So I find myself endlessly looking at Pickups - no idea why but I've always wanted one.
So what's the best VFM used double cab pickup in the eyes of STW?

Ford Ranger or the Mazda it's based on if you do want a pick up. Otherwise, like he said. Get a van!

Used commercials at a bit of a high demand at the moment. Pickups hold value quite well, new ones selling quite cheap though at the moment. What’s your budget?
Was looking recently, 63 plate Ranger limited (like mine) 80k £10500. new Ranger wildtrak £25k (+vat). Are you buying for personal use or through a business?

If I could rearrange the alphabet, I’d put ‘U’ and ‘I’ together.

Aside from being sexy, what do you do for a living?

I always have a pickup ... for tax reasons... no tax reasons no pickup...

I have a current shape Navara and its possibly the best in respect to ride quality mpg etc and its just ok to drive about (actually its at its best on a motorway)

If you want cheap reliable as pointed out above the old mazda/ranger is the best valuefor money.

Are you looking to run it into the ground? Or something you'll move on again?

Old HiLux' seem to hold their value, thanks to top gear I believe...

Just been looking at pickups and decided that the Navara seemed the best of the bunch. Then my wife insisted that we should have a 7 seater, so now looking at the Nissan Pathfinder.

I thought it was going to be a guitar thread too!

My mate, a tree surgeon/landscaper has a 4 seater Mitsubishi Trojan, seems pretty decent, although he's has some issues with the electrics, i.e electric windows playing up.
The back seats are very small though, like a 2+2 sports car.

I joke with him that the electrics are just as bad as his old volkswagon. He does not appreciate my jokes.

How agricultural do you want to go?
I know someone has to buy them new, but I wouldn't for using them as intended, so would just buy on condition, they all rot and smoke.
If planning to hang on to it, my choice would be a late Defender 130, 6-speed box makes it far better over distance, the heating works, rear seats are actually big enough for adults and can't see them losing value.

I'd have thought the D40 Navara (2005-2015) would now be pretty much worthless due to the chassis snapping recall. You still see them out and about so I guess some passed the inspection, but I now wouldn't pay much for one and they are actually quite nice to drive and live with.

Thanks all.
Would just be for throwing the bikes in the back.
No work/business use.
Second hand ideally.

I live in the land of the pick-up and I still have a bike rack on a normal car (well ok a SUV but that's another debate) as do lots of others.

They only really work even here in summer for shuttling rough roads and the like.  Unless you have a tail gate pad then bikes in the bed = scratches and even with a pad there's still some.  There's actually less storage space inside than almost anything else so kit etc gets wet in the rain before you've even started the ride.

The fuel consumption is terrible and when there's no load in the bed the ride can be awful (bikes don't really weigh enough to counteract leaf springs...)

Me too. Then I looked at the VED...

I can't think of a less practical vehicle.

My other half has a Mitsubishi L200. I loathe the thing. God knows why she ever wanted it. She's never towed and she ain't a builder..

Really uncomfortable, keep smacking my head when I get in due to high floor/low roof, very harsh ride with stiff suspension, wallows and rolls about, rubbish fuel economy, can't get that much in the back and even if you can you can't leave it there.

Worst possible vehicles for anything. 👎

Just to add clarity to the above .... I have a pick up ...and a van .

If I need to do anything other than tow the trailer.....the van wins hands down.the load beds just so hopeless

but you can of course look past all that if it’s ‘for tax reasons’ 🙂

My vote goes to an Isuzu masquerading as a Vauxhall Brava, I had one and it never let me down. I hideously overloaded it with crap, flung bikes in the back, danced on it, drove it into bushes to pick apples and christmas holly. Moved houses, moved kids, moved bricks, did everything I asked of it.
I would have one again in a second.

The new Navara has proper rear suspension and its good, the front suspension still knocks like you have hit a pothole though....

OH wants a pickup, we have about 60 sheep and as the one who does the least miles and her job is local so she gets to drive the "farm car". Currently a freelander. I wont have a pickup. Dreadful things. But she refuses to see the advantages of a Transporter 4motion with a 2" lift kit and general grabber tyres 🙁

We'll probably end up with a FL2 for her, hopefully the SD4 as it has more power for towing. Reliable, not too big, capable off-road and very comfy inside.

I’ve had two pickups over the years because I really wanted them at the time, got rid of both fairly quickly, I liken them to a big enduro bike, great for the 5% of time you need them, a huge compromise the rest of the time, I’ve decided if I ever ‘need’ a pickup again I will hire one for the day lol

As an aside what happened to "sensible" pickups.

