I'll kick off with She sells Sanctuary the cult...
what yer got ?
tight!
Something by Fugazi? The main thing I remember from seeing them live was how damn loud the snare was.
Yeah can't miss it on this!
Came here to say She Sells Sanctuary. 🤷♂️👍 I can’t play the drums but I looked after a kit for a friend once for a week while he moved house. Spent the entire week with headphones on trying to play along with that!
I give you the Violent Femmes and Add it up...
None at all. Sure it helps the band keep time but standing next to one being hit hard for few numbers is unpleasant.
But on topic, for persistant irritation Téléphone get the prize:
Does the drum roll at the start of Only Shallow* count?
*about the only distinct sound on all of Loveless.
John Williams’ Theme from 1941
..and I've kissed Margaret Thatcher's shoes
I saw the Cult at Rock City same night after Siouxsie and the Banshees at the Royal Concert Hall, the contrast to Budgie who was all about the toms was quite something. The Mission Were support for the Cult. Siouxsie had a broken leg and perched up on one of those theatrical barstools with arms to swing about on like Jim Kerr used to have.
Anyway for snare, hard to ignore Stuart Copeland
Surely this has got to be on this thread (skip to 1:26 for the uninitiated)
I must've subconsciously loved a snare back in the day 😆
oh my youth
Just popped up on my Youtube feed.... classic snare
John Williams’ Theme from 1941
I keep thinking they're going to start playing the intro to the A-Team 🤣
Live it very much 👍
Like midlifecrashes, Stuart Copeland was the first name that came to mind...
She Sells Sanctuary is a LOUD snare, not a good snare. That's like saying the penny farthing is the best bike because it has the biggest wheels
James Brown is a good shout though. Max Hallett aka Betamax of Soccer96 and The Comet is Coming always has a great snare sound too.
David Axelrod too. Loads of space. Oh, and Mitch Mitchell for the Jimi Hendrix Experience. I do love a good jazz snare in a rock context.
Oh yeah, and Jaki Liebezeit from Can - Halleluwah is a favourite!
Another Roses
Check the intensive snare…
Go on, give us a snare rush.
My two noted drum songs: Here Comes The Fear by Doves and All I Wanna Do by Cheryl Crow.
Give them a listen before judging me.
Stewart Copeland yes indeed. I was thinking "No Time This Time". Copeland's drumming with The Police owes a lot to Reggae which has a very tight high pitched snare.

There Goes the Fear is one of the finest tunes ever recorded, but if we’re after drum stuff then surely it’s got to be …
Very glad to see a couple of folks up there suggesting Fugazi. Came in here to say it too. 🙂🥁
Very strong snare in this track.
A massive yes to Barry White. Also the track I'm Going to Love You Just A Little More has a classic drum break.
And while we're on the subject of soul greats....

I'm afraid you'll find that Jimmy Chamberlin has the best sounding drums. And cherub rock starts with snare
Post punk snare. Always thought Pete Defreitas' snare in 'show of strength ' was particularly tasty and well micced, not too eighties sounding.
And the snare in 'light pours out of me' is very eighties and compressed but arguably influenced I am the resurrection?
Snare AND all the others in some classic New Model Army
Can we throw down some General Levy? 😅
ALL JUNGLISTS!
All the above have great drum sounds but not the snare in particular. For me this snare sound has been pretty influential.
Fools Gold.
wait.... wait......there!
Also the best trombone solo
Why 'Snare Drum' singular - how about 'Snare Drums' and have a few in the kit
Some great tracks on Spike
Little drummer boy by king and country. There is only one instrument that isn’t a snare drum
@Roterstern you may want to reconsider your sweeping statement if you look again at what I posted on the first page 😀 (though the amen break probably merits being mentioned at least twice in this thread).
@fingerbang agree I've always love sound of the drums on Gish especially on Rhinoceros.
Some nice snare work on this
Flaming Lips - Are you a hypnotist?
Bloody impossible to drum along to!
This. Probably one of the best drummers too.
The top comment in YouTube agrees with me, so I must be right 😄
That Flaming Lips drummer has skillZ! I always preferred The Terror album, gonna check it for mad snares now 😁
Best snare sound, for me, is this one. Pretty simple but I want to know what they did to make it sound like that.
Not the least interesting fact about Loveless is that Colm O’Ciosaig was ill for much of the (lengthy) recording so his drumming style was entirely recreated from samples.
Can't believe there's no Calexico in this thread

Re NMA Inheritance - as I heard the story at the time, Rob’s kit was set up & recorded in the lift at the rehearsal room in Little Germany, Bradford. I used to practice at the same place & I don’t think you’d fit my kit in that lift. So maybe it was his Slingerland Jazz kit. Or maybe ‘just a story’. I never got round to asking him 🙁
I always liked the snare on those old Barry White records. Super tight and compressed. A unique sound to my ears.
Both have been sampled a bazillion times because they sound great.
Snare and no Motown?
For me, Fyfe Ewing's drumming defined the early Therapy? stuff:
This one is alright.
RHCP Chad Smith plays a pretty mean Snare Drum in My Lovely Man, off the Blood, Sugar, Sex Magik Album.
Killing joke?
I like that the drummer didn't change out of his waders for the vid.
More cymbal than snare but still good.
Edit: missed transmission has already been added, d'oh!
