I bet they didn't realise there were so many other things called Smith when they picked the name.
This is like being asked to pick your favourite offspring.
Ask was the song that really got me into The Smiths, and Cemetry Gates is probably one of my favourites, if I had to nominate one.
i think that was the whole point of the name.

This Night Has Opened My Eyes, I would add to the thread. For me, The Smiths were one of those bands that had a few really great songs but not up there with the greatest. Whatever you think of Morrissey, without him, the band wouldn't have got as far as they got on the songs alone.
Who do you count among the greatest, out of interest?

After they have been fighting for 8 hours solid, one of them has refused to eat their dinner, the other has drawn all over the wall and the baby is running around with no nappy covered in shit. Your tea has gone cold and dinner is burnt.

The revival of this thread got me listening to them again yesterday.
Musically, they really are stunning. And frankly - Morrissey the person aside - Morrissey the singer is perfectly suited to the band in the sense that I love the juxtaposition of his Anglican-choir-style sound with the soaring guitar of Johnny Marr.

Daft question really, but never mind. Probably have a different three next week.
I couldn't give a shit what Morrissey does, says or thinks these days.
For those brief years, in my eyes the Smiths were the embodiment of beauty and their legacy for me is completely untouchable.
I can only thank my lucky stars there was never a prospect of any kind of reunion. The ultimate Leave-Things-Be.
Johnny Marr is a wonderful human being but his recent playing of Smiths songs (much the same as Morrissey's) means no more than somebody playing a Smiths cover at an open mic.
I genuinely could not care less about anyone else's opinion of the Smiths. Just doesn't matter to me, they were mine.
