My son was playing football at a not to be named premier league club the other day.
I turned up in my £60 decathlon coat and £25 craghopper trousers.
Some parents were wearing some pretty expensive gear, but one bloke stood out from the other parents, perhaps for the wrong reasons

I know each to their own and all that but really, and no they were not an ex professional.
My fashion sense must not be there, but he didn’t half stand out. I’d never seen such ridiculous trainers so googled them to find they are £1k , then googled the jacket. He just looked a bit of a tit quite frankly.

Honestly, for me at least, not really, I think it only looks stand out when people take it the same level you would see on a Cat Walk at a fashion show.
Even then, its usually meh, and the given example by the OP only gets one eyebrow raised ever so briefly.

A friend’s son is big on the fashion trainers, balenciaga (sp?), limited addition Nikes. He has them in display cases in his room and makes money selling them on. Each to his own. How he would never wear them where they might get dirty so I suspect the guy in the OP is indeed a drug dealer.

£6k isn’t that expensive these days. It certainly doesn’t buy something flash.
It certainly brings things into perspective. I’m in the top 5% of uk earners, and for a recent anniversary trip to Venice, splashed out on a nice new cashmere polo for dinner - that was £75 and I think reasonably tasteful. As opposed to. £6k and 🤢

I can't get my head around how ugly Balenciaga trainers are. They look like Chinese trainer brands - Peak, Anta, Li-Ning, 361 - and yes, there's a reason why you haven't heard of any of them...
Just wait until you turn up at an MtB race. £5k bikes for all the kids, £5k bikes for dad, £50k lowered T6.1 with 'style' added, all kitted in Fox with wide brimmed trucker caps....

Actually I think it was more of a 'northern' thing in general as in NE & NW England we also had 'casuals' with Pringle and Farah clothing in the 80s.
The most expensive 'clothing' I buy is my shoes, in the sales, as Salomon seem fit my awkward big feet better than anything else, so we're talking £70-£100. The last t-shirt I bought was £8 😂

Its most definitely a northern thing. It was the scousers that started it when the travelling Liverpool fans in Europe would 'liberate' Sergio Tachini, Fila, Kappa, Ellesse and Diadora (which were all brands that you couldn't really buy much of in the UK at the time) from sports shops on the continent.
It soon spread around the rest of the North, with shops like Wade Smith hiring vans, driving to Europe and buying up loads of the stuff then returning back to Liverpool and Manchester to sell it at a massive profit. The London thing was a bit different, with different brands.
I used to do the design work for the a company in Manchester who would hire a lorry, go directly to Adidas in Germany to buy trainers you couldn't officially get in the UK. He made a fortune! He'd bring a truckload back and he'd be sold out in a couple of days and heading back to Germany
Theres a good documentary about it called 'Casuals' on Netflix. People are disdainful and snotty about the whole terrace fashion thing, but the whole casual culture influenced fashion worldwide, still does and has totally transformed the market for sportswear. Imagine this: When Borg and McEnroe contested the Wimbledon final they both did so while wearing sportswear that wasn't officially imported into the UK at the time. Difficult to believe nowadays.
Whatever I was wearing yesterday plus a coat suitable for the weather and a pair of claret and blue trainers comfortable for the 1 mile walk from the pub to Villa Park and the 2 hours standing in the Holte End. Yes I know we're supposed to be sitting down but the only time I've seen anyone seated this season was when we were beating Brighton 6-1 and people were getting a bit bored.

80's casual fashion was great in the NW. The joy of coming home from France with a bag full of Lacoste and Pierre Cardin clothes that no one else had. Same in the early 90's coming home from surfing/working in America with lots of clothes no one could get at home. Some people like clothes and spend money on them, others go out the house in Craghoppers 🙂

Nah, it's nothing to do with have nice clothes - they're just copying what some pro footballer has been seen wearing on social media. "Ooh look at me! I can buy the same stuff as ..insert pro footballer's name.. am as loaded as they are, me!" But mostly LOOK AT ME!
Unless you make you're own clothes we all copy someone. His choice has worked beyond his wildest dreams as you're not only looking but talking about him. Good lad he's a fashion success.

£6k is bloody expensive. There are plenty of bikes available that aren’t cheap and badly made for a lot less than £6k. Just as there are clothes available (probably better quality) than the ones outlined in the OP.

And while I wouldn't buy them (or a knock-off) there is something strangely awesome about those trainers.

You've just squared a circle for me. I was in JD sports yesterday in Birkenhead (cos, like, innit bruv) looking for a padded jacket for #1.
All the men's jackets on the sale rail were 100-175 quid. All of them. They didn't have any jackets sub 90 quid. And this in an area that is pretty bleak, and the black padded jacket is de rigeur for the local mugging yoofs.
We got one for 40 quid from Go Outdoors shortly afterwards. Thank goodness for kids who don't go for brands!

I’m not arguing that £6k isn’t a lot of money. It is. But it doesn’t buy you anywhere near a top of the range bike these days. It buys you a decent bike with decent components from a decent manufacturer, certainly not anything pointlessly flash like the clothes that were illustrated.
But the point is those clothes aren’t really flash. They’re just ****ing terrible and not that well put together. The very definition of style over substance. There’s a sensible middle ground of quality versus price. The OP and £6k for a bike aren’t it. You can get a decent bike with decent components for less than £6k!
