Following on from the "How long have you been MTBings" thread I thought that I would entertain/shock myself with a list of all the MTB's that have passed thro' my mitts over the years.

So, starting with my first in 1986:
Specialized Rockhopper - yellow, huge frame, chainstay mounted 'U' brake
Kona Cindercone - always wanted the Explosif
Nishiki Alien - stupidly short wheelbase
Marin Mount Vision Pro - beautiful bike, wish I still had it.
Proflex 885 - great in its day.
Cannondale Raven - stupid bike.
Orange Sub 5 - iconic.
Then the Santa Cruz obsession started:
Santa Cruz Blur - Great once I'd got shot of the Progression Suspension(?) rear shock.
Santa Cruz Nomad mk1.
Santa Cruz Blur LT - in Root Beer. Lovely.
Cove Hummer Ti - the one bike I wish I'd kept.
Santa Cruz Heckler - very capable bike.
Santa Cruz Nomad Carbon mk1 - Visual work of art (at the time).
Santa Cruz Tallboy - Lacking in travel.
Santa Cruz Tallboy LT - Great UK trail bike.
Evil Wreckoning - bought cheap and sold for a profit.
Santa Cruz Hightower - still got.
Speacialized Levo SL - Best bike ever!

So, average of 2 bikes per year over my lackluster 36 year MTB history. Some were kept for quite a while, others were the victim of frame swap outs and certainly most were not out and out whole bike purchases.

Lets see what you've got in your back-catalogue.

Specialized
Giant
Trek
Kona
K2
Cannondale
GT
Bridgestone
Tomac
Peugeot
Gary Fisher
Marin

Not that many for me:

KHS Montana summit 1994
Marin alpine trail 2006
2010 ish a 456 summer season
Prince Albert classic 2012- still in the family
2014 a Santa Cruz blur 4x still in the shed
2017 slot dropout 26 inbred. Built up rigid single speed then eventually donated to a good cause in feb 2020
2018 pinnacle ramin 5 frame donated by a riding acquaintance. Was built up then replaced then back to life as a monster cross thing.
Dec 2019 calibre sentry.
April 2020 last fast forward
So one bike only for 12 years, now 5 bikes in the shed (not counting the road bike), three get ridden regularly, and a new bike or frame every 6-12 months...seems to be progressing nicely...

Giant Escaper 23” clunker...
Giant Escaper 19”
Orange Aluminium O teeth rattler, 2ndhand. Developed crack in top tube. Orange replaced with new for 100£, i then sold on at a profit...
Trek 330 (in root beer, nice). Sold it a mate who kept it for 20 years...
Cannondale M2000 (think I sold to the lecht rocks as a commuter?)
Kona Explosif (with vee brake braze on and BRG respray). Loved this bike. It got nicked 😔
ProFlex XP8 (which I upgraded with noleen coil shocks). Noleen rear snapped so it got punted on.
Klein Attitude Race (in gold glitter). Sold it a mate who still rides it, still on original tyres, 15-20 years later.
Santa Cruz Heckler (w/ 5th Element shock) sold on, as took a mtb hiatus (went climbing instead)
Cove Handjob (tin can). Traded in for...
Cotic Soul (late Mk1 I think) black, my very first Cotic. Went through multiple guises, bit of a triggers broom really. Gave it the Loon.
Titus Moto-Lite (too steep, it got punted on)
Chumba vf2 (Air shock was awful, lacked rebound adjustment, coil replacement improved it but was still too steep, got punted on to fund...).
Cotic Soda (we didn’t get on I’m afraid, it also got punted on...).
Cotic Solaris (mk1 in orange) rode it three times then sold it to a mate to get...
Cotic Solaris (mk1 in green, the same as orange, only green 🤪). Hill bike, lives in shed.
Cotic Rocket (mk1, first one out of Cotic). I didn’t need a FS but I got LBS to get a demo in (so the shop guy could demo it really). We both bought one... turns out slack is what I was looking for... took another hiatus (punted on and used as deposit for litre motorcycle)
Stanton Sherpa (NewGen B+). Now lives in the loft.
Cotic SolarisMAX (mk1 B+, bikepacker mule, first batch out of Cotic, made their news page as it was a 2x off-piste Custom custom build...). Now lives in loft (next the Sherpa...)
Cotic SolarisMAX (mk2 longshot) sold it to get the SodaMAX but bought it back when the mate I sold it too also bought a SodaMAX. Now B+ bikepacker mule.
Cotic SodaMAX
Cotic FlareMAX (gen 2)

I think that’s the lot...

