My wife is in need of a new phone and is thinking of getting some sort of smart phone. She won't spend a penny more than £20 a month on contract so iPhones are out! Blackberrys are also out as she currently has one of those and doesn't like it.

I'm an iPhone chap myself and know very little about android or windows phones - so all recommendations welcome!

Mrs C. has an HTC Explorer and loves it. Very good little phone that does what it does very well.

£20 is hardly "budget" to be honest, you can get a smartphone for £7.50 a month. £20 should get you something reasonable like an HTC One S

Gotta HTC desire S for £12.50 last year on vodaphone

I'm happy with it, but my needs are pretty basic.

I got a Samsung Galaxy Y for my first smart phone and it does all the things I need (Endomondo etc).
I got it from the Carphone Warehouse for £15/month including 750 MB, unlimited texts and 50 minutes free calls - it also came with a free 32" Toshiba Flatscreen (not the highest end but we're happy with it). If you don't need another telly they also do free netbook or games consoles deals.

Pretty pleased with my Galaxy W. My mates just got the Ace 2 or something like that and it seems better, though. And a bit cheaper.

Very happy with my Samsung Galaxy Ace; free with £7.50 per month contract from Carphone Warehouse. 250 mins calls, unlimited texts and 500mb data. There may be 'better' phones out there, but I'm very impressed with it as it does all sorts of amazing things.

thats exactly what i did, firstly with an HTC desire but due to its limited internal memory now on a very nice Samsung Galaxy S (GT i9000)Paid just under £100 for it a few weeks back, off Ebay.

Tesco sim only deal £12.50 a month for 750 minutes talk time and 500MB of data.
