off the peg, build myself or bespoke?
I have a really big garden I hate, we need more space in the garage, workshop, gym, kids room. Anyone done similar that can share their experiences?
It needs to be Black!
IGMC
What are we calling big here, double garage size or proper big barn?
A mate just bought and built one of these: https://www.tuin.co.uk/Log-Cabins.html
He seems happy with his choice
I will get some measurements. I am thinking 4~5m by lots
Depending on your budget, what exactly you want, give that information and it'll be much easier to give opinions
@del those are nice. I like this one

I will plan this one out and use as a template and come back early next week
Building your own may not be much/any cheaper than buying a pre-fab, but you'll likely end up with something 10 times stronger at the end. Design around multiples of whatever lengths of whatever you decide to use are stocked at your local timber merchants to save a lot of cutting. The roof may need a bit of thought at that size - I'd be strongly considering sheet metal for lightness and longevity (like https://www.rollaclad.com/roofing-sheets.html - again, look locally, as delivery costs add up)
Get planning permission for something that big, unless you stick wheels on it!
this is singletrackworld. its the law that you build your own.
I will be building a tin roofed wooden framed workshop about 6.5x6.5m sometime. I searched around for inspiration and found these people.
A mate of mine is a semi retired builder and digger driver, he will help me do the concrete base properly (slight fall and crown in the excavation for drainage, plenty of hardcore for drainage, generous French drains on the downhill side for drainage).
The fun bit is working backwards from the finished sizes (designed to reduce wastage) to make the slab exactly the right size for the wall framing to sit right on the edge, meaning the inner and outer skins of the wall can hang below by 25mm to shed (groan) all the weather.
I really must get round to applying for planning, the house sits at the back of the plot in a conservation area so no “permitted development” easiness for me.
The pile of hardcore is now massive, my old Golf isn’t going to restore itself and I need somewhere to go hide from the family. And I love building stuff.
I built a prefab sip garden room last year. Very easy, went together nicely. Rubber membrane roof simple to do. I’ve clad the back and side, which I can’t see, in aluminium composite as I can get this from work. I printed cedar pattern on it with our UV printer. Much cheaper than the cedar cladding on the sides I can see. Ours is very warm. It’s warm in minutes with just a 2kw heater. Size 5x 3.5m so not super big but big enough for a bike trainer, rower and sofa bed & a desk. Cheaper than a loft extension!