2015 Cannondale Jekyll Carbon 2
2015 Cannondale Trail 29er rigid with EBB for SS

Not sure how you're getting that figure. 18 bikes over 36 years is 2 years per bike last time I looked.

So, Metalheart has taken the lead with a history of 22 bikes ,but over an unknown period of time so we don't know the bike per year rate. We need the missing info Metalheart.

What is becoming obvious, although hardly surprising, is the level brand loyalty. For me, it took a significant leap of faith to move away from Santa Cruz to try Specialized, but in doing so I have seen how different bikes can be so, well, different. Always thought that VPP was the bees knees of suspension design, but I am very much liking the feel of the Specialized setup.

Enough with the pondering, on with the mental calcs of how much we have all supported the UK economy over the years!

Daffy beats me (and over a shorter period). Mine starts circa autumn ‘89.

There are also 4 roadies and 2 CX/gravel bikes in there too...

Youse have too many bikes! 😆

mid 80s, black and gold bmx, think it said harrier on it.
1990ish white raliegh maurauder.
2000ish, started using my brothers peugeot mtb, still rigid early 90s style, but lighter and with brakes that kinda work.
2007 gt avalanche expert - suspension is invented, as are disc brakes!
2011 genesis core 40
2018 - converted genesis to a bafang ebike
2019 - pinnacle arkose r2.

Looks like I'll be due something new round about 2025/26 ish 😆 I think full suss might get invented around that time. 😆

Maybe not in exact chronological order, but there or thereabouts

Carrera Mission. First 26” MTB, mid-late 90’s, upgraded everything, starting with lime green clubroost comp 2 bars.
02 Azonic DS Evo, first bike (frame) bought with my own earned money. Rode everything on it, at 6”1, with a 14” frame...
99 Kona Stinky. First full suss. Stolen ☹️
04 Apollo vortice. Cheap Halfords (I worked there) BMX. Hilarious fun. Broke a lot.
BSO with Corona beer branding. Cheap transport while finishing uni.
05 Specialized Demo 8. Did my best riding on this, culminating in a whistler trip. Lent the bike to a mate, never saw it again as was stolen 😭
08 Specialized SX trail2. Never really liked it, DH weight with XC geo. Sold on pretty quick. https://flic.kr/p/2kpHnMC

05/06 GT iT1. High pivot gearbox DH bike (a sign of things to come?). 50lb tank, brilliant fun. https://flic.kr/p/2kpDytc

03? Orange hitman. Bought to compliment the big GT. ended up selling both to combine into... https://flic.kr/p/2kpH4ZP

09 Intense Slopestyle. Ever changing work in progress. Was 3x9 with a boxxer at one point. https://flic.kr/p/2kpDyt2
On-one inbred SS. Cheap drunken SH purchase turned into bling commuter. https://flic.kr/p/2kpH4Rs

GT 24” pro cruiser. Lusted after all through uni, bought (off here) years later. Rode once, sold it. Never meet your heroes. https://flic.kr/p/2kpH4G4

13 Trek 1.5 road bike. Went to a demo event, loved the speed of road bikes, bought this as an entry to try. https://flic.kr/p/2kpDyrP
13 Trek Madone 5.2. Liked road biking, upgraded everything, Di2, Dura ace everything. Still got. https://flic.kr/p/2kpHnRa
14 Santa Cruz 5010 v1 carbon. Went on a demo event, tried one, declared it perfect and everyone else should just stop trying. I’ll be buried with this bike. https://flic.kr/p/2kpH5nh

