time in Private Eye.
It certainly doesnt seem to be one of the Mets finest hours.
I think everyone's prints are all over it aren't they, from Murdoch's papers, to the Met to Home office. Wasn't there a trial that collapsed? (conveniently)
I've just worked through the 'Untold' podcast and its pretty astonishing stuff. And great investigative journalism. Although a bit jarring for Peter Jukes and his assistant to suddenly switch from the murky world of corruption to do a Beer 52 ad! but i guess these things have to be paid for.
I don't want to 'spoil' it for any new listeners. Suffice to say, you have a pretty good idea of who dun it and why (although the precise reasons may be linked to drug smuggling) as much as we all know who the Stephen Lawrence murderers are.
There are also links to a 'suicide' in the months after Morgan's murder. In answer to the above question you lose count of the collapsed trials and inquests. For any lawyers out there the trial bundle had upwards of a million documents in it! The final prosecution (which collapsed before trial) is particularly frustrating as there were 4 supergrass witnesses and...(don't want to spoil).
At the end of the day - it stinks. It will make you very angry towards the police, rupert murdoch and the media - as well as the grubby individuals involved.
It makes perfect sense that Murdoch's shill - Patel - is now obfuscating and messing the Morgan family about. I don't expect the panel report on Monday to solve anything or give the Morgan family any closure at all. It'll just be more of the same.
And you'll feel anger about and sympathy for the Morgan family, who - whether they like it or not - have been plunged into a lifelong battle with the police/media establishment and now are getting f)))))ed around again by the Government. If I was Alistair Morgan I like to think I'd have done some vigilante act on the individuals involved by now, lets face it he's been imprisoned by the establishment for the past 34 years anyway.
The episode 'masters of the dark arts' in Series 2, in particular, focuses on the working practice of the sunday tabloids in the 90s and 00s and that reeks. They interview 2 former tabloid journos who pull no punchs. Like the journo who got his mates to pretend to be criminals so he could invent a story about them etc.
Anyway, get listening. Its the perfect primer for the report release on Monday. Its headspinning actually.
That's my weekend listening sorted, thanks....
I think I name checked it elsewhere, but Bent Coppers on iplayer is also very good. Although it doesn’t deal specifically with this case it does talk about corruption in the 70s and 80s in the Met and City of London. Really interesting and terrible at the same time. Amazing that one of the most senior bent coppers went on to receive awards for his service. It is to my mind just the most appalling abuse of trust…
Ah good old 'National Security'.
Hearing that term come from someone relatively benign and trustworthy always makes me raise my eyebrows.
Coming from the evil weeble Priti Patel it sends a chill down my spine.
It really only begs one question (for starters):
Who's pocket is she in now?
Channel 4 did a 3 part documentary on the case last year titled "Murder in the Car Park". Just checked it can be streamed from All4.
If anyone wants a short introduction to the latest events then David Allen Green was on The Bunker:

He recommends Untold for the full details.

Cheers I'll watch it, I was looking for that. It can't possibly be the deep dive the untold podcast is but will be good to put faces to names. Although I've already seen Rees and Fillery's and the Viens fat faces
If you like police corruption investigations maybe try No Stone Unturned, and read the shenanigans around trying to turn over the reporters to be really horrified.
No real surprises on the report, sadly, more a statement of the obvious from the high level reports I've read.
BBC News - Daniel Morgan: Met Police accused of corruption in report
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-57484219
Now halfway through the podcast and fascinated. And shouting " but how...." at regular intervals
I presume the delay was for Cressida Dick to get her house in order before falling on her sword... Delete those messages from Priti before you hand in your phone...
Shocking but sadly not at all surprising. Will be interesting to see if she does go but my suspicion is not. Met, closely followed by City of London, is a truly terrible force. I do feel incredibly sorry also for the good officers trapped in such an appalling organisation…
Could Kier Starmer not read it out in parliament?
he'll just bury it with the Forde report he's been desperately throwing around anyone who can hide it.
In a similar vein, this [whatever it is] by the BBC is rather good about the Lynette White ("Cardiff Four") case.
Was it just me or did it sound a bit like Patel was having an orgasm when she was talking about 'corruption'?
Both in the sense of "look it wasn't on me" and just for lustre of it.
Met, closely followed by City of London, is a truly terrible force.
They certainly seemed determined to hang on to, at any cost, their "reputation" when I think anyone with half a brain can see that no-one thinks their reputation is worth a shit. After being branded as Institutionally racist after Lawrence, to be accused of Institutionally corrupt after this report, It surely has to go?
I think rather than another high level resignation, I think it's probably time for force wide disbandment and reconfiguration into smaller regional London forces.
Then they’ll get to explain why how a murder suspect can also be a serving firearms officer.
Was it just me or did it sound a bit like Patel was having an orgasm
I'll be honest, I don't know her well enough to comment...🤪
