According to US media Bin Laden is dead and Obama is due to make a speech shortly. Its on the BBC site.
Hooray!
We won!
Etc
I do think that the audacity and daring of the 9-11 operation made such fools of the US that they felt the need to start a war or two and invade some sandy country whilst shouting.
Does that mean I can go home now...?
Like they've reportedly been doing outside the White House since the announcement - "USA, USA"...I do think that the audacity and daring of the 9-11 operation made such fools of the US that they felt the need to start a war or two and invade some sandy country whilst shouting.
Will it make any difference?
Apart from to OBL himself.
Quite frankly I am deeply sceptical.
NZCol - MemberQuite frankly I am deeply sceptical.
Quite. The way the BBC are reporting it is that a small group of Americans "found him and killed him". Why wouldn't they have captured him and paraded him around?
My scepticism is based on the fact that they have already killed have they not, or reported so once and then retracted it. Absolute bo-lax. When's the next US election ? Anything happening there just now ?
If it's true, will there be a spate of revenge attacks by terrorists?
Was his head not worth millions of dollars? (or millions of 60p's)Thus making it worth your while to produce said noggin for display.
So the crooked one (Obama)got the lion (Osama) where the shrub (Bush) failed. Perhaps Sarkozy was right to spell the US president's name "Barak".
What was the alternative - not hunt him down?
Glad they have finally got him. Bit of an anti-climax as he would undoubtedly be dead within a year or two from his various ailments but good that he has finally paid.
TT, yes you're right to say he needed capturing.
It was the "killing" bit - with glorification - that made me feel slightly uncomfortable.
Whatever he may or may not have done everybody should have a fair trial.
Now that will open another can of worms....... Guantanamo....
America now needs a new bogeyman to blame for their self-generated ills. Who do you think can replace Osama in the hearts and minds of Americans?

Maybe they will take some direction from the hypocrisy the UK and France spout.
They have confirmed his death, and have the body - good news, but the fight will go on
No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body.
Interesting wording - could be read that OBL did not take part in the firefight and/or he was not killed as part of the firefight but was executed afterwards.

I imagine he doesn't have the energy to lift a gun let alone get involved in a fire fight. More than likely they won't have taken any risk in letting him escape again so excessive force would have been used in order to kill all within that compound.
Much more detailed info with The Guardian on the attack and where he was found.

POIDH!
Excellent. Let's find more of the bastards and shoot them dead, too.
Well done USA troops.
Usual whining from STW's conspiracy theorists and fanatic supporters like the stupid "Edukator (sic)".
Well given how ill he was in 2001 and how he died in 2001, this seems pretty miraculous to me. We should be celebrating his resurrection. 🙂