14 Santa Cruz Nomad v3. Bought blind on the strength of the 5010, not disappointed. https://flic.kr/p/2kpH4SV

13 Santa Cruz Chameleon. Last of the 26” ones. Went to pick up some (free) stickers. Ensuing custom build came to a couple of grand... https://flic.kr/p/2kpH5ie
14 Specialized fatboy. Bought on a whim, proper laugh. Never rode this one in the snow... https://flic.kr/p/2kpDfrR
16 Specialized turbo levo. Went to a demo event, unaware of its existence. Tried to buy one there and then (had to wait 3 months for it to finally come into stock). Still got, now running 29”. https://flic.kr/p/2kpHDMQ

17 Specialized Sequoia. Brilliant commuter and fun in the woods, still got. https://flic.kr/p/2kpHDEv

17 Salsa mukluk carbon. Bought lose weight of the fatboy. Mission accomplished. Also used with 29” wheels Still got. https://flic.kr/p/2kpHDvx

18 Deviate Guide. Bought whilst feeling sorry for myself in hospital. Tally converted to HPP bikes now, hence... https://flic.kr/p/2kpH5nN

20 Deviate Highlander. Like the guide, but a better trail bike. Changing colour soon, watch this space. https://flic.kr/p/2kpHnLL

*Awaits Mamadirts contribution, might be a while 😉

Since 92

An emmelle mtb shaped object
a Marin
A Raleigh ti
genesis IOID
'dale tandem
Salsa Beargrease

I gave away the Emmelle, the Marin was stolen and the genesis was its replacement which I then gave to a pal. I still have the Raleigh, the fattie and the tandem

Not to good with the dates, however started in '91 with MTBs, before that racers with Cowhorn handlebars and reversed drops as well as a Raleigh Chopper and Tomahawk.

Trek 830 Antelope - yellow, black splatters
Saracen frame built up with parts, first bike build.
Marin Pine Mountain 95
Another Trek 930? 97
GT Aggressor 00/01
Airborne Lancaster, Ti everything. 01/03
Inbred 853 - originally black, then red, prob my fav bike of all, broke it😭
Santa Cruz Superlight, first and only full sus.10/11
Cotic Bfe in 853 of course!
Salsa a la Carte - green frame
Salsa el Mariachi - blue frame, start of zee 29er bikes.
Cotic Escapade - flirtation with road/ gravel, not for me Ronnie.
Salsa el Mariachi - General Lee Red current and only bike, fully rigid single speed at mo.

Out of that lot only 3 have been bought as full bikes, two Treks and the Marin, the rest built up from frames from the bay or here. Next step I think is to get on a frame building course to build me own bike.

Wow those are some pretty long lists from most of you!

My list is very small compared. Not going to list the bikes I had before getting a 26" MTB, plus I don't really remember.

Early 90s: Raleigh Activator 26"
Mid 90s: Borrowed bikes, one was a Kona Cindercone

Had my break....

2007 ish: BeOne Aspire 1.0 Hardtail
2008: Upgraded the frame to a larger BeOne Karma 3.0 frame
2010: Commencal Meta 5.5
2011: Frame snap, latest Meta 5.5 frame replacement under warranty
2011: Ridgeback Storm rigid - for commuting and road rides
2012: Nukeproof Mega TR frameset, built up with Meta parts
2016: Giant Reign 27.5, after the Mega was stolen
2018: Ragley Marley 1.0
2019: *cough* Ribble Endurance AL Disc

Some of the dates might be a bit off. But that's it for now. The Reign has been in the stable for over 4 years now.

Santa Cruz Bullit - 1999 - loved it but should have bought a large not medium
Santa Cruz Heckler - 2006 - in large, loved it
Kenisis Decade HT - 2007 ish still got the frame
Transition Covert - 2012 - awesome bike, should have bought a large not medium
Transition Scout - 2015 still got it and love it to bits

1999 Apollo BSO from Halfords. Got me started
2002 Gary Fisher Tassajara. Replaced fork, brakes, wheels, drivetrain, stem, saddle.
2004 Gary Fisher Cake 2DLX. Replaced tyres & brake pads, saddle, rear mech.

