I've started buying "not going out" jeans from supermarkets for general daily use. Have used Sainsburys but wondered what the quality / look ratings are for jeans from other supermarkets. Who has the most passable decent quality you wouldn't be ashamed to be seen in the pub with them on?

I wouldn't know because I've been searching for some jeans in any supermarket for the last few weeks and have been unable to find a single pair for my very average shape. 34/32" regular fit. Obviously they have become very popular, or every male in the world has suddenly become very weirdly shaped and so the supermarkets have stopped stocking normal shaped jeans.

I can only comment on sainsbos jeans, (I find them good fit/value) so can't advise specifically.

decent quality you wouldn’t be ashamed to be seen in the pub with them on?

I can comment on this though 😀 - jeans are jeans if you ask me, they all look the same as long as the cut fits your figure and are reasonable quality.
NEXT jeans for example are more expensive and the denim seems to be paper thin/poor quality so I avoid them as they just don't last. That said I've not bought jeans from next for several years, so maybe they have a better supplier now, or not, I dunno.

I've not got shares or anything but ...
currently starting £26 though I haven't paid that for any of mine as I usually wait for a sale.

I get my 'cheap' jeans from Next online - a huge range of fits (from skinny fit to boot fit) and a vast range of waist/leg length options.

@idlejon Sainsburys seem to have really random sizes in stock in-store, might be easier to buy them online.

As long as you have very long or very short legs. I can never find any to fit my 31'' waist / 30'' leg.

Thanks, I've checked my local a few times lately. I eventually got some black ones from H&M for £20. Decent fit and quality seems about the same as any other jeans I've ever had.

@johndoh - fair point. I'm actually the same shape as an orangutan so have short legs/long body and have had Levi's, Wrangler and Lee jeans from TK Maxx recently in short leg fitting. Can you not become a weirder shape? At least I now know that being the same proportions as a chimp has one advantage 😀

I have been wearing Tesco jeans for the last four or so years which is when I started commuting by bike (only a couple of miles).

I needed a "stretch" denim for that as my previous choice (Debenhams Manta Ray brand) was not stretch and did not last when used for riding.

They are classically styled and available in slim, straight (my choice) or loose fits and with a range of shades. They last well and were approx £24 when I last bought a pair. The prices do sometimes drop a bit.

The thing that frustrates me a bit is that they come with a brown leather belt of fairly dubious quality. I would rather they lost that and knocked a quid off the price.

M&S they're about £30 a pair and fit well, come in proper sizes like 30/L too for us normal shaped folks 😉

Does not compute.

I once bought a pair of Tesco Value jeans for like £4 following a wardrobe malfunction (someone dropped their lunchtime take-away onto me). I wouldn't have won any style awards (like I would anyway) but for the price they were surprisingly decent for slobbing about the house in and lasted for ages.

Costco for me, they usually have several proper brands if you are after that, but will always have a selection of jeans, chinos and cargos under £20. These are astonishingly comfortable, I bought one in each colour.

I’ve found that anything from Next, Sainsbury’s or Tesco have pockets sewn with the most fragile substance known to man and crotch areas that wear out very quickly. Cheap jeans are like cheap bikes. They seem okay until you get a proper one.

You say that but I've had Levis that were equaly rubbish.

The best jeans I ever had were Wranglers, must have had them from the age of 17 to 27 before the knees wore out.
Dunno what thier quality is like nowerdays, though, a lot of brands just seem to trade on the name these days whilst offering a cheap product.

I usually buy from Matalan. £15 or such like and generally last 10-15 years before they become scruffy enough to be relegated to dusters. About £1 per year.

I'm still testing the new stretchy fabrics, I'm not convinced they'll last as long but we'll see.

I bought a couple of pairs of Tesco jeans a couple of years ago, not expecting too much but as I wear jeans 7days a week (unless it's warm enough for shorts), and they get a lot of abuse, figured giving some cheap jeans for work a try wouldn't hurt...

2yrs later and been really impressed! Were only about £15 each iirc too...

Fit is better (subjective for sure, but I hate modern overly fitted jeans, I prefer looser/baggier fit), they are a partial stretch material too (really helps when doing anything practical, bending over especially), and they're cheap enough I don't really care about them and would replace again in a heartbeat.

Even look half decent (as long as not covered in work muck!) too...

has TJ been banned, I'd have put money on him being here by now chuntering about over 25's in denim.