Low things for carrying stuff rather than massive 4x4 things with a bed so small you have to hang your front wheel over the back like a grade a bellend.

That’s the sort of pickup I’d find useful. Single cab, full length load bay, not 6 foot off the ground on stupid big alloy wheels and no daft stuck on styling bits.

Like this - Subaru Brat. Unfortunately it’s almost impossible to find one that isn’t as crusty as this image...

Ford P100, you still see them on eBay and they still fetch strong money for something that has probably been utterly abused in every way possible.

EDIT: Or they used to at least.

Tax breaks is what happened. The 5 seat, tiny load bed 4x4 exists to slip between a whole bunch of rules on VED, BIK and Operators License rules for towing for business use.

In all sorts practical applications they have real limitations - poor ergonomics, poor road handling and comfort, poor economy - to hit all those loopholes they have to be able to carry a ton in the load bed (proper length pickups with full load beds are rated to carry less weight) but the design puts all that weight handing out behind the rear axel. So whatever tiny thing that weighs a ton you find to carry doesn't really improve the poor handling. So in practical terms they are very badly compromised. Administratively though you can't fault them. If you have an accountant your accountant will tell you to buy a 5 seat, 4x4 pickup - they can be deftly navigated through a whole slalom of loopholes. If you don't have an accountant you should have bought an SUV.

In Europe. Not UK.

Would have made it kinda useful if they did it here.

The farmers I know either dont use pickups or, if they do, they drive around with a couple of bags of feed in the back to weight it down. Terrible vehicles unless if you actually need one.

A friend had one of these Skoda frog things. It was a strong look.... 😂

At least it was low. Couldn't fit naff all in the back though still, certainly not kayaks which is kinda what we did.

Op, you could maybe buy a van and have something brilliantly practical that drives well and is infinitely useful but when you get the pickup pangs, simply section off 2/3s of the load space so nothing longer than a kids bmx will fit in, intermittently stop and throw a bucket of water all over the contents to imitate weather, section off 2/3s of the door opening so that you struggle to get in and out, loosen the steering wheel for the wallow effect, remove the underframe of the seat so it's on the floor and sit on a piece of plywood for the ride comfort and wherever you park leave the back doors wide open so all your stuff can get stolen.

The rest of the time you'll have a van. Vans are the shizzle yo.

Hth 😉

Pickups. Basically rubbish for everything, unless you want to drive with half a tonne of rubble in the back.

I had one for work - it was hateful. I can't think of anything it did better than a van. It was even shyte offroad.

Just buy a van. You can thank everyone later.

I had a pickup 10 years ago (Ranger) and was looking for another a couple of years ago. I drove most of them (L200, Hilux, Ranger, D-Max, Navara) and decided to go with the Navara NP300 due to a combination of fuel economy and handling which was better than the rest due to the combination of coil and leaf. I wanted VFM, so specifically looked for non mega jizzbuster fantoosh models and went for a no frills Accenta with cloth interior and basic stereo. Ex privately owned, factory fitted canopy, Euro5 engine (no adblue). VAT already paid, and only 20k on the clock. Chucked some heavy duty seat covers in and it's been grand. 5 year warranty. I bought it at 3 years old (£14k no VAT), main dealer trade in and haven't had any issues. Pickups are definitely a compromise, but it suits me. Chuck whatever smelly pile of, sometimes literally, crap in the back then hose it down.

This thread has answered why pick ups are seemingly always driven by irate looking construction types. The Ford Ranger really should be renamed the Anger, judging by the amount of red faced men behind the wheel of them.

Aussie farmer mate reports that in his state (Vic) the Ranger is definitely the go-to vehicle. I used to ride with a techy CEO and he had a pink Skoda pickup that had to be taken home for the weekend by the worse performing salesperson. It was actually a very good vehicle and it used to convey a good number of us out on enthusiastic r and r sessions.

Not mine, and probably not best VFM, but the only pick up worth considering.

Although saying that, I had to git rid of mine as I kept smashing the sump.

I've had four - '07 Ford Ranger, which was a decent workhorse and actually ok off road, an '11 D40 Navara 2.5 manual, which I obviously liked, as I then bought a '13 D40 3l V6 auto - with a remap, the engine was great. With the right tyres on, it towed a heavy trailer round a field in foot deep mud. I then had a '16 5cyl 3.2 Ranger - lovely enough inside and looked the biz outside, but the engine was a dog - the new 2l bi-turbo's are supposed to be better.

I've now got a Discovery Commercial - lose 3 seats, but the back is more useable (I always had canopies on mine). It depends what you want from a vehicle. I tow a huge caravan and work in fields, so they suit me most of the time
