Our two girls (5 and 3, unusual names but we like them) are back in school / nursery from Tuesday so we thought we’d have a day out at the beach tomorrow.

Any recommendations?

If there’s a little hidden treasure we may well tie that in with a trip to one of the bigger towns as fish and chips will be mandatory.

TIA 👍🏼

Saltburn. Huge, lovely beach, pier with nice little amusements on it for the kids, good fish and chips, nice town at the top of the cliff, valley gardens for a walk with playgrounds. I think you'd struggle to beat it as an all-round seaside resort.

Any of the beaches from the mouth of the Tees to Whitby are cracking tbh - the towns/villages attached to them vary in quality though!

Not Scarborough. Really busy. Filey is great miles of beach to spread out on. Browns for fish and chips.

Hornsea is worth a look if you are further south. Miles of beaches and some of the best fish and chips on the east coast at Whiteheads chippy

Cayton bay is nice, unspoilt, no amusements etc

Agree on Cayton Bay - nowhere near any shops etc though so be prepared with all you need for the day. Take crabbing nets (and bacon for bait) if the tide is out as the rock pools are usually quite good.

Hunmanby Gap (south of Filey) is nice too (but can have lots of dogs) but the little cafe there still charges 1980s prices for lovely bacon butties etc.

If you want to be near a town I’d personally go to Whitby or for a smaller town, Saltburn (I know it’s not quite Yorkshire).

5 and 3 certainly are unusual names. I’d have gone for 7 personally 😉

The beach at Whitby is ok but there's much better up and down the coast. Nice town though.

Saltburn (I know it’s not quite Yorkshire)

Where is it if it's not Yorkshire?

Sandsend - which is the Northern end of the beach from Whitby.

Came across this compact gem near Addingham the other day.

Well yes I know - that’s why I suggested Whitby if they DID want a town.

Seems I stand corrected about Saltburn though - I thought it was Cleveland, but apparently Cleveland is a parish of North Yorks.

Sandsend – which is the Northern end of the beach from Whitby

This - plus it's a nice little village.

Or Runswick Bay, a bit further north still.

Saltburn (I know it’s not quite Yorkshire).

Saltburn is in the unitary authority of Redcar and Cleveland. Hasn't been part of Yorkshire since before most of us were born, only recently had Yorkshire used by the post office who don't understand the last county rearrangement when Cleveland was split up, also old men harking after a glorious past that never was insist it is still Yorkshire. Really part of Teesside.

Beach is nice.

Runswick is great but recently got declared UK beach of the year so that may have knackered it.

Park in the top car park for Runswick and follow the coast path down is the best bet, there is a pushchair route avoiding the steps if needed. Check the tides as there is no beach at high tide (I think Tuesday will be Ok). Beach cafe is open for take outs and the public toilets by the lifeboat station are open so all you need for a good beach day.

Of the "resorts" Filey is our favourite. I really don't like Scarborough, too tacky. Saltburn was a pleasant surprise when a friend of MrsMC relocated back up there.

Think we need to try Sandsend next time we're up there though

The best bit about Saltburn is the amusement arcade - spend a few ££££s but end up with an armful of tokens to exchange for bits n bobs. Still costs ££s but it’s fun and the kids come out with something.

Snob! I liked Scarborough, but I was there in winter so it wasn't busy.

I'm from near Saltburn, just inland , its classed as the start of the North Yorkshire Coast and North Yorkshire as far as I'm concerned 😁.

Skinningrove (used to live there) , Staithes, Runswick, Sandsend, all great spots for the kids. Saltburn does get stupid busy nowadays, but I guess most do and obviously Whitby does.

Scarborough north bay is great. No tacky amusements and nice beach.

Was there on Friday and it was empty. Sea was pancake flat though and I'd taken body boards rather than the paddleboard!!

Sandsend. Get there proper early though as there is limited car parking by the side of the road but thats part of the beauty - it can't get mega busy. Plus short drive into Whitby for fish & chips, close to the Moors if you fancy a change of scenery etc plus if you're coming from the Pickering direction, its a lovely drive over the tops.

IF we're allowing Saltburn, then head a bit further along to Marske or Redcar. Better sand, loads of space and ample parking within very short walk to beach. Got family in Saltburn and even they take the kids to Marske beach. The other hidden gem is Skinningrove.

Runswick bay is quite pretty, but I can never get over the manky sewage overflow you need to walk through at the bottom of the slipway. After heavy rain it's rank. And you always get folk playing in it, digging holes with the kids etc. Oh and there is basically no beach left at high tide, especially with springs.

another vote here for Sandsend - plus the beach runs between there and Whitby so you should (!) be able to find a quieter spot

The answer is Runswick. Access the sands at kettleness if you want really quiet. Bit adventurous. And yes it has been a lot busier since the Times article: https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/heritage-and-retro/heritage/runswick-bay-named-best-beach-britain-times-2923461

The local secret though is the hidden beach at Skinningrove. Or access at hummersea if you want deserted. Exciting steps.

The best laid plans and all that....

3 year old was up half the night the night with a temperature / sore & snotty nose, at one point biting my finger with the ferocity of a pit bull as she really wasn’t keen on the idea of taking calpol.

Thread saved, we’ll definitely be trying out some of these at some point....

Skinningrove? Don't they eat their young there?
Depends on how far you want to go. Wev'e just come back from Hornsea which has a massive, clean uncrowded beach. Saltburn's a fave of ours cos It's not that far & if you go at high water when there's a good sea running you can watch surfers trying to dodge 170gram lead sinkers from the fishermen on the pier. There's always a big queue for the fish & chips at the pier chippy but there's others in town.
(I say 'surfers', most of them just seem to bob around in the hope they'll get swept back in.)

Now there's some hypocrisy! They still think you're posh for having access to cold running water, either from a tap or a stream in North Lincolnshire*

*most lincs would be at great pains to point out its humberside.

No, no it's not 😉

I don't disagree on Hornsea being quite nice it's just that part of the world is all a bit dualing [s] banjos [/s] brass bands isn't it?

Probably not their own. Skinny gets a bad rap. Though asking a surfer who moved there with his ex pole dancer wife whether he’d had any problems, got the reply “nah. But they know I’m a drug dealer from Manchester who’s done time!” So it’s probably okay. Nice beach (not the one you see from the road) but don’t drink the water.

Editing to add: Hornsea - went for a short walk along the cliffs (Cleveland way)with my wife. Lovely day, and a small family group with small kids were picnicking on the sand. On our return they’d lit a fire. A car tyre...

Just South of Hornsea is Mappleton. Nothing more commercialised than a tearoom, but not bad for flat shallow sands.

Thanks to this thread we had a trip to Cayton Bay yesterday. What a wonderful beach; clean, a bit wild but safe, fossil hunting, not busy, no extraneous nonsense (just a tea/butty cabin & some loos), £3 to park at the surf school. The kids (5 & 10) loved it & we’ll be back. Finished it off with fish & chips atop the cliffs at Filey (nice spot at the northern end through Filey Brigg Country Park). Couldn’t have been better. Cheers STW.

Yeah it is a great beach isn't it? Did you go crabbing too? That's always the highlight of our days at the beach.

Crabbing? We took the gear but the tide was too high. We were there 3 hours either side of high tide but I'm guessing the rock pools don't get exposed until nearer low water...?

Not that sure TBF - we just take the stuff and if we can see rocks we go crabbing, if we can't see any we don't 🙂

What about some fossil hunting?

Can't beat Robin Hoods Bay when the tides out 🙂