I've had all sorts from George at Asda through to rare selvedge stuff and I reckon £ for £ Uniqlo. A bit more than supermarket at £35-40ish, but non-selvedge prices for selvedge denim.

I've wanted some hebtroco moleskin trousers for ages, when I have some cash I'd like to treat myself but I've been saying that for about three years!

Anyway, like the OP I wanted some cheap but comfy jeans, normally go for washed black or navy. Walked into M&S and they had a moleskin range for about £45. Love them, soft and warm. Now I want the Hebtroco ones even more!

I'm a clothing snob so mostly wear Nudie jeans.  For dog walking duties I picked up a pair of Wranglers in TK Maxx (which whilst cheap mostly seems to stock jeans that are a weird cut) and have been very pleased with the quality and fit.

Not at all.  its just a good example of what is wrong with how middleaged men dress and its easily relatable.

ie - if Clarkson would wear it its wrong

There is also the colour issue - why do 90% of men wear clothes with such a dull palette of colours.  Beige on beige  perhaps a bit of dark blue

Mmm, nice.

This is why you need to think carefully before buying cheap clothes. I don’t want to come across all Peak-STW on this but this is one of the many reasons I won’t buy supermarket or ‘fast fashion’ clothing. I’ve just bought a second pair of Hebtroco jeans and before that it was Howies… I know they’re pricey, but they were considered purchases that will last me a long time and I can wear them knowing I’m not supporting somebody else’s misery.

Right. Caught my already holed jeans on a badly stored motorcycle silencer so, I'm going in!
They were the only pair I had left that I didn't entirely dislike.

Frankly I would rather be hit in the face with a hilariously oversized adjustable spanner than go into an actual shop, never mind the pure horror of trying on clothes in said shop, but needs must.

Criteria is, it's got to be near Halfords for something else so it's looking like Supermarket type jeans from either TK Max, Next and Sainos.

Man, I hate having to buy jeans 😐

They mostly have individual booths with doors or curtains these days so you don't need to get changed in the aisle and have everyone stare at the holes in your keks, you know that, right?

@nickc - 🤣👌🏻🎯💯

@Kayak - Uniqlo do mail order, in fact I believe they only have stores in London. Once upon a time, it was best to try their jeans on, because when I tried a pair while in London for something else, my normal size was way too small, and I had to get 34” waist, the length at 34” was perfect, but the last pair I bought I mistakenly ordered 32” waist instead of 34”, (first pair in a few years, I don’t wear jeans much) and the size was perfect. They’re Japanese selvedge denim, and came with the cuffs turned up, and even then the length was spot-on. £34 a pair, in unwashed dark indigo. They’re superb quality, classic style straight leg, just like original 501’s, but no decorative stitching or anything like that.

I too find rapid thigh burst a problem with sainsbury jeans....as I do with 501, gap and so on!  Sainsbury and m&s have been my supplier of menswear denim troo's for the recent past.

Tesco's are OK - seem to last. I usually get them covered in bike oil, so never spend much. Can't wear 'skinny' jeans/501's due to cyclist's thighs.

Tk Max, Next, M&S, Sainos, in that order.

No, no, no and NO! 😐

Doesn't help that the type I want now (Bootcut, because I only wear boots) are desperately out of fashion.

I don't want some skinny abomination halfway up my shins, ruffling up on top of my boots.

I'll have to mail order some I think.
Maybe they've still got some left over from the 90s 😊👍

Only jeans I have found worth spending more money on were double thickness thigh fabricator jeans when in Canada. Not something you get over here. Fashion jeans tend to be no better built than cheap jeans and frequently worse.

I gave up on supermarket jeans a couple of years ago. PCW meant they only tended to last 3 - 6 months. I've now gone crazy and own 5 pairs of Hebtroco jeans which should last me a lifetime 😅

Hmmm.... I bought some "Levi's" 511 off Ebay for about that much. They certainly aren't the cloth that the listing claimed, and there's something not quite right about the label (not the leather patch, the inside label with all the care instructions on). I'm fairly sure they aren't genuine, but the quality isn't noticeably different so I'm happy enough.

The last pair of jeans I bought fairly recently were from a charity shop. £5. Girlfriend told me they were a Tescos brand. W30/L30 they fit perfectly. They're pretty much as good as new, probably belonged to some kid who grew out of them.
