any recommendations?
Reconditioned?
1) You'll be hard pressed to buy a £500 laptop that doesn't meet such stringent requirements. (What does "video capability" mean?)
2) Lenovo for build quality.
3) Dell Outlet for a bargain.
Look back here later in the week, easy to get a recent gen i5, separate graphics etc 1920 screen for that price.

Thisis ok, have one at work. Only negative is half height return key and backslash in the wrong place.
I have one of these. Had it 14 months. Been around the country with it. Very satisfied. Basically a 12" tablet. Portable. Light. Removable keyboard. Short travel keys. Battery life about 7 hours, just under their claimed 8 hours (must turn wi-fi and bluetooth off). Includes a smart pen for drawing. One of the best features for me, use it for noting photographs in my line of work. £449.99
I agree with @jeffl
Apart from being a completely slag to get the back off (not that you'd want to with 8GB RAM and a decent SSD as standard) they're a good, robust machine - they're plastic chassis / case so a bit more flexy than a Dell Lati, but unless you want a re-con / returned machine they're cheaper.
Generic screen too so if you drop it they're about £40 fitted to replace, rather than the nightmare of a bonded in screen.
(I've supplied a few hundred of them, or ones like it)

I've had 3 from the outlet, 2 refurb, 1 scratch and dent, apart from the packaging I couldn't tell them from new machines. Worth just waiting until they refill the stock, think it's tomorrow
This can be had for £529 with quidco and discount code in the comments
An SSD is the best upgrade you can do - so either look for ones with a decent sized SSD, or budget a bit more. Makes a massive difference to boot, and general day to day use.
Remember that office is usually in addition to the machine or a 30day trial or maybe even a year on offuce365 but after that it is a yearly subscription unless you already have it or have a deal through work.
Just a heads up as it is easy to miss and will eat a lot of your budget

I see what you did there.

There's plenty of options here. HUP programme, student pricing, Office free online, Libre Office...
A used Dell XPS if you can get your hands on one.
If it's just for general duties, then stay away from anything with a dedicated graphics card /chip as that will add needless costs.
I'd say any 4 core or better processor.
SSD drive.
8gb ram is preferable, but 4gb is ok.
Then it just comes down to preferences for screen size and form factor really. A bigger screen will be more expensive, but also more bulky to cart around, which defeats the purpose of having a laptop.

??
Opinion time really a proper 15/15.6 is still fine, it's. Not the size but the face it's a self. Contained pc that makes the difference, make it too small and you just have a tablet and keyboard!
I've been looking at a refurbished dell from scan.
It's £375 on the scan today only page.
Can anyone tell me if it's decent for the money?
This one.
I'd say no, 4th get I5 so guite old for the cash, the SSD will be the only upgrade
I got this for 380 from the Dell outlet a month ago

Ah good to know .
I wasn't too sure on the processor. I just saw i5 and thought it looked decent.
Will keep an eye out for laptops on dell outlet.
At the same level I7>I5>I3

But the 5xxx tells you the generation of the processor so a new I3 can be better than an old I5 etc.