I still have all three. I ride so rarely it’s not worth upgrading any of them

I can't compete with these lists but anyway;

2000 Giant Boulder: Cro Mo frame, 21 speeds V Brakes, it got nicked.
2003 Giant Boulder: Alu frame, insurance replacement that was slightly better in every way than the one that got stolen, which made me think maybe it was worth spending a bit more money...
2003 Gary Fisher Marlin: Disk Brakes! 27 Speeds! and a fork that sort of worked. I gradualy upgrade everything then swapped the parts onto...
2004 Specialized Stumpjumper HT: My full on weight weenie phase, it got turned into a commuter and then a trainer bike.
2006 Specialized FSR S-Works: My first full-sus
2009 Santa Cruz Blur LT: A great handling bike but didn't quite fit and shat frame bearing every other ride
2010 Pace RC305: Meh, wanted to try a hardtail again but never really got on with it.
2011 Santa Cruz Superlight: Built up light for doing endurance races, gave it to the wife
2013 Turner 5 Spot: Always wanted one, it was a great bike I wish I'd kept it.
2016 Boardman Pro 29er: Fancied trying the 29er thing
2017 On One Codiene: Cheap 29er full sus - instantly made the 5 Spot feel prehistoric
2020 Whyte S150: So capable it feels like cheating sometimes

the whyte will be for sale soon.

It's a terrible habit.

have to say though, the vast majority were bought second hand. there are only a handful of frames new, and full bikes even less.

My first was a raleigh outlander - green paint job and bullhorn bars. Just saw a mint one on fb marketplace, 15 minutes away and £40. So tempting for the nostalgia trip....

Jesus people on here get through some bikes! In my meagre 15 years of riding, I've had the below and loved most of them!

2004 - Claud Butler Capewraith Disc - bought for me by the rent's, sold to my brothers mate to fund the Kinesis, he still has it to this day
2006 - Kinesis Maxlight XC120 - adore this bike, so many miles and memories, gradually stripped down and swapped to other hardtails, still have the frame in the loft, possibly my post prized possession.
2011 - Ibis Mojo HD140 - stupidly bought a medium because it looked less gate like than the large, still say this had the best suspension of any bike I've ridden, sold in 2015.
2012 - On One 456C - used parts of the Kinesis, didn't like it, sold in early 2013.
2013 - Stanton Slackline - built but never ridden as frame turned out to be faulty, returned for refund.
2013 - Cotic BFe - again a too small medium frame, but I did like it, in hindsight it was a bit chunky and dead feeling, sold to fund house furniture in 2016
2015 - Mondraker Foxy XR Carbon SE - The longest travel bike I've owned, rocket ship everywhere but felt like too much bike for me plus it rattled itself to pieces on most rides and felt very fragile weirdly
2016 - Genesis Datum - wanted a road/gravel bike and this looked ace, waited ages for it but never truly loved it, sold last year
2016 - Whyte T130C RS - If only it wasn't so weighty, loved it but my word for a carbon bike it was hefty, still a great ride though, sold last year
2018 - Cotic Soul MK5 - wanted a hardtail and the mercury Soul's looked amazing, was meant to be "budget", ended up not being that at all. Still got it for now but it's now gathering dust thanks to the next bike
2020 - Transition Spur - best/fastest bike I've owned and ridden, maybe it's the honeymoon period but this does everything I want it to and more. A beast going downhill and it flies up and along anything else, could be a weapon for an XC/marathon race return with racier tyres.

Think that's it, 11 in 15 years, thought it wouldn't be that high of a ratio considering I kept the Kinesis, Ibis, Genesis and Whyte for 4 years each!

Modern (at the time) bikes:

1989 Saracen Tufftrax.
1989 Orange Clockwork. Started my Orange obsession.
1999 GT XCR 4000. Hateful thing.
2004 Orange Evo 4.
2006 Orange 5.
2009 Orange 5.
2014 Orange 5 29.
2016 Orange P7.
2016 Orange Segment.
2020 Orange Stage 5. Still got.
2016 Cube Attain Pro road thing.
2017 Marin Four Corners Elite gravel/touring. Still got.

I've also had a retro thang since 2007. Far too many to remember but have been mostly 1989/93 and included multiple Orange Clockwork's, Prestige, P7, Alu Elite, Alu O, Vitamin T, Marin Pine Mountain, Eldridge, Bear Valley, Saracen Tufftrax, Trekker, Traverse, GT RTS-1, Ti Raleigh, etc, etc.....

