Can anyone recommend any ‘proper’ but not hugely expensive binoculars for a 9yr old? She’s only got rubbish kiddy plastic ones and it would be nice to get some more robust (grown up) ones for smaller hands. I know nothing about this so would love some advice.

How about these?
Never tried them though.
I had some Opticron Vega for a few years until I totally wrecked them. Really good for the money.

In general stick to 25 or 32mm optics to allow for small hands, though the smaller front end will mean a small compromise in the brightness of the image compared to a 42mm pair.

Usual "recommend what you have" - Barr & Stroud Sahara 8*32. We carry a pair when out riding as they're not overly heavy and very good quality for the price (usually around £70 ish, we paid £50 odd at Hyde Camera Centre near where I work)

I got a set of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Eyeskey-Binoculars-Waterproof-Professional-Watching/dp/B01AFURB3S at the start of lock down (well, the 8 x 42 ones) as they're easier to carry than my larger 10 x 50s

they are - to me at least - surprisingly good for the price (which fluctuates - a lot - by flash deals etc)

Also do a 8 x 32 for smaller hands

Hawke Nature Trek 8x32

I have the 8x42 and they're excellent for the money.
The 32s would be better for a younger person, bit lighter, better fit in a kid's packpack and more likely to actually be used.

Of course, there's hundreds of options around the £100 mark, but I really like the Hawke optics...

Kowa 6x30

They're really very good, happy to use them myself. Very well regarded. I'm happy to spend on optics (have some Leicas) but these are a nice balance between good enough quality, robust for the kids, and not so expensive you'll spend the whole time worrying about them.

Designed for use by kids, the IPD can be set very small. Mine have had them for a couple of years so must have been around 5/6 when I first got them

Dunno if this will work as an image, but these were £5 from a charity shop and are excellent for everything
