You've read wrong.

That
He's right, you know. Don't be a dolt and listen to him!
first few links I've read on google have said that it isn't - why do you say its fine?
Genuine question, as I'm using it at the moment. If it is good I dont want to install more software.
Using chrome as a browser
Microsoft Security Essentials - "The thing to use unless you're surfing the darker reefs of the one handed web"™
Nope no dodgy sites visited or clicking on links in random emails. I'll see how I go with microsoft. Thanks

why Ive used it for years and remained infection free? On up grading to Win 8.1 I decided like you I would use Widows security. After clicking accidentally a bad link I was infected with malware etc. That was only a quick google search to re install Fire fox on a new computer. I clicked the wrong site. Went back to mcafee. What I like is the great big screen that says in big red letters 'we tested the site and its maybe infected'. I didnt see MS stuff give me a second chance.
I'm no expert but the anti virus software guys spend all their time making bespoke software to help combat attacks on computers. Where as MS Windows has a rather lack lustre record of making some poor OS software.

and also happens to be what they sell...
But, FWIW I (and the family) have used Norton for years on various OS's - we've never had a problem. Cheap peace of mind.
Microsoft Security Essentials is highly regarded as "the" free anti-virus to use.
Microsoft has actually managed to pull together a great, low resource product which comes out on top of all free virus tests, and beats most of the paid for ones also.

Windows defender/windows security isn't the same as Security Essentials. (... i think. At least defender isnt.) MSE is a stand alone product from windows.

That doesn't matter because dodgy ad servers and various other sources can still serve up shite.

Switch sort to 'by value'. The dotted line on the graph represents the standard Windows 8 defender. For example Trend Micro deals with 99.7% compared with Microsoft's 84%.
I personally stick with Microsoft's one and back up important stuff to a cloud storage thingy.
If I were to buy one, it would be BitDefender, as it offers very nearly the best protection and performance is very good. 🙂
reading here says windows defender replaces MSE for 8.1

I chose to remove mcafee as it was slowing the laptop down massively and causing things like chrome not to respond. All the popups also annoyed me quite alot.
There isn't anything important on this machine, but it is used for banking and the like.
AVG free has works well for many years on my windows machines.
it is used for banking and the like
If your bank provides something then there's a tenuous argument in favour of using that - I think Barclays will still give you a free copy of Kaspersky, for example, and Santander and others expect you to use Trusteer as well as your AV. But personally I'm quite happy with MSE and always recommend that to others.

Still using Windows Me? Time to upgrade.

Don't get confused here, MS have reused the "Defender" moniker. It's a wholly different beast these days.
For W7, you need to download the standalone MSE. For W8, stick with the included Defender.
first few links I've read on google have said that it isn't - why do you say its fine?
Because it is. Do you want an AV solution which will stop most threats, or do you want one which will thrash the hell out of your machine in order to look good in tests?

all the more reason to secure your laptop. Maybe all you need to do is configure macfee.

using 8.1 and as we know we will have a free upgrade to Win 10 because its so good 😀
One other point is to make sure you update Windows regularly to get the free security patches etc
