I've been wearing running shorts the last couple of days as the mesh liner is way more comfy than cotton hipster boxers. T

I'm going on holiday in a few weeks where the temperature will be similar. Can I get pants made of a similar material to the liner in my running shorts, that aren't really expensive?

Reebok wicking trunks - I've even got two pairs with much more mesh than the others.

Anyone from the 70's remember the kids yellow y-Fronts made of some probably nylon holes material.

Anyway bock on track - Decathlon have some silly cheap Kalenji running boxers which seem to wick reasonably well about a £5, under armour also do this stuff but more expensive.

Decathlon Boxers

TBH I'll wear the slightly elasticated jean shorts with a baggy top and freeball or cotton sweat shorts if Im sat around not doing much.

You can also go down the er Jockstrap route if your feeling adventureous 🙂

Step 1 have an advert on n ITV4 TdF coverage that looks like it was made by a team on the Apprentice.
Mrs BigJohn however went a bit quiet watching it.

I don't want to wear running shorts all the time, I'm a man of sartorial elegance 🙂

They're not just for the summer, I think my regular pants are too warm for half of the year anyway.

Actually, these are the best. I have a pair in white that I break out when the temperature gets to a certain level. You need a pair of briefs on underneath to keep the boys in check. You need thick skin mind. Went to a rave in mine a couple of years ago on one of the hottest nights of the year. Some guy came up to me and said "mate, have you just come out in your underpants?" 🤣

Surely old school loose fitting boxers made of non stretch material (like a lightweight short) are coolest. Allows some circulation and IME way comfier in any warm weather than any close fitting underpants.
Obvious and boring retailer for such a revolutionary garment:
https://www.marksandspencer.com/3pk-pure-cotton-pattern-woven-boxers/p/clp60503978

PS beware of polycotton pretenders or poorly fitting alternatives from well known supermarkets.

@slowol.

Three words for them.

Soggy cotton.
Chafing.

Honestly, a set of good wicking fabric something's that stop floppage and don't have seams are a wonderful thing.

Such as.

Look good but bloody expensive! I’d need to wear a pair per week.

I don't seem to have a problem with my normal M&S microskin undies. Perhaps I just don't sweat much.

Normally wear lazy panda bamboo boxers from sockshop which are pretty comfy. Today I've opted for some Chinese (mildura) merino boxers. Been pretty comfy most of the day except under the elasticated waistband... Bit sweaty there!

Boxers are about £12 from aliExpress OK for normal wear but they have a seam down the crack that seems to ride when hiking.

The decathlon ones above or M&S microskin autograph things.

Definitely not cotton.

Drac are you the one who needs two hands or one of the others?

As an aside the cock and balls is hardly the most aesthetic appendage at the best of times, in what possible word is showing them of all squished up going to improve the situation?

M&S microfibre Autograph and a decent dash of medicated talc after a cool shower.

Funny. Talcum powder is considered dangerous in Australia, presumably because of the association with asbestos.

Anyway Howies modal are the best i've found. Definitely not merino or cotton.

... But if it's really hot, just a good 2.5 tonne ratchet strap does the job.

I thought it was because of aluminum powder or something, a bit like why some deodorants are unpopular.
Might be totally wrong though.

As @onewheelgood, step one.

Nice and supportive and keep me in order in Australia's summer so perfect for current UK conditions.

I think it’s also about the flammability risk when it’s dispersed in air (bizarrely)

Not supporting the local brand Aussiebum 🙂

Ooo er bit like coming out the pant closet but my guilty secret is I have a few pairs of the bamboo ones and they are brilliant.

Not saying it’s a brand for everyone - “if you doubt yourself wear something else” as their marketing says.

May get you the wrong or right attention in the gym apparently 🙂

Tbh at £5 or a cheaper €5 I reckon you’d struggle to get cheaper and they are consistent in sizing, cheap Ali express stuff can be weird sizing.

Brief update (ahem)

I remembered I hvae some Decathlon running briefs, which don't look any worse than briefs from certain designer brands, and I was surprised at how well they performed. So after all that the answer was already in my drawers!

Looks like nobody has actually found mesh underwear despite the wealth of answers.
Some hiking shorts have a mesh inner

I think it’s because it probably doesn’t really work as well for wicking as the other materials and you can’t really wander around in them due to them making you look like a porn star and people are still conservative about their under crackers.

I remember being amazed that my m8s mums were still buying their underwear in their 20’s and then by their wives in their 30’s

I had some Saxx boxers for Father’s Day after Mrs P heard about them on the off menu podcast. Not cheap, but soooo comfortable, I wore them yesterday and they were perfect all day.

About £15 a pair though, but I’m going to slowly replace all of my keks with them

These work pretty well for me in the heat, and are partially mesh... http://www.groupon.com/dispatch/uk/deal/four-pack-mens-breathable-mesh-boxers-2?utm_source=&utm_campaign=UserReferral_ma

Just spotted that they're sold out in anything other than stickman size (26+28") but maybe they'll be back in soon?

Normally just buy a pile of Hanes cotton boxers from target when I’m in the US. Proper Doc Brown pants. Fit & forget.

When motorbike touring in the heat I’ve been using endura short liners. Recently though I went and bought a pile of six2 Carbon socks. These are amazing at keeping my feet cool and not smelly, and have made me consider their carbon boxxers which are the nearest thing I’ve seen to mesh pants.

why not just enjoy the sensation of peeling your sack from your thigh and realising how much like it is to getting another rasher of bacon out of the packet .......

Personally, because I'm not going to grill what I peel off my thigh in slices and put it in some granary bread with butter and brown sauce.
