Just seen the trailer for Spotlight:
and it got me to thinking, what are your recommendations for best films based on a true story?
Sound of music .
All the Presidents Men
Apollo 13
U571
Life of Brian
Death Race 2000
Every day's a school day
I never knew Sound of Music had even the remotest connection to reality...
Debbie does Dallas.
A beautiful mind
The intouchables
Changeling
Midnight Express
Touching the void - one of the few occasions that a film > book
Midnight Express +1 .
Fargo... 🙂
Ah yes the intouchables was fantastic
Deep throat? No?
Goodfellas. Obviously.
Rush
And Star Wars
Machine Gun Preacher
Cry freedom.
Come on the right stuff is literally out of this world, mostly true.
Schindlers List
Chatty chitty gang bang
Forrest Hump
Natural born drillers
Pump friction

Pump friction
Shaving Ryan's Privates
Munich
Good topic. The answer has got to be Goodfellas. It's an immense film. But there are so many great films based on or inspired by real events. Where to start...
Midnight Express is a great film but apparently takes massive liberties with the actual events?
Raging Bull. Papillon. Badlands. Salvador. Platoon. Mississippi Burning. Zodiac was very good. I feel like i'm forgetting something really obvious. Citizen X was good too.
Max Manus
Walk the line.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly was well done.
ET
The Right Stuff. Even if you just watch the last scene.
Driving miss daisy
Robocop. ok it's a true story that's yet to happen, but so is Predator and that's pretty awesome too.
Max Manus
I keep forgetting I worked on that - must get round to seeing it
Judge Dredd
Ghandi
Apollo 13
All The Presidents Men
Bridge Too Far
The World's Fastest Indian is a good one.
Chopper
Into the wild is worth a watch. Has a pretty cool sound track written by Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam)
was that the one that was based on the story of the capture of the Enigma machine during WW2, at which point all reality was suspended?U571
The Enigma machine had already been deciphered months before the US entered the war, U571 was never captured, etc, etc
Anyway, my vote is The Final Countdown, where the nuclear-powered USS Nimitz travels through a timewarp to tackle the Japanese who are about to attack Pearl Harbour. F14 aircraft taking on prop fighters, seriously great for aircraft buffs
That was the point in picking U571 timba, Hollywood takes massive liberties with the phrase based on a true story. 😉
127 hours
Flame and citron
When We Were Kings
Downfall
+1s for Into the Wild, When We Were Kings, Chopper.
Walk the line
Black Hawk Down
Not necessarily the best as such, but powerful and unbelievable was Changeling
We just watched Lawless, which we enjoyed.
Not top of the list though.
Sharknado 2
Machete
Rush
Apollo 13
The Battle of Britain
Cool Runnings
Not Without My Anus
Argo
And to anyone who disagrees - Argo **** yourself
And Withnail and I. It's sort of a true story.
apocolypse now.

great story; crap film. imo.
Has no one seen Pride yet? Highly recommended if you haven't. Metropolitan gay activists meet striking coal miners in South Wales, with predictably hilarious results. Rather moving.
Sort of based on true events, but not a specifically true story in itself, but for anyone who foolishly assumes that a three hour musical about the struggles of poor Jewish farmers in the Russian empire, fighting the threats to their way of life from state sponsored persecution and inter-generational conflict, won't be fertile ground for comedy, I heartily recommend Fiddler on the Roof.
Nude Nuns with Big Guns.
A sensitive, thought provoking look at the often violent consequences of Nun abuse.
The matrix.
Minions
Sort of based on true events, but not a specifically true story in itself
This is by far the best way to go.
In that vein, probably Margin Call.
Lone Survivor is an amazing example of a rather dull "based on true events" film to my mind. The true events are that four bearded men have a very long gunfight in a forest. It almost literally consists of 2 hours of a bearded man kneeling behind a tree firing a rifle. After a while, you wish the filmmakers had taken some more liberties with the source material - introduced a love interest, a talking pig or some sort of sinister conspiracy involving a biotech company harvesting human organs to make irresistible salad dressings. Anything except some more shooting at things in a wood, really.
😉
conan the barbarian
terminator
gladiator
bedknobs and broomsticks
American Gangster or Catch Me If You Can for me.
The Killing Fields
Lone Survivor
You forgot about them repeatedly throwing themselves off the sides of hills with often [s]hilarious[/s] painful results. Kind of like what we used to do as kids, but with more beard.
Argo +1

I really struggled with Lone Survivor - Talibani get shot, virtually explodes - SEAL get shot, quick grunt and he's okay - in fact, shot 5-6 times, rolls down a cliff and it only takes a quick quote from an Motivation Poster and they're back in the game, well, until they find themselves in an unfortunately cinematic spot when they finally die.
Wolf Creek
Can't believe The Great Escape hasn't been mentioned yet
Also Bridge on the River Kwai needs to go on the list.
...and Iron Skies 😉

Very loosely based....
Th expendables 1 then 2 then 3.
Apparently this is loosely based on a true story:
Chatty chitty gang bang
Forrest Hump
Natural born drillers
Pump friction
Shaving Ryan's Privates
Penetrator 2: budgment day
Intheanus Jones and the temple of Poon
+1 for All The President's Men
What a film
Lebanon.
Midnight express +2
The iceman . We all love a serial killer don't we .
Don't we ?
Bridge on the River Kwai is a work of fiction.
