You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I use Freegle quite a bit (both gifting and getting) and in the past I have 'won' some decent things (an almost used Scalextric set and a bench vice being the most notable items) but at the weekend I collected a long reach petrol chainsaw hedge trimmer – completely unused (never even had fuel or chainsaw oil in it)!
So – what are your best 'wins'?
Freecycle? Jesus I listed sone old windows once, mentioning you couldn't just fit them without a builder, and had numerous house wifes telling me they wanted them. They really had little/no value, but I didn't want some poor husband to be tasked with fitting window that didn't fit his house, they went to some bloke making a shed for his disabled son.
Otherise there seemed to be professional "pickers" who watched it for business opportunities (sell it on ebay) & had anything of any use, before anyone else contacted them
Has it changed?
We used to use it loads, although we now get rid of stuff via Facebook marketplace, but advertise it for £5 or something nominal and then refuse payment. It cuts out all the people looking for car boot stuff and with saved searches for anything free that they won't show up to collect. £5 is enough to make sure they actually want it before calling dibs, but not enough to put off someone struggling who might need it.
Bosch Garden shredder, saved us spending £80 to realize that spinning disk shredders are basically useless and we then bought a MacAlister one that's 100x quicker (not kidding) and doesn't jam.
A whole job lot of about 20 brewing demijohns and 70's homebrew books.
Loads of furniture when we moved house, mostly that's been given away again.
The odd bit of cycling gear. Some old SPD shoes that survived a few more years commuting, stuff like that.
Loads of stuff. Biggest win was probably the cladding for my shed. I built the frame and roof not really having a plan for the walls, and then Freecycle showed up at the right time with a lady who was ripping all the pine cladding out of a 1930s flat on the other side of town. I crammed easily a skip's worth into and onto my Berlingo, and had just enough intact bits to do the 42 linear ft of wall/doors, using the less intact stuff for the back, with enough short leftovers to do the storage bench, and about 17 winters of kindling.

Think my solid 70s sewing machine was off Freecycle - still going strong. As is the little Technics amp I use with my turntable.
Given loads of stuff away too - can rarely be arsed to look for stuff to collect these days. Just last week a guy from round the corner picked up an old drill of mine with a fairly knackered battery, to replace his identical one which was on the blink, but had a good battery.

Yeah I often find that much of the stuff is absolute tat that people just can't be bothered taking to the recycling centre, but glad I looked on Saturday 🙂
I’ve given loads of stuff away. No longer needed or wanted but too good to throw away.
You get to meet lots of “interesting” people too.
We got a nice recliner chair of the local facebook free group recently. Great condition, 2 others had already turned up but couldn't get it in their cars (it was quite big). 7 seater soon swallowed it and it was all mine!
I give away loads as well, but have blocked one bloke. He's like a vulture just asking for anything and then being a real pain in the arse about picking it up and expecting you to hold on to it for ages. Before I blocked him I ended up just binning one of the things (car paint chip kit) and telling him to do one.
Managed to get a few paving slabs for odd bits like shed base and rabbit run. Can only take about 6 at a time though so needed a few return trips.
I didn't realise this was still a thing. I took a look locally and it's all utter rubbish.
I used to Freeycle quite a lot a few years ago but the number of times folks would fail to turn up or turn up in a tiny car, see my van and then expect me to deliver the free thing for free pissed me off.

Yeah there's one guy in my local group that's like that too - pretty much anything I list, he'll ask for it. He'll then often go radio silent (I assume this is because he asks straight away, then takes a look on Ebay to see what it will sell for before deciding if it is worth his while).
Anything I want to give away I just leave at the end of the drive with a 'Free, please take' notice on.
That way I...
a) don't have to deal with twonks
b) don't have to take it to the tip
Most stuff goes within a few hours.
I don't care if people want to sell it on. I basically have the stance if I can't be bothered to sell it then so what.
I want a fruit machine now 🤣
Years ago a girlfriend's dad had one and all the local kids used to go to their house to play on it. He must have made a decent chunk of money with his highly illegal enterprise 🙂
they are a licence to print money, the machine I've got you can set the win percentage (and obviously by extension the profit margin) anywhere from 99% down to 80%. Total racket as there's no way the house can lose. Fascinating machine though, really clever the way it all works and from an engineering POV, the build quality is phenomenal, these things are made to take abuse but keep on earning money 💰He must have made a decent chunk of money with his highly illegal enterprise
It's great fun playing until you win the jackpot (even though it's my own money!) as the machine goes crazy with lights & sounds when you do 😂 Would recommend. 😃
