When is it actually Black Friday, as constant adverts at the moment saying, beat Black Friday, Black Friday starts now etc.

From what I can remember it was all a bit rubbish last year, did anyone actually get genuine good deals?

Day after Thanksgiving, which is the last Thursday in November. So called because most Americans take the Friday off, so shops did really good deals to entice customers in. Americans did what Americans do in such situations, fights ensued, people crushed/killed. Hence the ‘Black’

It's after shops have finished putting the prices up on things.

A lot of retailers have realised that having it on one day puts a massive strain on all of their infrastructure (Website, warehousing, couriers etc) as well as skewing their sales massively. It makes more sense to spread it out a bit to reduce these issues, but the 'name' has remained.

Some retailers buy in lines of stock especially to sell at a black friday discount while others just reduce the price on some of their existing stock lines and some do a mixture, or nothing.

Also, there are rules in place with regard to pricing and the advertisement of said prices, but I believe nothing is done about it unless people actually report it to the CSA (Consumer Services Association) and I think they can warn and fine companies if caught \ a serious enough offence, but at the same time the rules can be quite vague.

It is, or used to be, the American equivalent of our Boxing Day sales. As above, it's now got a bit of middle aged spread 😆

An unwanted import from the US.
A triumph of marketing over common sense.

Black Friday in the UK has quickly got from being introduced on a single day to spreading through most of November.

In common with all the other "days" like "Mother's Day", "Valetine's Day", etc.

I've saved 100% on the cost of whatever by not buying it 😉

Agreed - I saw some cat food on 'Buy one, get two free' so bought three hundred tins and saved £182.74.

Now I just need to buy a cat.

You don't buy a cat - one walks into your life and it can't get rid of you 😉

Occasionally you can make it work in your favour and get a proper bargain. I was looking for new Mountain Bike this time last year. Black Friday saw Wheelbase have some vboucher deal where you buy £100 of vouchers and get £35 extra free. I figured i'd try my luck and asked if i could buy £3100 worth of vouchers....the answer was 'Ummmmm, let me check with the boss' then 'Yes'. So i handed over £3100 and walked out with a £4200 bike that had arrived in stock only the day before...the same one i was planning on buying after Christmas anyway. Strangely i havent seen any plans for them to repeat the deal this year....
