We've had best band and worst band but have we done best support act yet? Ie, the sort of band that outplayed the headliner (ie, like Van Halen did when they burst on the scene and blew Sabbath away – unfortunately I was too young to see that).

For me: Cheap Trick supporting Motley Crue circa. 1986

Needs Atomic Dustbin supporting someone. Wasn’t a huge fan but around Kill Your Television they had lots of energy and the crowd goes wild which was what it was all about 30 odd years ago.

I think you've duplicated the thread that started the current live music thread explosion!;

Not quite fitting the thread title, but I still rage/ chuckle at Kings of Leon at Leeds 2006 making way for the headliners who were... Razorlight.

That's not aged well as a running order

I saw The Heavy at the Liquid Room in 2013. They were supported by a band called The Computers, who were brilliant. I can't say they outperformed The Heavy, as they were great that night too, but I'm not sure I've ever seen a support act fire up an audience as well as The Computers did that night. They got proper audience participation going and everything, which is an incredible achievement for a band when the audience isn't actually there to see you and don't know your songs.

Ah !
Now this 1 is really easy,

Without a shadow of doubt it was when I saw Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers as support to Nils Lofgren at Leeds University.....

Hmmmm It has to be the lineup for REM's Monster tour in '95. We saw them at MK Bowl and had the pleasure of Sleeper, The Cranberries and Radiohead before REM came on. I liked all of them at the time, it was Louise Werner's birthday, we had a brilliant time!
