Will they be the bike equivalent of...

😉

Fully supportive of getting more people on bikes, but not sure about the approach of "patients able to access bikes through their local surgery."

Be interesting to see how well it works, I would think that reticence to ride on a busy road will be a blocker in most cities esp if you haven't ridden a bike for years....

^ It's the equivalent of giving you a swimming costume but no pool. You'll just have to venture down to the nearest pond if you feel the need.

I think there's a positive message in there, but providing people with bikes doesn't necessarily enable them to cycle.

Tory soundbite.
No detail.
Any discussion with GPs about it? What level of funding? What duration? Net new money?
Won't happen.
Massive investment in safe cycling infrastructure required first. Without that, few people who don't currently cycle for pleasure, fitness or as transport will bother.
If johnson wasn't such a porker this would never have been floated.

We already give free gym memberships to patients. I think a bike might get used more. It's certainly more useful, especially to people on a low income

So how fat do I have to get to get a free bike?

Sounds like a good idea to me. Ideally it would be a pool of bikes available for loan. Patients apply for loan for a given period. Am sceptical that it'll ever come to fruition though.

Discussed at weekend...

Still a positive move IMO.

Trust so many on STW to find the cloud in a silver lining though.

No reference in BBC article from the weekend thread about any discussions with the RCGP.
For this to have any possibility of success it must be part of a comprehensive, properly developed, permanent strategy which is fully funded; by definition, this means long term.
Regrettably, it is none of those so...I stand by my view ^^^
It's just one in a series of soundbites.

I think you have to buy an e-bike, then mainline greggs and cake. Only once obese can you qualify.

Hear our bumbling idiot of a Prime Minister stumbling over his words, trying to say how we need a culture change for all the new cyclists that this is going to bring out? Then in the very next sentence saying we need separate cycle paths for those less confident to be more brave and erm er, what's the word the one I just used a few seconds ago oh yeah confident. Dork