This is a man who was clearly not well. I mean, as you see from these pictures here, he's really, by December he's looking pretty terrible. But by December, of course, that tape that was aired then, he's barely moving the left side of his body. So he's clearly got diabetes. He has low blood pressure. He's got a wound in his foot. He's apparently got dialysis ... for kidney problems.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,41576,00.html
Bin Laden, according to the source, was suffering from a serious lung complication and succumbed to the disease in mid-December, in the vicinity of the Tora Bora mountains. The source claimed that bin Laden was laid to rest honorably in his last abode and his grave was made as per his Wahabi belief.
If it's true - I'm happy. Loads of experts said it would never be announced so there's a bit of uncertainty left.
FAIW He should've been hung and quartered for the Twin Towers, a bullet in the head was merciful.
"African-American D.C. man confesses to killing elderly disabled man." - FOX News
Kate Middleton has only been in the job 2 days and the world is a happy place already
Well done USA troops.
Hear hear. Their professionalism and bravery is unmatched. A mere 10 years, a handful of Afghan deaths, and an insignificant few £billions/trillions is all that it took. Let that be a lesson to anyone who thinks they can mess with the US.
It was the "killing" bit
If a bloke who didn't want to be captured was holed up with several armed blokes with no fear of death and no desire to be captured, capturing them would be damn near impossible.
Interesting wording
Not really. After a firefight they then went forward to confirm, search for intelligence and evidence then ensure they had the real evidence of his death. Nothing of mystery there.
Well of course ernie, if YOU'D have been on the case, looking for one man on the face of the planet hiding away in an unknown location, the scumbag would have been killed years ago.
Of course that's what it took. Why wouldn't it?
Good to have someone around with the resources to do it, say I.
Seriously worrying, Bin Laden was a weakening figurehead, now he's a martyr. I expect revenge attacks, rioting and even more tightened airport security.
buried at sea - nothing suspicious there then
Sky just reported that the corpse was disposed of at sea, preventing some sort of "shrine" being set up at the sight of what was left of the piece of crap.
Clever.
Getting rid of the body so that no shrine can be created is pretty sensible.
Of course the tin foil hat brigade love that sort of thing too.
Seen the picture, he's been dying his beard/hair. We should have had him years ago when our special forces found him but had to wait for the authority to kill him from the US
looking for one man on the face of the planet hiding away in an unknown location
Absolutely, I couldn't agree more. There's about 6 billion people in the world, it must be a nightmare looking for just one person. Specially when the crafty ****er is hiding in an "unknown location"......he could have been anywhere, Melbourne, Buenos Aires, Helsinki. I bet finding him just over the Afghan border in ****stan came as a surprise to them.
Dumped in the sea - "That's one way of how you dispose of your garbage".
Quote of the day so far.
Feels like a level complete on Call of duty!! then the big sensationism that the US and the news do, he's dead so on and so forth!!
I might be missing the point, but yes he masterminded so many terror attacks, well so we are lead to believe from american intelligence, not sure if intelligence is the right word.
Buried at sea? why not just jetison it into space and be done with it.
Who knows what backlash this will be, terror alerts will go up and airport security will be clamped down again.
He probably chose not to go down the Saddam Hussein route and not surrender rather than go through a kangaroo court and have his execution put on the internet for the world to watch.
Buried at sea? Call me cynical, but I just dont think that is the style of the US...
Buried at sea?
Apparently, we have to be extra vigilant now for the coming months.
Hmmm...
Who's the new al qaeda #1?
This will go on forever, but like a previous poster said, they couldn't just not hunt him down.
Anyway, I expect things to get worse now with a few attacks here 'n there.
i am not sure what difference it will make in the grand scheme of things
Burial at sea without the body being seen [if true] will cause suspicion and seems a rather odd decision as they know what will be inferred from this decision
Whoppit I never had you down as a Gung Ho Hawk most of those who feel like you in tthe USA are also thanking God HTH
Have you seen the scenes outside the white house? They are no better than the flag burners they call the enemy.
i am not sure what difference it will make in the grand scheme of things
Agreed, but it all helps.
Have you seen the scenes outside the white house? They are no better than the flag burners they call the enemy.
Yes, its completly the same! 🙄
If you had any family or friends who had suffered during the 11th September or 7th July attacks you would understand their pain.
Ferocious in battle, magnanimous in victory.
That is right American foreign policy [ you do know he worked and was trained by the CIA]has never led to the deaths of anyone and certainlty not innocent civilians and has in no way contributed to the strength of negative feeling towards than benign altrustic bringer of peace the world over
FFS even the Guardian describe Bin Ladden as
the criminal mastermind behind
Makes him sound like a Bond Villan
I hear Donald Trump's been on TV demanding to see his death certificate 😆
I did hear him referred to as an evil genius this morning. When will Osama's Evil Petting Zoo open?
Whoppit I never had you down as a Gung Ho Hawk most of those who feel like you in tthe USA are also thanking God HTH
On this occasion it gets my full approval.
Next - al-Zawahiri and then Mullah Omar and then any more of the scumbags that can be found.
US policy has been subject to massive errors of perception on all sorts of levels. This is largely due to their own misunderstanding of the limits of their power and and a cultural ignorance of how other countries and cultures work.
Bush's tendency (with encouragement from the idiot Blair) to ignore the advice of UK "Arabists" led to all sorts of short-sighted errors that have compounded the difficulties.
However, one gets the sense that Obama's leadership, which seems to have a steadier hand on the tiller so to speak, is beginning to reap rewards.
As far as the general thrust of US and UK policy is concerned - oppose and fight Islamic terrorism on all possible levels - I'm completely on side.
Oh, and people can thank whatever version of the Big Pink Unicorn that they like. Makes no difference to my own satisfaction with the outcome.
even the Guardian describe Bin Ladden asthe criminal mastermind behind
To be fair, hatching a plan which involved a handful of blokes armed only with stanley knives, to highjack planes so that they could be flown into buildings, requires the mind of a genius. What if they had bought those stanley knives without the retractable blades ? .....one of the terrorists might have accidentally cut themselves whilst boarding the plane and the whole operation would have been jeopardised. No, definitely the work of an evil genius mind.
Well that's the price of fuel going up again then!
I feel sorry for the grave diggers
I imagine there are probably families of people who died in 9/11 are feeling a measure of closure.
If only killing one man would solve the issues.
If only killing one man would solve the issues
God?
Well done US. He was not a nice man.
Now, do I still have to go to Afghanistan this summer?
If only killing one man would solve the issues
God?
Surely that involves killing three men (father, son, holy [s]goat[/s]ghost) 😆
Well done US. He was not a nice man
Neither is TJ but I don't want him killed 😉
Seriously though - it's not going to make any difference. Whoever thinks all this mess is down to one person is being very silly.
Neither is TJ but I don't want him killed
Speak for yourself.
Reuters reporting that they traced him through his sony playstation account details!
I hear he was just about to complete level 76 on "Kill the infidels III" also.
LOL at crispo.
"Protecting the earth from the scum of the universe". 😆
Neither is TJ
I think that's unfair. I have it on good authority that he's a nice bloke.
Speak for yourself.
Woppit, on the other hand....
I thought they'd found him via his iPhone tracking his every move??
I think that's unfair
It was, and I apologise unreservedly. It was a cheap shot and I was trying to get back at him for making me feel bad earlier in the week.
I'm glad he was buried at sea.
Only cod can judge him now.
Will we see the same jubilant scenes when Bush and Blair pop their clogs?
I do hope so.
Although there is one scumbayg whose death is far more imminent, I'd imagine, and I for one shall definitely be celebrating...
(Polishes dancing shoes)
Best not mention her name though cos some people get a bit tetchy over it.
Seen the picture, he's been dying his beard/hair
Well then, I can certainly see why they're describing him as an "evil genius". No wonder it took so long to find him with that sort of cunning in play.
a nice gesture would be to split the $25 million dollar bounty between the unit that did the job.
Incidentally they could have found him years ago, just track who was buying all the C90 cassettes and VHS blank videos in ****stan, now that everyones moves onto Blu Ray and MP3
Every day that disgusting lunatic drew breath was an effrontery to the ideals of democracy and civilisation.
Sadly until religious fanaticism of all persuasions is removed from this planet, we will continue to see needless death for the sake of a human fantasy that indulges in the belief and worship of supernatural entities.
this stinks - so many questions
why oh why would they not parade his head on a spike after pursuing him for 10 years?
why did it take so long to find someone living in a house in a city?
how can USA swoop into a foreign country and publicly assassinate someone?
where is the body? Where are the WMDs?
2441 members of coalition military forces dead in Afghanistan alone - was it worth it?
Why did OBL attack the US in the first place?
I really hope the USA put the same amount of effort into changing their foreign policy and the way they conduct themselves on a global scale as they did into reacting to a terrorist attack.

