You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Inspired by the 'Strange House Design' thread and the perceptions of what is good value...I thought it might be interesting to see what the reality is like in different parts of the UK.
So, with the price point set in funkermasterp's thread at £315,000 shall we report back on what's in our patch? Perhaps use Rightmove, add your postcode and select the '+ 5 miles' filter (so no location/privacy concerns)
I'll offer up this terrace in Kinver (great area for biking)

Drive, shed thing out back for bikes, nice area...

One bed. Not even sure it's a bedroom TBH.
Does it have windows...who knows!
It is whymsical though!

Right move is in £25k increments.

That'll be a 1 bed apartment around here:
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/142766054
Handily close to the triangle for a convenience store/takeaway, close to meadowbank park and Dorking centre too. Busy road though. But then you have all that the Surrey hills has to offer on your doorstep!
Best I could find. Pretty shocking how little £315,000 will get you.

"the prestigious Kensington Road in Reading"
no onward chain
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/86660055#/?channel=RES_BUY
I can't figure out what's prestigious about it. It's just off Oxford Road / Wes Reading which is why they're being specific and not just saying what suburb/area it is.
No onward chain, was the previous occupant murdered?
That'll get you a 4 bed detached with garage and garden around here.
Loads of choice - some 'better' houses, i.e. bigger, not a sterile box, etc. within search radius for less money but not in areas I'd choose to live in. Hence this:
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/142804091
Characterless and packed into a typical-for-that-time estate. Detached 4 bed, 3 bath, garage, 2-car driveway. Decent enough area. Decor all liveable. Walkable to town centre and train station (direct trains to Glasgow/Edinburgh/Stirling <30mins). Local biking more suited to gravel but 25mins drive to Stirling/Bridge of Allan for the Ochils/Dumyat, <1hr to Comrie, 1hr-ish to Dunkeld, <1hr to Tweed Valley. 10mins walk along canal path to the Kelpies or 15mins in the other direction to Falkirk Wheel.
Best I could find. Pretty shocking how little £315,000 will get you.

Upper ground floor?
In other words it's got a car park underneath it so it's only the car park that floods rather than the flat.
One bed flat for 310k. Probably the only one at that price point round here worth looking at. Service charge is quite spicy!
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/139213886#/?channel=RES_BUY
Only 75% of the size of @funkmasterp's mansion, but it does have real grass and a car charging point. Not much riding nearby but not far from some bridleways, the canal towpath, and @kayak23's favourite bridge.
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/139702040#/?channel=RES_BUY
I used my Mum's address in SE London. Unsurprisingly, £325,000 will only just stretch to a 1-bed studio apartment somewhere out the arse end of Peckham... 😳
Quick search gave me this..needs a bit of modernising in places, but not too shabby...

That’ll get you a 4 bed detached with garage and garden around here.
Aye. But Falkirk.
😉
It's Doncaster, take your pick! Here's one from one of the villages around.

I'm struggling to find anything I'd actually want to live in! Loads around me for that sort of money but very uninspiring estate boxes!
As I’m antisocial and prefer isolation I’d have this cottage 25 miles away up at Clatteringshaws nr New Galloway
Although it’s never it’s gonna happen as I’ve lived in the same council/now HA bungalow in kirkcudbright for 30yrs, I dunno how folk can afford to buy on a normal wage, even when I was working there was no way I could afford to buy
Basically the same as the house that prompted this thread:
https://www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/65495009/
(Nothing else really around that price point in Dunblane, it is either much smaller and £100k less or over budget or two terraces at the end of our road with outrageous monthly maintenance fees so they keep falling through).
Think this is about as good as you'll get round here, close to the (currently shut) Aston Hill and Wendover Woods
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/137779973#/?channel=RES_BUY
This is less than 5 miles away from me in wales
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/86674698
3 bed semi new build
But as I’m antisocial and prefer isolation I’d have this cottage 25 miles away up at Clatteringshaws nr New Galloway
I always thought that place would be idea for a campsite....
Within 5 mins ride of Pitfichie trails (used for SDA, SES and various other races over the years)
https://www.aspc.co.uk/search/property/420462/Bents-Farmhouse/Alford/
4 bedrooms, looks in a good state, decent garden.
I always thought that place would be idea for a campsite….
Midge’s though, and anyway……what’s the point of isolation if you fill it up with noisy, messy folk 😉
Some minor (yikes) updating required. The only other option less than 325 needs you to build the house first.
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/143040473
Edit, oops 4 bed filter was on
Glossop, this'd do okay. Peak Park on the doorstep. Good road riding. And 30 minutes or so into Manchester Piccadilly by train:

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/140940839#/
And yes I know it's £10K over, I can't be arsed with scrolling though Right Move interminably.
Job done, half-way between the Inners and the Golfie trails:
Or a bit more left-field, a spit from the Gala Hill & Ladhope trails:
6 bed... with garderners cottage

100 metres from us, £65k under budget (they will accept £250k, maybe less).

2 doors up from us, a nice 3 bed at £150k.

Need an extra £65k but you do get 2 bedrooms.

