I’m looking for a good free photo editor for windows 11, one that does the basics like crop, rotate, sharpen, light and colour tweaks etc. would be a bonus if it would batch edit a few photos that need similar adjustments if that is possible. What would you suggest please? The standard windows offering is ok but doesn’t offer any sharpening tool. I mainly work in jpeg but raw processing would be a possibility if it was available
Darktable?
Is there a free version of gimp these days?
I've just started trying/using Photopad (Free version). So far I'm very pleased. It still isn't entirely clear to me whether this free version is time capped but it's working so far.
I like paint.net although I don't think it'll do the batch updates you mention
Obviously the complete opposite of what was asked, but this is STW... 😂
Assuming this is for serious-ish hobby use, you should definitely check out Photoshop/Literoom, especially if you do any (or have any interest in getting into) photo editing/manipulation. It's only a tenner a month and so far ahead of the game now compared to free & even other paid tools it's ridiculous!

Same.
I never got on with GIMP, I know it's well regarded and I haven't looked at it in a while but it felt klunky in its Windows incarnation. Paint.NET was far more intuitive to me.
Picasa
Gimp
Inkscape for the vectors.
LibraDraw very good for importing weird file formats, such CMX and CDR

lol, it's pretty clunky even in it's original Linux incarnation.
Since they've switched to single window mode by default, it's a lot more usable than it was however.
It still will drive anyone used to Photoshop absolutely crackers though. Not to mention the non-native open/close dialogs etc.

The reverse is true also. I started using PS a few months ago. The Gimp's navigation thumbnail in the corner for panning around the image without using scrollbars is far more intuitive than scrollbars. It drove me mad trying to figure out how to crop a layer rather than the entire image. The "transform selection" function is also quite clunky rather than in the Gimp where you can do that as standard to a selection. Only being able to drag to rearange layer order in PS and not having arrows to quickly adjust where the layer sits in order.
However, the object selection stuff in PS (when it works), content aware fill, and now AI generative functions are awesome!
one that does the basics like crop, rotate, sharpen, light and colour tweaks etc
The Gimp does all that. Although in PS these are performed as non destructive layers (which can also have layer masks applied to) whereas in the Gimp they're destructive operations.
Have a look at Pixlr. Browser-based and free. Has a batch editing tool now too.
Just downloaded photo pad to try but a lot of the useful features are on the paid version, retouch, batch edit etc.
Gimp looks more promising, just got to figure out how to work it efficiently!

I'm currently running the free version and I can use (and save) the Retouch Tools... I haven't tried Batch.
Edit.... just tried Batch as an experiment.... it worked perfectly

Another edit of my edit. After having tried these once it now says I can only get them with the professional version. So my success with them was just a taster, although it looks like some retouch feature are still available to me. Actually for $39.99 I'll probably get the professional version, I rather like it.
