Having always just been a bit hit and miss with my birding and hitting my local patch and doing google searches if I travel anywhere - ie Wirral to the inlaws, when I just view dee esturary birds latest sightings, I'm beginning to think there must be a cheap subscription service? Looked a these years ago and it was spendy.
Anyone use one? Any recommendations? I'm no twitcher, and won't be gunning round the country hoping not to dip on the latest rarity, but if there was something cheap I could use for north west england and occasional nationwide travel it would be awesome. Especially to see some species I haven't experienced before....
Any suggestions, birders of STW?
There are a couple of options I know of:
Birdguides - I think £40 per year for either website access or you can download an app which you can customise to show local rarities. The app is really good, and easy to use.
Birdtrack - BTO website and app. This is free, but you need to register first on the Birdtrack website. The app has just been updated, and currently isn't as useful to show what is about locally, but I believe a further update should add back in that function. The website has a map showing all recent sightings, and you can search by species, etc. There's heaps of info on it, you just need to take some time to get used to it. Also a good way to record what you've seen.
I know a few local areas have things like yahoo groups which send out emails when something rare:unusual is seen. Might be worth checking if there's something similar for your area.
Sorry, thought this was about a new dating app. 😉
Sorry, thought this was a Feminist Tracking System.
We are members of our local RSPB group on facebook (High Peak). They also have monthly trips out, with the most amazing guides with so much knowledge
The other members are great at putting out info on the latest sightings and where to spot them.
Cheers All. May give the £40 per year a go, after I've looked at the BTO stuff.
High Peak RSPB - takes me back 30 years to my YOC days with Mr Monks!!
You could also try Ebird. Its free. You can submit your sightings there. They now have a mobile app, which is handy for recording sighting when out and about. You can browse other peoples logs, or you can search for particular species or locations etc.