3 bed, detached, garage, gardens, access riding from the door North pennines, 25 minutes to Keswick
Lovely historic village.
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/142840994#/?channel=RES_BUY
And well under budget at £285k
This is what I found in Bristol - https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/142882172#/?channel=RES_BUY - but is in quite a disadvantaged estate. Limiting the search area to a mile from my house came up with a big fat zero.
6 bed… with garderners cottage

Plus 15k left over…
It's good that the servants would have somewhere to live too. Often overlooked, that one.
It's been a while since I looked around south Pembs...you don't get as much as you used to. I'm sure with a bit of patience something older and nicer could be available.
Found a nice secluded cottage for £310k, I’d happily live here
Or this House in the same area as above for less than £300k , I l did all the damp proof work and new joists/floors in this house 20 odd years ago .
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/141010220
Quite a sweet little cottage just around the corner from me. Two nice pubs on doorstep and at the foot of the Downs.
Shocking thing is that was more like £100-120k when I moved down here twenty odd years ago.
I mean, it's a bit further than five miles from my house, but just as a demonstration that the UK property market is insane...

Summary
Charming Detached House situated within its own grounds comprising of two fields, stable block, swimming pool, pond and a stream. The house also has a undeveloped Gite which could be used to extend the house or perhaps as a separate dwelling for family and friends etc The Gardens have numerous fruit trees such as cherry, apple, pears and hazle nuts etc There is a vegetable garden, borders with plants and large lawned gardens with Weeping willow trees
Me and the willow trees both...
but is in quite a disadvantaged estate.
Fishponds is hipster now! fancy bars and cafes now
That French one is fab!
A bit of a business already up and running...although it is about 8 miles from me (don't have the +/- 5 mile filter on 'forrin' property

This is probably the best within 10km of me for something that is actually currently built (plots with brand new houses built to measure are also available) for an equivalent amount of €. https://www.leboncoin.fr/offre/ventes_immobilieres/2422639253
Can’t find anything round me that I would want to live in or would recommend. Just wall to wall blandness of estate houses of different eras with the newer ones being at the cheaper end of the spectrum
Threlkeld, 3 bed, 5 miles from Keswick but you’d have to gazump as currently SSTC.
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/139703528#/?channel=RES_BUY
House prices near near me are ridiculous.
Nearest 315k house is 6miles away, 2bed modern semi with tiny garden. Nearest house id consider is this, which needs some work
^^^ Probs needs another £100k spending on it too!
Nice retirement 'lodge', err sorry I mean glorified caravan. This developement finished just as interest rates rocketed, oops.
It seems like anything close to a motorway & train station & amenities, whilst also being far enough away to be peaceful, for reasonable money is a tall order.
Location, location, location, as they say.
Lots of recent new builds near me. Just over £300k gets you a good selection of 4 bed detached houses
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/140567063#/?channel=RES_BUY
Do you like grey?
Do you like grey?
All these new builds with packed together indentikit houses remind me of factory farming for some reason, I see them being built around Dumfries and the thought of living on such an estate with your allocated 10m2 of fenced in garden is dystopian in nature.
Best? £315k doesn't get you a lot round here unless you want to live on a main road
This is right opposite the start ramp at Farmer Johns, but it's on a main road
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/142284749#/?channel=RES_BUY
This is reasonable actually
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/142835216#/?channel=RES_BUY
Would love this!
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/142448102#/?channel=RES_BUY
Bargain at 1.2 mil, the Southdown's way goes right past the house's front gate and then climbs up by the side of the house
Not far from QECP, Harting Down, Kingley Vale and surrounded by countryside and only a few nearby neighbours and a private school (Ditcham Park) at the very top of the hill
I could buy 3 of my houses for that!
Absolutely **** all near us which corresponds with the fact that it took us 14 months to find our place!
All these new builds with packed together indentikit houses remind me of factory farming for some reason
Some are better than others, a lot of it depends on the builder / developer. When I moved to the area I'm in now there was one new build estate and some fields. The two new build estates that followed were aiming for the higher end of the market. So the houses have bigger plots, have a good mix of different designs and materials. The street layouts are better and make better use of things like little wooded areas and streams and they left green space all around them.
Following that there was a house building orgy and the packed together, identikit, white roughcast homes are what went up. Complete with narrower roads and limited greenspace.
city centre - comes complete with ample opportunity for picking up junky poo

This is across the road from me. Unfortunately its a retirement development so I'm not eligible yet!
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/141737846#/?channel=RES_BUY
I'll change the direction of this thread as £315,000 just seems to buy a bland box or nowt at all (unless in Scotland!).
THE GRANDEST/GROSSEST HOUSE WITHIN 5 MILES OF WHERE YOU LIVE... 🙂
I'll start with...
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/86651301#/?channel=RES_BUY
I could buy 3 of my houses for that!
I could buy 10 of mine!
This bland a F box comes in @ £4mill
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/142900289#/?channel=RES_BUY
However, this underground one is much more interesting @ £3.5mil

Must be quiet atm as those an nothing compared to some of the places I ride past.
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/86673555#/?channel=RES_BUY house and chinese takeaway! :sunglasses:
Ooooft, not for me: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/86297106

I'd much rather have this for half the price: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/125637230

Right then...
This looks like a small bungalow from the road, but, well, isn't...
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/133522691#/?channel=RES_BUY
And this is very close to me, is in the most ridiculously amazing spot, and I would buy it if I had the cash, but it needs at least £500k spending on it cos it's f__d
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/137022959#/?channel=RES_BUY
And in a straight up "well, that's not too shabby is it" stylee

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/141234116#/?channel=RES_BUY
I'm going with this one, just a touch over-budget, but with plenty of bike storage.
