I'm loosely planning a months campervan road trip for next summer, taking the good road bikes and thinking bike security. We have a small campervan so keeping the bikes permanently inside the van is a non starter & putting the bikes inside the van every time we stop sounds a right hassle.
Most likely we will be using our thule towbar mounted bike rack. I have been pondering making an metal / aluminium box to drop over the two road bikes whilst on the rack to keep them out of sight / a bit more secure. The box then securing to the base of the rack.
Has anyone done something similar? or have alternative methods of keeping bikes secure whilst parked up?
Someone on here mentioned that on some models of vehicle if you disconnect the towbar electrics whilst the alarm is set, it triggers, so they wrap an extension through the bike frames so that if they are removed, it sets the car alarm off.
I have on occasion put a personal attack alarm with the body stashed under the rack, and the cord looped around the wheels (as well as d-locks, cable locks etc) so at least it'd cause a racket if one of the bikes were lifted off.

Ooh thats interesting. I'm gonna try that with mine next time I fit it to see if works.
I think a metal box would be OTT and too heavy, but you could cover the bikes with a tarp and keep any locks under cover, then any scallys would need to be on the ball enough to actually check what is under there to realise they are not supermarket specials.
Other than that, your only option is a couple of cheap but long chunky locks and get them around the towbar somehow, I've got several sets of some huge Aldi chains that look the part.