Best not mention her name though cos some people get a bit tetchy over it.
Too late, Mo Mowlam has already snuffed it.
I have a feeling he's been dead for a few days.
Best not mention her name though....
Unfortunately she was too unwell to make the wedding at the weekend.
well i've heard that osama bin laden is barack obama - and here is a video that proves it.....
Now there's a real reason for an extra bank holiday and a street party.
USA USA USA USA USA......
got to loves the yanks 🙂

Did a good job of the cover up then, getting local residents to Twitter about helicopters overhead last night

That burial at sea option is looking better all the time 😉
why oh why would they not parade his head on a spike after pursuing him for 10 years?
er, cos that would be slightly inflamatory, offensive and insensitive? (and sick)
why did it take so long to find someone living in a house in a city?
i imagine a lot of the time he wasn't living there? perhaps in the caves he used? plus i imagine intelligence gathering takes a long time - you'd not want to screw it up, would you?
how can USA swoop into a foreign country and publicly assassinate someone?
he died in a firefight, not an assassination - asassinations are internationally illegal for such people. the mision was to capture him, not asassinate - however i imagine (as someone else pointed out), that capturing someone who was probably being guarded by armed men, none of whom are going to be scared of death, isn't going to be too easy.
where is the body?
in the sea. for a range of reasons that have already been covered on here and in the media.
Why did OBL attack the US in the first place?
for a whole range of reasons - some delusional, some 'religious', probably some to do with economic reasons etc.
of course, i'm sure the tinfoil hat wearers will find some other answers.
