How does Black Friday now seem to last all of November?!

Oh and if anyone sees a decent offer on a small Chromebook (like really dinky, very lightweight), please let me know!

I'm after a Google Pixel 6a (I think...)

I may also splash out on a new TV seeing as the (sole) existing TV is about 12 yrs old and "only" 37" & 720p resolution. Keep in eye out for a new thread as I know sod all about TVs these days 😃

Bought a new phone last weekend on a pre-Black Friday deal, a Pixel 6 with case and screen protector kit for £350. Thought it was a Renewed/Recon one at first but a closer look at the listing showed it to be a new one, turned up in a sealed box so very happy. The deal has now gone and is back up to the £450 mar like a lot of other places. Also picked up a few Mini bits from the MiniSport sale that should arrive this week, some of which will sit on a shelf for a decade!

It's £299 from tomorrow on google store apparently.

Because there's an impending recession and retailers have to shift goods asap to reluctant consumers to pay their energy bills.

^id be buying a Samsung S95b at that kind of money personally, i wish id waited a bit longer before buying the awful LG thing i ended up with 12 months ago.

I annoyingly missed out on a £125 exposure race just before bf, now i cant bring myself to pay the ‘cheap’ £175 the black friday deals currently want 😂

Bought some winter mtb boots though.. toasty feet for me!

Had ordered one of the frame Samsung but had to send it back as slim mount meant it didn’t fit over the power and data input I had put high up the wall to hide any wires!

Shame as it did look lovely.

Innit.

I've already spunked my wad on heavily discounted bike stuff from CRC, Superstar, Sport Pursuit and others. All 50% off or more.

I think they're all trying to get in early in anticipation of people having less to spend, what with the cost of living crisis and all.

How can we have black Friday, when it's not even a bank holiday?

The original reason for the sales is it's the day after thanksgiving which is usually a holiday as well, so people did their Christmas shopping.

Seeing as we don't have the day off to go shopping, it's just a load of shops trying to extract as much money from your wallet as soon as possible before you have chance to spend it on Christmas shopping somewhere else.

Oh it's definitely an American import but I think it also tied in with the rough time in the year that shops reached break-even point and could therefore afford to discount stuff as well as create space for next year's [s]tat[/s] essential consumer products.

I still remember - when BF first became A Thing - of fights in supermarkets as everyone rushed in to grab TVs. The Asda near where I worked at the time had to close its doors for a few hours while the police sorted it all out!

Traditionally BF was supposed to be an in-store thing with Cyber Monday an online one but now it's just a mad consumer frenzy for most of November...

I'd assume the vast majority of "Black Friday" shopping is done with a mouse, possibly during work hours.

Black Friday is just a (quite effective) marketing label, even if we know that its coming and that retailers have stocked up especially for it.

That 161 XT looks like the pick of the crop to me.

Personally I'd have the extra travel if I were getting a bike that chonky.

I bought a Commencal Meta Hardtail from CRC. Started building, but needs a headset, so have ordered one from Superstar with a BF code 🙂

Just now tried to order one of the bargain Pixel phones, but kept getting errors and timeouts on the Google store so gave up. I'm sure my Pixel 3a will last another year anyway.

Keeping my eyes open for an air fryer.

A set of Santoku knives to replace my Global ones which keep breaking

As in, knives from santokuknives.co.uk? Bought a set earlier this year, our first proper decent knife set - they are amazing (to us, who know no different!) but be aware they took aaaaaaages to arrive and their customer service didn't reply to a single query. So don't plan dinner parties to showcase them until they turn up. 🙂

They are lovely knives, though. 🙂

Surely it's a one-off kinda thing? You can get a 7 day hire on ebay for around £30 delivered.

My own Black Friday purchases - got a nice thermal jersey and a quilted hoodie from Royal Racing for half price. Should be useful in the coming months.

I almost always swap my existing parts onto a frame, but Privateer bikes do spec their bikes very smartly.

