Quick one - are these a thing (Google suggests so) and do they actually work? We have Venetian blinds up in our bedroom and in the summer they're not great, but equally I'd always thought blackout roller/Roman blinds don't give the balance between privacy and daylight...

I can't remember if venetian ones are the vertical ones or the horizontal ones, but I can't imagine you'd ever get a proper/decent blackout from a slatted blind, cos there's always a bit of a gap between the slats even if they're shut.

What about a rollerblind for blackout behind a venetian for privacy?

Venetian are the horizontal ones, and I think you're right. Roller in front of the Venetian blind might be the answer if I can persuade my wife.

In our old house we had floor to ceiling blackout curtains with a pelmet and with everything closed it was as dark as the inside of a cow even in high summer.

You can get dual roller blinds – one part is the blackout, the other is a privacy blind for daytime.

Proper blackout blinds seem to slide in some kind of rail around the side of the window so there is no room for light leakage around the edge.

I think you'd something like these which you could use at night, coupled with venetian or vertical blinds for use in the daytime. The ones I link to, are basically on/off so you can't really adjust.
I'm debating something like this for my daughter's room, as it's east facing and gets very bright/warm first thing in the morning.

These are cassette blinds - we've got them in the on call rooms at work and they are excellent. French-style external blinds also work quite well...

There's always going to be a degree of light leakage but I just want to make it better.

Incidentally, how do you make a Venetian blind?

Poke him in the eye innit.

Carry on.

I am very sensitive to light pollution and, around this time of year, rarely sleep properly after 6am 🙄

When I was a child my Dad got fed up with me waking up so early at the weekends. He made some 'blinds' for my bedroom windows from 8' x 4' sheets of Hardboard. They stood on the windowsill, behind the curtains and the curtain rail, and made it very easy for me (and him!) to sleep much later 🤣

They were stored behind the wardrobe during the day.

Hmmm, those IKEA Hoppvals blinds are just the thing I’m looking for for my bedroom; during the summer, I tend to have the front and back windows open, the room faces North/South, and I can manage with those eye-mask things, but in the winter, I’m more likely to have lights on, so those are just the ticket. Thanks! 😎
