I need a dinner suit for a works do in a few weeks. I have one but it is now too big for me and looks daft. I’m still shifting the weight so I’m not sure if buying one now is the best idea.

What would STW do? Buy a cheap one (it needs to look good and be comfortable) and use it a couple of times or hire a suit and wait to buy one that will last me a few years?

How too big is it? Could it be altered?

I would recommend buying a kilt and suitable accessories.

It’s a 44 or 46 inch jacket. I’m not 38 - 40 inch jacket. The trousers are like clown pants.

Rent one, get it so it fits right for today, unless you are Scottish then a kilt might do. If your not Scottish you will just look like an idiot in a kilt

I’m not Scottish so the kilt option is out.

I was in a similar position - but as well as the works do where a few of us planned to wear black tie, I had another xmas do where I could wear it. I bought online for about £80. Chatted to one of my colleagues who'd rented and extended the hire period to cover his wife's works do. He'd paid £80 as well and had to give it back after. I've still got mine - but then I'm not losing weight and it should fit me for quite some time.

Go to SLATERS and buy a cheap one. They do free alterations so it will be a good fit.  I did this a few years ago and it has more than paid for itself vs a hire one

Last dinner suit I bought was from m&s for £50. I’ve worn it twice so cheaper than hiring. When I’ve hired suits they’ve not been a lot better quality.
Actually they’ve gone up £89 to buy now:

I had this dilemma a couple of years ago and ended up getting a second hand M&S diner suit from e-bay for £40 which was about the same as hiring - once you take into account the going to collect and then returning the hire suit etc.

How often are you going to wear it ?
Do you attend lots of black tie "do's"..if the answer is no ..then rent one..
Styles also change ( subtely)..so going down this route keeps you up to date .
