I was thinking cmax. We are looking at spending no more than £3,500. Probably want a diesel, safety first. Just a boring family car for us and the two kids. No need to transport pushchairs and the like any more, so just a large-ish hatchback is what we are after.

Any suggestions gratefully accepted. We test drove a cmax today and it was pretty good, just wondered if there were any other good suggestions.

Go for an Estate not an MPV. More usable space. Bikes easier to put on roof or in boot. I've got a yeti now which is great but the next car will be an estate. Diesels all much of a muchness. All will cost big bucks if they go wrong, all will at some point have DMF probs. If you don't do many miles get a Petrol every time. Fords are very good, I would go for a Focus estate over a Cmax or even better a Mondeo estate. I had Mk3 Mondeo Estate TDCI 130 it was excellent till the injectors failed at 115k. Would have another low mileage one in a heart beat and then trade it on at about 100k. Good luck.

Berlingo?
Touran?
Golf+ ?
Zafira?

At your budget limit problems will be inevitable and luck will play a large part in your purchase 💡

eg a work colleague has just bought a Focus ST from a dealer many miles away. The usual full service history, workshop service before buying guff etc! Rear end rattle and a misfire within days! Googling shows that these are know issues with that model/age of car!!
Daughter & Partner bought cheap Focus from a "friend" all fully serviced etc, needed a clutch within weeks!!

No simple answer when it comes to " budget" motors I'm afraid( ex motor mech form 40yrs ago)
