Looking for a wireless over ear set of headphones for use with phone when travelling and with TV at home when everyone is in bed. Need ANC and be sub £100

The Anker Q30 seems to get good reviews? anyone tried it?  Is there something better. Please don't recommend buds as I can't put anything in my ears without causing pain.

AKG N60NC are around £100 and are designed around the harmen curve for sound quality, fold up relatively small for travel and decent enough battery life.

I’ve got a pair of Taotronics SoundSurge BT headphones, I bought some Anker ones at the same time, because they were quite highly rated, and sent those back. They were £55, they’re comfy, look like the fancy Sony ‘phones, they have fairly effective ANC, and they have one advantage over very much more expensive ANC BT ‘phones like B&W and Apple, in that they can be used with a cable - they come with a 3.5mm > 3.5mm, but I found a nice 3.5mm > Lightning cable with braided outer for about £11 online, which is really useful if the battery dies, although you don’t get ANC, for obvious reasons. The Apple and B&W ‘phones, despite having a cable facility, don’t work with a cable if the battery goes!
Which, frankly, is bloody stupid! The top-end Sonys do, though I haven’t got £300-odd to spare.

Cex have some sony wh-1000xm3 for £100. Grade c and 24 month warranty. No idea what grade c is though. You can pay slightly more for a better grade

Or if you can stretch to it Amazon have renewed for £170.

Do they not? I thought it was just the ANC that was disabled, as the cable provides sufficient signal to drive the actual speaker units?

Ah; it seems the Apple headphones only have a Lightning connector, not 3.5mm jack. My B+O headphones have a 3.5mm jack, so work fine without using any power.

Anyway; those are all pretty expensive headphones, not what the OP asked for...

I have a pair of the Q20s which are reasonable for the money. Not Sennheiser/Sony/Bose quality ANC but decent enough.

I bought a pair of Sony WH-XB900N last year and have been pretty impressed with them. As is traditional on here they are normally quite a bit over your stated £100 budget but Amazon do have some up for sale at £129:

I use Anker Q20s occasionally for flying / train etc and they are good enough for me. The ANC is pretty decent and makes the difference on the tube or a long flight.

Sound is just OK, but they have a decent wireless BT range and a cable if battery goes south. Although battery life is very good indeed.

If the Q30s are about £45 then I’d not hesitate. If they are £55, then take a look at some of the other options above (like the Tao maybe).

PS I see that the new Google phone comes with some ‘free’ Bose 700 ‘phones worth £350. You just need to spend £849 on the phone 🙂

Audio Technica...?

I've used a few of their other headphones and earbuds, always been very impressed with the performance/price ratio.

Always been impressed by Audio Technica stuff. Service is great too, the pads of my last pair split after many years of use. I asked if they sold replacements, they apologised and sent me new ones for free.

These might be just what you need.

My wife has tasked me with getting some noise cancelling headphones for her Christmas. Do these work with people noise as well against droning out machine noise?

My wife's office is very noisy - a room off a school's senior year common room sort of noisy. She wants to be able to get some piece when she's trying to get her marking done and her current headphones aren't giving her the respite she needs.

Thanks

Question for CZ, does the sound quality improve with the cable in? I bought my Mrs some Bose ones but am convinced my cabled brass Sony £35 ones (frequently mentioned on here) sound better. My hearing's not getting any better so these are crucial considerations for one who likes a bit of loud music.

Keep an eye on eBay. Recent Google promotion means that in the next month it'll be flooded with unused Bose 700s.

I bought my daughter some anker q35s. She likes them and I think uses them in a noisy office. Better via Bluetooth as then the app can tame the bass
