I have various clear out items, incl some wheels and tyres which are not worth posting, and no interest from ads on local FB pages so thinking of donating to a bike charity. Google suggests Bike for Good, but not sure if they take parts, or just full bikes and they haven’t replied to my mails asking same.

Any info on local charities Glasgow/south Lanarkshire who would benefit?

‘Community can cycle’ in castlemilk still going?

Common Wheel in Maryhill?

check in your local coup too. Our recycling centre has a container for bikes and they all find their way to Killie Can Cycle. Sometimes the preferred route to donate is via the council tip as it helps the council with their recycling targets

Is the charity bike thing still going at Pollokshaws West train station? I used to donate all my stuff to them. Great community outfit. The other guy who would know is Gerardo at Veloworld in Rouken Glen Park. They are also a not for profit community hub but more of a lbs than the other place.

Common Wheel - Neil who runs it hates mountain bikes. The guy is surly to say the least, downright obnoxious at his worst.
Bike for good - They get so much donated most of it is stripped and binned and they make plenty in funds and from cash donations to financial grants. That said, they do good works for sure.

Cant say much for the others. I last donated - frames/wheels/rims/parts et all to Soulriders in Pollokshields, as it's local to me.

He doesn't hate mountain biking - he hates the idea of people using Mountain Bikes for transportational cycling. He's right- they are slow and heavy and dirty to ride for the purpose of getting about town, which is what most of his customers will use bikes for -  but the British have been using the wrong bikes of one sort or another for transportational cycling for the last 40 years at least so his is a lost cause.

But Let's agree to disagree 😉 Just never visit CW while riding on an MTB 😆

Thanks, have messaged a few to see if they’ll take parts. But not Common Wheel if the guy has an attitude like that… We dropped a dog crate and some unopened bags of dog food at a glasgow south dog charity the other week and the wee nippy sweetie woman was enough to ensure we will not return… Sad that grumpy folk like that are front facing at such charity places as I’m sure they reduce business.

There’s more than one guy - Neil’s just the one everyone remembers meeting as he’s just quite ‘driven’ - either his mother was frightened by a mountain bike and left if with some deep seated irrational hatred of fat tires or he’s on a spectrum - the thing is, on absolutely empirical terms, within his frame of reference he’s right but he’s also only stating his opinion..... and it’s also worth considering what the objectives of Common Wheel actually are and who they are creating a space for with the work they do.

Places like that also don’t persist without persistence so they are places where you meet persistent people
