You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Love these guys, have 4 or 5 albums, have seen them live and just enjoying randomly perusing tracks on YouTube with a beer.
I think I missed their heyday, but it seems like they should have been pretty massive? Or was their sound just a bit heavy/slow to really kick off?
I find the image a bit confusing, they seem to do cigarettes and alchohol and black denim pretty well, but they also seem like proper dedicated professionals, when we saw them they were on third encore or something daft when we had to leave to catch a train, and there's videos of the lead singer doing acoustic sets in the car park after gigs! 😎
They keep cropping up on soundtracks for my wife's Amwrican sexy-teen-vampire shows though which is a black mark 🙄
Anyway, no point to this post really, just curious what the general opinion is.
Like what I've heard of them but never been a band ive really ever looked out for if that makes sense?
Im a big fan, seen them a few times. First time was in 2004 at Manchester university and they were supported by.... brian jonestown massacre. And they became my new favourite band
But was a huge fan of BRMC back then, lost touch after 'Baby 81' although Ive got 'beat the devils tattoo' album.
Their first couple of albums were a bit patchy, and they would have the odd dirge. But songs like 'rise and fall' were pretty goth I thought (which is a good thing) and was very much their own sound. Songs like 'Stop' and 'red eyes and tears' just great.
I always thought their most famous song 'spread your love' reminded me a bit of the Yardbirds for some reason.
Their most complete album, a view shared by many, is 'Howl' which kind of reinvented them. Im glad they're still doing their thing, Leah Shapiro looks like a great drummer so I really should get back into them.
One of the best bands of the early noughties, although I appreciate they were a bit too surly and derivative for some. And perhaps you could argue are a more rocky, but poor man's, Brian Jonestown Massacre.
that gig I went to in 2004 at Manchester university I remember having the most amazing guitar sound I've ever heard. Peter Turner's ES335 sounded massive, MASSIVE. I've never heard anything as good ever since and I still remember it now. It was the biggest, baddest sound I've ever heard. He must have some pretty sweet distortion pedals
Yeah, I remember the live gig we saw just had the biggest light rig I'd ever seen, felt like being a rabbit in the headlights of a massive juggernaut.
If you liked Howl check out the tracks on Youtube from "The Howl EP". Wishing Well and Mercy in particular.
I just found out they shared band members with BJM, another of my favourite bands.
Agree they are guilty of some dirgy stuff though...
Saw them back on an NME tour, jeez, musta been 20 years ago 😂
Decent rock n roll band, not much more really. Can’t say they’re overrated cos nobody really rates em anymore 😉

...yeah Peter Hayes is in 'Dig!' (very briefly). My mistake, its Peter Hayes and Robert Turner (now Levon Been)
BJM have been a hub for so many great bands over the years: BRMC, Warlocks, Black Angels, Beth Jeans Houghton, off the top of my head.
I follow Anton Newcombe on Twitter and he lives in Berlin now with his wife and son. For a while it looked like he'd be dying early through hard living, smack addiction.
Now he just follows British politics and takes the P... and records new BJM albums. He's a proper anglophile

Haha, yeah, I realised I was posing the wrong question really 😎
Fingerbang +1.

Aware of them, but they’re not a band that’s ever really made me want to dig into their catalogue.
I’m sure they have an active fanbase, I’m just not in it.

I didn’t know that, I do really like Black Angels. Couldn’t explain why. BJM once released their back catalogue on free download. There was so much of it, I didn’t know where to start, so ended up listening to none of it.
BJM - I came for the song "Anemone" but I stayed for all 25 tracks from the album "Take it from the man".
There's also a smattering of great tracks on "Bravery Repetition and Noise" and "Thank God for Mental Illness".
Then there's about 5 other albums I've never got round to listening to! 😎
BRMC - Used to be a big fan back in 6th form + start of Uni. First couple of albums were great but the 3rd one (I think) all went a bit country and I've not listened to any of their new stuff after that. But then I've not really invested in any new music since about 2006 and am happy listening to stuff I know and like.
BJM - supported BRMC at Leeds City Hall in 2003 (maybe?) - they were awful and lead singer was just whining all the time about "why does nobody like us?" All seemed very pathetic and gained no interest from me.

Haha! Yeah you should watch 'Dig!'. BJM lead singer (Anton Newcombe) definitely had issues.

I know other people who were put off by Howl (the acoustic/country 3rd Album) but they return to their usual style for Baby 81 and Beat the Devil's Tattoo (not sure about the other albums, I think one went a wee bit electro or something??)
