I bought a couple of roll for the house then thought it might work well in this context.

~3mm closed cell foam with foil. Obviously a 1-2 season thing on soft ground.

Is this on or off topic?

It's been suggested before on bikepacking.net as something used on the Tour Divide. Personally I'd go with a Thermarest Neo Air X-Therm as the weight penalty is worth it for the comfort. 😉

Fair point, you'd want to be confident of smooth soft ground.

Only £2 tho!

I'd consider something like it as an under layer to reflect heat back in but not as my only layer. Even closed cell roll mats are a bit crap since other kinds came along.

It'll work fine mate, you can double it up for extra warmth

It'll be more more robust than any inflatable, but the two downsides will be pack size and comfort

Modern mats pack a lot smaller and are much thicker so more comfortable

Camping in Ireland in the late sixties we slept on the bare ground. Then one day I discovered that if you folded a towel and laid on that you'd be warmer and sleep better.

People are pussies nowadays.

I used one of those windscreen reflectors for years as my sleeping mat for adventure races. Mainly because it was stonkingly light and i never slept on it for more than an hour anyway.
