...that new Beyonce 'Country' song in this instance!!

If someone sang that down the pub on an open mic night - the audience would barely look up from their drinks.

It'll probably make millions though. 🤷‍♂️

I love it when big stars reach the point in their career they can do whatever they want - See tom Jones and his duets and gospel album, Willie Nelson and his somewhat ill advised reggae album.

I do not like country mush at all - but that Beyonce song sounds pretty good for country to me and its her proving some versatility and that black women can sing country

Hopefully it’s massively annoying for ‘the base’

This is the problem right? It's so subjective. Case in point:

See tom Jones and his duets and gospel album

As far as I like anything by Tom Jones (i.e. I wouldn't dash for the off button if it came on Radio 2, but I'd never put it on Spotify), I'd say his duets with Nina Persson and Cerys Matthews are his best output.

Beyonce's country and western album seems to have annoyed the, lets face it often racist, US C&W audience, hence I'm all for it!

Absolutely. Doesn't mean it's necessarily any good (I've basically just heard the single - which is way too produced for my taste - to try to work out the banjo line on guitar). but she is trying something new. Plenty of "big stars" are happy to just turn the handle...

Hhmm - all music is art.

Art only has one intention and I believe that that is to provoke an emotional response (good or bad it doesn't matter) among the audience.

It seems to me that Beyonce has achieved that goal on MANY levels :o)

I wouldn’t say all music is art. A large percentage is just done for the money. You can’t tell me that S Club and Steps were in it for artistry.

Not heard the Beyoncé track but will give it a listen. Country is a broad church. There’s some absolute shite and then there are artists like Colter Wall, Jason Isbell, Tyler Childers, Amanda Shires and Sturgill Simpson.

This phenomenon, famously, is what "The Wall" is about. Still one of the greatest albums of all time, even if Roger Waters has turned out to be an enormous throbber.

When asked if he’d ever seen his movie Jaws: The Revenge, he famously quipped: ‘Never. I hear it’s terrible. However, I have seen the house it built and that’s terrific.’

Michael Caine I believe.

I thought "how bad can it be?"

Oh dear.

I think the lyrics were written by GPT-2.

She can afford to splash a few million on an album. Some silly sods were relieved for astronomical amounts of money to see her Tour recently. Can't stand her music personally.

When the writer of Lemony Snicket was asked what they thought of the (notoriously bad) film adaptation, they said that they found it frightfully hard to be critical of a project that had bought them a house.

The Zutons said the same of Amy Winehouse.

[ I think the exact quote was that it had paid off the mortgage in response to a question in NME about how it felt that your most famous output was someone else's cover version ]

Its a great film. Rated quite highly. Jim Carrey is fantastic in it and so is Billy Connolly

There's a recent TV series that wasn't well received. Maybe getting confused with that

Different scenario, and I can't think of any off the top of my head, but there's been a few instances of artists falling out with the record lable, but they are still locked into a contract to do another album, so they just churn out a pile of shite and say "there you go! there's your album! Bye!!!"

“ Not heard the Beyoncé track but will give it a listen. Country is a broad church. There’s some absolute shite and then there are artists like Colter Wall, Jason Isbell, Tyler Childers, Amanda Shires and Sturgill Simpson.”

Well, there’s Country, then there’s Country & Western, or Nashville Hat-acts. I’m very firmly on the side of the first category. Acts like Emmylou Harris, who started off playing folk clubs, became more country after meeting Gram Parsons of The Byrds, but was never really accepted by the Nashville music mafia, then had an album produced by Daniel Lanois and toured with him as part of her band, and has become an artist who can’t really be defined now. An extraordinary talent, very lucky to have seen her perform a number of times, including with Lanois. Also, on one occasion at the Jazz Café, supported by Gillian Welch, and Nanci Griffith turned up and all three were on stage together! A great thrill, that, as I’d seen Gillian and Nanci individually before, as well as Emmylou, so to have three great singers right in front of me, together in a tiny little room was an extraordinary experience. All three were/are pretty ‘country’, but a flavour I can happily live with.
Struggling to think of big musical ‘stars’ that turn out dross, ‘cos what I consider ‘dross’ I tune out and ignore anyway, perpetrators of such just become background noise.
There’s some so-called ‘comedian’, Michael something or other who I loathe with every inch of my being, which is why I can’t even remember his full name.

Michael MacIntyre? We saw him a couple of times many years ago in a little Sunday night club in Stafford. Before he got shite and famous. He was brilliant. I won't bother looking at his stuff now, but I guess he's fine with that, if not a little regretful that he can't do what he really likes.

“Jaws: the revenge” is the benchmark of terrible movies in our house, decades after we saw it. It really is awful.

Isn't that the movie that Michael Caine said he's never seen, but he likes the house he bought with the proceeds?

Didn't he have a massive tax bill after spending all his money on T-Rex skulls and the like?

I've encountered some "contractual obligation albums", but generally the better sort, where they release a live album or an album of covers rather than a regular awful album.

I love Michael Caine's comment about Jaws The Revenge, it reminds me of Orson Welles's
“I started at the top and worked my way down.”

See also Lil Nas X

I don't mind a bit of C+W Americana but it can seem a bit conservative / Conservative.

Three chords and the truth...

(okay four chords)

Three chords and the truth (starts at about 40 seconds. Worth a watch if you don't know this).

There are better versions out there but the original has charm. My version is more mogadon than crystal meth.

Not so much dross, but as the parent of tweenage girls, it's hugely irritating that Taylor Swift has done not one, not two, but three different special editions with different bonus tracks of her new album, and the bloody thing isn't out for another six weeks so there's time for more.

Tell me about it. I don't care that some people think that TS has talent and a bit of a saint. She is trying to persuade my daughters to part with every one of MY pennies so that she can stay rich. "If you buy four copies of that vinyl you can put them on the wall to make a clock", one of my girls told me recently. Yeah, how much will four identical albums cost? Why are they even telling me about tickets for her massive concerts which would cost me a whole month's pay? I'm developing a deep hatred of Taylor Swift! 😀

We said no to the Eras tour as by the time we got in (despite doing it as soon as we could), the only tickets left would’ve cost the same as a family holiday.

Don't doubt she has talent but frankly she’s so prolific she’s in danger of a Fall/GbVesque lack of quality control. Which may be the first time she’s been compared to MES.

In Country you're either a Brad Paisley fan (woke played for Obama) or Toby Keith fan (redneck for Trump). Not sure where Beyonce fits in but there are some talented ladies in country.

Eric Cantona's latest work is excellent. The episodes of le Voyageur starring the football legend are ace.
