Birmingham's meant to be ace for Indian/****stani/Bangladeshi food, right?
Down for work this week and in the mood for a curry. Weekend calories to replace. Staying city centre, where's particularly good in the nearby, esp. for a vegetarian?
Yours hungrily,
cheers!
If you want to be right in middle then Pushkar on broad street was lovely the last time I went, not cheap but very nice.
I have a veggie mate who's a massive curry aficionado and works in Brum city centre, I've asked for his guidance as well, if anyone knows a good secret spot it'll be him.
How much do you want to spend???
Opheem is the finest Indian food you'll ever eat, but it'll cost you.
Asha's is a fair step down in price, but still not cheap. Tom Cruise loves it there apparently...
If you're looking for a proper curry you need to head out of the city centre to Sparkbrook.
Shababs on Ladypool Road is one of the original Balti houses and is truly brilliant.
Adils on Stoney Lane is also an old skool Balti House and very good.
Both the above look a bit rough round the edges and are BYO booze, but are worth a quick taxi ride.
Or for something that's not curry in the traditional sense:
Indian Brewery on Livery Street is Indian street food and an inhouse brewery
Hen and Chickens (Constitution Hill) or Keg and Grill (Upper Gough Street) are Indian desi pubs which specialise in mixed grills, both awesome, but perhaps not for a vege.
City Centre will have fine tourist curry I'm sure but a short taxi/ bus ride to the suburbs will yield far better results.
Look in Smethwick, Handsworth, Balsall Heath and any of the other Asian communities.

The best kind
Adils (the original and finest) is closed now, sadly. But for the more refined tastes, Al Faisal's next door is excellent. If it's a more authentic ****stani experience you want, we always enjoy Sheereen Kadah on Moseley Road just a couple of miles from New Street Station.
Got a response from my curry-loving veggie mate and the hot tip is Lasan on James street in the Jewellery quarter.
Again, we are talking strictly 'best' rather than 'best value' but it's apparently pretty spectacularly good and the area is fairly unstabby, which may or may not be a factor in your calculations.
For better value I'd second a pilgrimage to the Balti Triangle but the pandemic seems to have killed off my old faves to I'll ceed to the recommendations above for the specifics.
I was about to recommend Adils, was excellent last time we went and on a STW recommendation thread, shame that it’s closed.
I wish I could remember the name of the place but I can't. However it did the most spectacular nargis kebabs (think 'Scotch egg with indian spice'). So my answer is 'somewhere that does nargis kebabs because they are bloody ace'.
Opheem / Lasan in the city centre for fancy curry, if going for a balti with mates I tend to go to Diwan on the Moseley Rd, it's only 3 - 4 miles from the city centre - they have a good range of veggie options.
Grameen Khana In the Balti Triangle is also pretty good though I've not been there since pre-pandemic
Jyoti's is also an other option - its 100% veggie place but it's a bit further out of town, they have the bonus of having a sweet centre there as well.
Hen and chickens(cask and curry) on constitution hill
Is fantastic.
I've been to Jyoti's. It was Ok, not that memorable and about 4 miles out of town.

Only been once but the Indian Brewery on Livery Street was really nice...will be going back at some point!
I go to a few. Lasans amongst them. If you don’t want to go wrong - follow the Bangladeshi’s, ****stani’s and Indians…
Or Robert Plant - who knows where to find great traditional food!

Ah misty eyed nostalgia - I remember when that first opened - 100 yards from the front door my student house - 30 years ago. Because its was a bit far away from the clusters of balti houses on Ladypool Road or up in Moseley village it had to compete on price - so main dishes were £1.99 instead of £3 🙂
Later when I lived in an old shop on Ladypool Road - it wasnt converted - we rented the flat above and the shop got thrown in for free so just had the shop as our living / dining room - if we didnt lock the front door in the evening people would come in and sit at our dining table
