Tried all sorts of fat balls over the years, they get pecked at in a half-hearted fashion, then left to go mouldy.
Apart from the sunflower hearts, which the goldies love, (yet still manage to chuck half of each seed on the floor! Ungreatful little wretches), the most success I’ve had is with suet pellets mixed with mealworms.
Which have also proved popular with the hedgehogs, so a win all round, really.
Although, I have tried some suet logs from Wilco’s, which slide into a plastic holder, which got very little attention to start with, but first the starlings then the blackbirds started to peck at them, now the blackbird goes through them at a phenomenal rate.
What with the food for the birds, and now suet pellets, mealworms and kitty kibbles for the hedgehogs, it’s costing me a bloody fortune!

I put some suet out and had a woodpecker going crazy for it. The blue tits and squirrels loved it too. This was a while ago.

My balls simply attract vermin and leave unsightly splatter marks on the patio.

Suet mealworm balls go down the treat here. Damn starlings are relentless. You would have to buy in bulk to keep up with them. Mixed seed mixture on the table and feeder also which has mealworms , sunflower seeds, suet pieces and the usual maize . The maize gathers in a heap below the feeders and is only ate when everything else is expired along with sunflower seeds. Have a regular group of starlings x6 , sparrows x10+ , robin x2, bluetit x 1 or 2, wagtail x 1 or 2 chaffinch x 1 or 2. When I put larger stuff on the shed roof we get a few jackdaws , and crows. Blackbird and wren and noticeably absent.

Starlings go mad for mealworms. If I put them put them out, a starling scout will eat a few and then go and get the rest of his mob and they empty the feeder in minutes. Even had one stuck in the feeder 1 day.

I bought some rough looking peanuts in a *thing* from Aldi for £2 - the small brown chirpy birds in my back garden ****ing love 'em.

Yeah fat balls are the broccoli/brussel sprouts of my small bird buffet.