I'd take the benefit of new suspension (with new warranties) and brand new transmission/brakes, and flog my existing bits.

And it'd be great not to have to build the bloody bike for once.

However, if said person were more into multiple bikes multiple times per year, then maybe buying would be a better plan 😀

Google Store Black Friday prices don't work for another 13-ish hours, so suspect the prices won't work yet. I'm kind of hoping the Google Hub drops in price a bit more...would like one in the shed for when I'm turbo'ing, but I'm not needing to spend the £90 on it. I'm tight though...suspect plenty folk will find that a bargain price, but as it is more an 'extra' thing, the price is still too high for me.

I did manage to get a new bike helmet at a very good price, so no complaints really.

How in the holy hell do you keep breaking knives?
Are you using them as hammers/spanners/tyre levers/anvils or what?

@esselgruntfuttock - It's a known issue with a particular design of Global Knife

See my last post and link on this thread -

Link to previous thread...

I CADed and then used FEA to analyse the stress on the blade and it really is a bad design. The handle is at its thinnest and narrowest section at the point where maximum leverage and bending can be applied. If it's loaded in the cutting direction and there's a significant sidewise force, say the item being cut moves, it can cause the blade to fracture. The material properties need to be particularly brittle for it to do this, but the model doesn't lie. I presented all this to Global and they have agreed to warranty them (despite not having a receipt and them being 11 years old) and thus send replacements...but, I'll only be using them for softer applications, not root veg, which has killed the Chefs Knife and an apple which =killed the pairing knife.

I thought you (like me) had come to the conclusion they were broadly rubbish and just repeatedly told you to undo the last change it told you to make?

Same here. We were planning on replacing our failing CRT (finally) this winter... but will have to wait another year now I think.

I know someone who's been through this (but without your skills to explain their case) and also received a replacement. My two Globals are still going though... bought for me as presents by my parents in the 1990s... and that includes tackling many swedes over the decades. As with everything... some failures can make people worry that all will fail... reminds me of mountain bike frames in that respect.

Not at all, i just felt i could get it close enough on my own now. But as time and racing progreses i'd like better than 'close enough' for the boy. He's got his coil stuff setup nicely, but the air would be nice to get right too and the data-logging is a little expensive at times... Sure it means he gets it spot on... but with all the swapping and changing, it can get a bit repetitive, so wouldn't mind trying the Shockwiz again to get things pretty close.

When I was a lowly pot-boy at a few nice restaurants in the mid/late 90s Global was *the* brand all the cool chefs had in their knife rolls. And they definitely used the **** out of them without them snapping.

I wonder if Global changed the design or materials subsequently?

^^yup this^^

Also, drop anything on it like a pan and the floor's likely to come off worst. Some of the dings in our old floor were hilarious. It'll even ripple up around an impact site as if it were a fluid. Glad I didn't directly pay for it ("thrown in" with new build the deal).

I'll have a word this end - think one of my riding buddies may have one which goes unused if he didn't already get rid because it simply says "add x tokens" "reduce y psi" "remove x tokens" "add y psi" and repeat.

After a couple of warranties the conclusion was that it's a limitation of the device not a fault.

Oh, some carbon road wheels would be nice too.

I keep looking on Chain Reaction at their Prime wheels (which I've had before, they were very good) and there are some more discounts coming but it seems a bit piecemeal. They do have a great deal on a tubeless bundle - £500 for 2 tyres, valves, sealant and the wheels instead of about £800 for just the wheels. They're deeper than I'd like though... I'm fussy like that.

Sigma Sports had some good deals on their Vel wheels - one set went down to about £700 before rapidly going back to £899 so I suspect a pricing error somewhere in there!

299 at John Lewis, with an offer that gets you an 'additional' £100 cashback when trading in an old handset (if they would have given you £20 for your old one, you now get £120), effectively making the phone 299-100-trade in! In the example that would make it £180!
