Is it the Pentlands? The train to Edinburgh is 4.5 hours so that's doable for a long weekend. Any other places?

Certainly a few spots in the Pentlands*, though depends on your definition of "wild". If you can manage the sleeper then the routes to either Inverness or Fort William open up many more possibilities.

* I can suggest a couple of spots by PM

Pentlands is okay but a bit of a waste of a 4.5hr trainride!

Sans bikes?

Busses or train would get you alot of places?

What are you looking for scenery wise

Fair point, but it does mean you get to a bit of Edinburgh too which is always amazing.

If there is a better place that is easier to get to then I'm all ears!!

I am tempted to try a sleeper again, mostly because it will get me to some amazing parts of Scotland, but my previous experiences have been that it's an expensive way of getting a terrible night's sleep!

Yep, sans bikes, and after anywhere with a gorgeous view. So I'm guessing somewhere bumpy!

Go to Pitlochry, walk out along the River Tummell to Loch Tummell for a woodland spot with waterfalls.

Or, one stop more to Blair Atholl will give you a proper wild camp spot or 50 up Glen Tilt, with accessible Munro's.

Or get off the train at Lockerbie and head for the local hills there.

Get the train to Corrour - what could possibly go wrong?

I've tried the (old) sleeper both with just a seat (never again) and cabin/bunk. However my approach on recent trips was cheap advanced ticket on a fastest train straight from work to Glasgow or Edinburgh then cheap hotel (or hostel) followed by an early morning train north. You only arrive a couple of hours after the sleeper would, it's cheaper and I get a better night's sleep. When Virgin had the franchise I got some excellent first class deals too- makes the journey much more enjoyable. Maybe the new sleeper service is better.

Others know more, but I've had an enjoyable time wild camping with my daughter along the coast near North Berwick. What would people think of Arran or the Isle of Bute? It's always special when you have to get a ferry.

Fast train to Glasgow, stay Premier Inn in the centre and set off on NCN route 7 or "The Badger Divide", wild camp near Killin....

Bute is a bit meh, Arran is brilliant.

Always fancied the sleeper, but it’s pricey

Have taken the train to the lakes for the weekend a couple of times, with my bike. Works well

Having walked to camp from a lot of train stations in Scotland it depends on how far you want to walk. Blair atholl and up glen tilt is mighty fine. PLenty of others I know but all north of the central belt

We do a lot of camping from railway lines - to the point I am beggining to run out of new places to go from stations. I certainly wouldn't come all that way for the pentlands

what are you looking for? Berwicksire coast can be very nice.

Fast castle on the Berwickshire coast would be a cracking spot as long you have no history of sleepwalking

Get the train to Glasgow, suprisingly quick. Bike, bus or train to Balloch then jump on the ferry.

Probably the best answer to this question is "Pick a spot wherever you like".

Corrour. Walk out to Dalwhinnie and you’ve got Ben Alder Cottage as a halfway bothy stop if weather is poor. Train from Dalwhinnie (might be able to catch the sleeper from there too).

Dalwhinnie train station has a waiting room big and quiet enough to sleep in too.

If you have enough time corrour to dalwhinnie is a really nice walk with the possibility of going over the top of ben alder if yo want. I did it with two nights camped - but that was going over ben alder and with two kids with me aged 13 and 15

I've spent a night at Glasgow Central after missing the last train at the end of a tour. Was OK - guard put me on a carriage with other touristy-folks and woke us up when he went off shift at 5am.

In response to OP: I've wildcamped a mile from Bridge of Allan on several occasions 🙂