Starting from 1997..

Something put together from my brother's second hand / cheapo / worn out parts bin around a gruesome generic BSO fat-tubed gas-pips frame

1999 - most of those parts transferred on to a generic 7005 hardtail frame (stickered as Shogun) and 2000 Bomber z5 - slowly changing the bits as the broke thereafter

2007- Move that fork to a geared inbred frame then later swapped the fork for a Recon - the alu frame travels in a friends hand luggage to Taiwan and gets a the cracked headtube replaced by the factory's prototyping team while he's having a chat with the management - then sits in my shed for a while

2009 - put road wheels on the inbred and build the alu frame up as a single speed with daft big brown schwalbe balloon tyres

2012 - by a Titus X Racer and swap the bit onto it from the inbred (changing back to MTB wheels) then have it stolen after 2 rides

2013 - use the insurance to buy / build up a Banshee Prime

Still ride the Prime - exactly as built in 2013 and the 1999 alu hardtail with the balloon tyres - sold the inbred frame during lockdown for the same price I bought it for 13 years ago.

MTBs only then, because I'm worried about Dezb's mental health, and it's a pretty short list for 30 years.

1989 Trek 830 - stolen
1992 Marin Eldridge Grade - now used by my son as a city bike
1999 Marin Mount Vision - eBayed this a couple of years ago
2009 Anthem X1 - now being used by elder daughter's boyfriend, only frame, shock and shifters are original
2014 Giant XTC Advanced 27.5 - upgraded wheels, still have this
2015 Sanderson Soloist - eBay bargain, only frame, forks and hubs are as I bought it, still have this
2016 Jeffsy CF Pro - still have this, completely stock apart from tyres as the original spec was pretty much impossible to improve on.

Right year, magura brakes, orange stem & forks, but not estay.

Just looked on retrobike and it is apparently a Trekker Hydrotech.

Just doing this as I've never sat down and figured it out...there's not all that many in the list but anyway...

1991 Townsend Colorado 'ATB'
1993 Saracen 'Limited Edition' - not sure what the frame was based on but it was blue and quite nice. Got stolen though 🙁
1993 Saracen 'Race Elite' - based on a Kili Flyer E-stay frame. Weighed a ton swapped the frame for
1995 Cannondale M800 'Beast of the East' - loved this thing. Snapped the back end off it eventually around 1997.

Started driving, got fat, didn't ride...

2002 Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo - Bought with my first pay packet after getting a proper job after uni. Didn't ride all that much until 2006 when I started a new job right next to Cannock Chase. Still got the bike despite selling it on a few years back. Saved it from the skip.
2008 Commencal Meta 5.5 - loved this thing. Cracked headtube around 2011.
2011 Nukeproof Mega - one of the 1st ones in raw. Replaced the Commencal
2013 Bought a 2010 Orange Crush. It was green. It got stripped and painted bright blue. Kept this a good while, only sold the frame last year. Finally admitted it was too small.
2013 Cube Stereo HPC - got a sweet deal on it. Raced it, took it to the Alps got annoyed with it
2015 Stanton Switchback - frame swapped from the Cube. 1st child came along which put any big trips/racing on hold. This thing has been on many adventures since as my main bike but is now run as a singlespeed.
2018 Nicolai Helius - bought off a chap on here as a frame. Anodised finish, looks amazing. Built with parts originally off the Cube plus some new wheels. Lovely thing, not ridden it since summer though.

So not many, I tend to keep hold of bikes as they work perfectly well. Don't need the latest & greatest to have fun. Mostly 'Triggers Broom' efforts too 🙂

It’s hard to tell if you really like bikes, or don’t like them at all!

I really like bikes, but don't own more than two at a time.

I either get bored with them quickly, or I end up enjoying riding bikes so much, that I get an itch for something different, rather than staying with the bike I like.

Some of them have been dogs to ride though. If I could afford a new bike I'd test ride stuff, but as most bikes that I'd like are £3k+ it seems a bit of a waste to bother the shops.
