a few days ago - on a [s]night[/s] evening ride.
conditions were peachy, i stopped to take it all in.
and heard a bird call, that sounded really weird.
sort of like a bittern saying 'kik-ooop'
(the k's and the p's were enunciated, but the 'oop' part had a bitterny boom to it)
location: wooded valley, next to sheffield.
pteradactyl?
predator?
(not a bird?)
?
Pheasant?
With the weather being so hot,i suspect it could be a baby... Phoenix.
Harpy eagle.... I'd be worried. ...
john_drummer - MemberPheasant?
not a pheasant, i know that one (eaten my fair share too).
pheasants go: krrrrk-krrrrk!

Thanks for the link to that call ID app, it's often difficult to ID a bird from its call if you can't see the damned bird! You have to have some starting point.
It's the call of the Rough Faced Shag - Phalacrocorax carunculatus
Curlew?
