Is there anything that has improved your elder dog's mobility?

Usually metacam is the default option, I believe Meloxidyl is the same stuff but cheaper, can (both) have side affect as it includes steroids. Lots of more natural stuff to try too like fish oil..
We used it with our previous elderly dog, and didn't see a downside

We are limited due to our dogs other medical needs as he has steroids too. Have found You Move joint supplements have worked well with our boxer.

Previcox for our Springer x Lab. He didn’t tolerate Metacam. He is also on Tramadol but then he’s got quite bad arthritis as well as collapsed discs. The combo keeps him active and seemingly pain free.

Metacam as a pain killer and dasaquin as a joint supplement

doesn't stop the idiot throwing himself out the car like a puppy because he realised it’s his first river outing this year and now he’s pegleg.

Turmeric and black pepper. It's a fantastic natural anti inflammatory. We gave it to our last dog to ease his arthritis which is did. However, it looks like it might have bought him some extra time from the brain tumour that finally got him.

Worth doing a bit if research and starting off very small and building up as it can cause an upset stomach if you give too much too soon.

If you have your dog insured see if your vet will refer you to a hydrotherapist. My Pointer was arthritic in his back end and the swimming really helped him.

My 14 1/2 yo staffy was on occasional metacam/loxicom, but kidney damage meant that wasnt possible. Tried pardale, which didnt really work. Youmove glucosimine tablets help. Put her on Tramadol for 3 months which really helped but she became very dopey and severly lost her appetite. Now off the Tramadol and back to her old self and regaining weight. Going to try Turmeric next, as heard great things, but need to research how to administer

I changed my dogs diet over to Skinner's working dog with Joint aid built in. I'd been buying the joint aid separately and adding it to his food, but this way works out cheaper. I buy it cheap and get it delivered by Ocado their pet delivery bit anyway.

https://fetch.co.uk/search?entry=Skinner%27s+with+joint+aid

Still have to use Metacam when he's really stiff, but only normally after hard excercise.

Advanced Joint Support works well on our elderly basset hound - we tried him on Meloxide but it caused a stomach reaction which resulted in bloat and a emergency visit to the vet hospital which cost £1500.

This is a repeat from my previous post about Metacam.

When my 15yr cat started to have difficulties with her rear legs, the vet prescribed metacam, after a week and a bit she went off her food I dosed her from the syringe, rather than add it to her food as my other cat shared shared the food bowls. It would seem from other websites such as ‘metacam killed my dog/cat’ that stomach ulcers are a problem, possibly from not mixing with food. I stopped the metacam and it would appear that muscle weakness was the problem. She lived another six years. Our old Lab had joint problems (no metacam), but it was kidney failure at 13 that got him.

My advice as as a dog/cat owner, NOT a Vet, is to use the metacam and keep a VERY close eye on the appetite and weight.

There can be problematic interactions with metacam and other drugs. Make sure the vet knows everything they're already on and it needs to be monitored.

Worked really well with our 15 year old  Labradoodle. Definitely have seen an improvement.

Also goes swimming once a week. Helps a lot I think.

+1 turmeric (mixed with oil, eg almond or Yumega, and his biscuits).

Our vet said a few weeks ago that turmeric is proven to aid arthritis etc and there was no need for us to buy expensive supplements from him.

13yr old Spaniel advocates the above.

YouMove pills and a grain free diet really helped the late, great Nelson's arthritic joints.

We give our 10yr old Ridgeback glucosamine and cod liver oil tablets from Holland and Barret. We also feed both our boys a raw diet. Our “old man” is still fit as a fiddle, quite happy to do a 3-4hr walk up in the Lake District. Although admittedly I don’t take him out MTBing now (much to his disgust) Tumaric and black pepper is also a great shout.
