Horse flies? You could writhe in agony for days if they get your blood.

Probably Horse flies. Lots locally, hard to notice, often bite before you’ve noticed them on you but usually easy to zap if you see them.
They literally have a razor like blade to cut with but it’s the junk they dump in you, especially if they’ve collected some grim Bactria from another animal to add to the mix!

I think I know the ones you mean. They just sort of hover there with stuff dangling beneath them that looks like they are carrying 50cal cannons underneath.

Don't know what they're called though.

Rob, I think that's the one I was thinking if but they're non biting, non stinging.

Can't think of anything in the UK with a worse bite than a horse fly but they don't really fit the ops description.

Flower bug?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_flowerbug

Do you live in Dorset or Hampshire? Could be Blandford fly if so.

St Mark’s fly.

they don't bite

Could be Blandford fly if so.

Blandford flies are only about 2mm long so don't seem to fit the description

It seems that they are St Marks flies, and I was wrong about the bite.
Somehow i associated these with cleg bites
Ive always been afraid of them. So now I know its alright!!
BTW I found 25% deet keeps the clegs off me

I must have them confused with something else.

I always end up with those in my helmet riding down country lanes with tall hedgerows.

They don’t taste great either 😩

Ugh they all sound rank. It's enough to make you ride around yelling "B*STAAAARDS!!" at the top of your voice

(maybe that's just me)

You have to practice not crashing while riding one-handed while aiming slaps at the back of your legs and neck.

Unlike midges, riding fast doesn't shake the ****ers off - they can fly at 60mph and will pursue prey persistently. The best plan is to wait until it's landed, tucked its napkin in, then clobber it.

Yep, let 'em land on you then give them a slap, they'll fall to the ground then you can grind the ****ers into the dust

Horseflies are bastards.

No idea what the OP is describing but that ain't them.

Blandford flies can crawl in through your ear, rummage around in your brain and as a result  cause confusion in the host. Mostly confusion relating to identification of flies. In severe cases victims have been known to announce their candidacy to run for president.

The OP by his own admission has attempted to defame and smear the reputation St Marks Flies. This may be a symptom of a Blandford Fly Brain Infestation.

nicko and martinhutch yeah
problem is I only have one arm at the moment. If I automatically try to slap them with the other arm I am instantly in agony since my broke collarbone hasnt healed yet
even turning round suddenly to look for them puts me in spasms of severe pain

That's a great way to end up involuntarily eating one 😆
