So our Plusnet contract is coming to an end and they have given me lots of messages etc, so full marks for that.
Currently we pay £28.57 (was originally £24.99 but got bumped up by annual inflation rises etc).
If we do nothing, it jumps to £47.54, but we can just sign up again at £24.99 for 18 months.
I'd have probably ignored it at £28.57 and just carried on paying it, but with such a default jump I'm obviously going to shop around now.
Does seem a bit of an own goal - unless it's meant to just convince me to sign up again for 18 months...
I've just been through this with BT.
Was on £36 per month (including Complete Wifi)
Was going up to £42
New customer price was £26
On the phone they offered £28.
They then wanted an extra £12 per month for Complete Wi-fi but I already have the disks. Non return fee for the disks is £30 so I just cancel it and keep them, would rather pay £30 non return fee than an extra £288 over the contract!
We then moved on to look at our family plan mobile. I didn't even need to ask, they just doubled the data and nearly halved the price for 5 sims on family plan.
So for the sake of one phone call I've now got faster broadband, double data on 5 sims and am nearly £30 a month better off.
We signed up to NowTV bb plus unlimited <60min calls deal last year, end of contract came around and we were told if we do nothing the deal continues on a rolling monthly contract... Ok then, twist my arm.
I’ve had the same Footflaps. Gonna call em today and validate some of the small print.
I expect the pricing model is merely there to tax the lazy.
The service itself works well. I use a non-ISP router so no plans to change.
Same thing happened to us.
Just call them and sign up for another 18 months at the lower rate

I did this recently and they made a massive hash of the renewal. Had to chase repeatedly over four months to get them to process it, and somehow I have also lost access to BT Sport which they won't now reinstate, saying it was somehow my fault! Not sure how that works.
They also sent me a router despite me saying I don't want or need one, and then tried to bill me for it too.
Until recently I've always found Plusnet to be fine - not sure what's happened in the meantime (high staff turnover perhaps?) but their service has definitely gone downhill since.
We had the same loony renewal price via messages, but when I contacted them, they renewed it for the same price or thereabouts. Can't remember the exact details, but very similar to what you've outlined.
Lots of competition now, if there is a fair chance you'll move to a competitor, and they can avoid that whilst guaranteeing your custom for another 18 months it probably makes business sense to them. And they don't need to send you the router/fund new connection charges as they would for a genuine new customer.
The other consideration is if they are converting you to a digital voice/VOIP service which may save them wholesale costs. (Phone plugs into router instead of plugging into the phone socket)
Yeah, I just had the same with PlusNet. I just signed back up as have been pleased with them for the 10 yrs I've been with them. Can count outages on one hand, and when I had a speed drop a couple of weeks ago due to wiring issue in the street, they had an Openreach dude there within about 3 hrs (on a Saturday).
My only issue with signing up for another 18 months is that I will want to get FTTP as soon as it's available, but there's no sign of that coming (exchange is noted as 'not a priority' on BT checker). Also it's slightly unclear if my £10/month BTsports carries on or not.
I’ve been with Plusnet for donkeys years in Cambridge and just asked for new customer rate for renewal which they agreed to. Don’t have any problem with Plusnet, they have been superb over the years, very responsive and easy to contact. They also supplied the new version of router (BT clone) which is a big improvement.
