You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hi all,
It's been a while since I last bought a laptop (2009?!) so I am somewhat out the loop as to what is around these days, and hoping for a few personal recommendations rather than putting myself through the marketing patter of the PCworld sales person!
My needs-
Decent battery life
Dvd drive
3 USB ports
Good screen
Something relatively 'future proof' be good to go another 6 years on the next machine!
Let me know about your experiences, both good and bad...
Thanks in advance!
Joe
I'm in the same boat, buying DD1 her first laptop. Buying Laptops is such a pain, so much easier to buy Macs. Currently looking at John Lewis, at least if you buy a lemon from them you can take it back and exchange it without too much fuss.
In terms of longevity the new Intel 6th Generation Core processors are just out but hard to find a machine under £500 with them in. I'm looking for a i5 (or equivalent) 5th or 6th gen equipped, full HD screen with an optical drive.
Yes, I'm looking at a couple of i5 machines too. If I can put up with a white laptop, the Lenovo ideapad is looking good for the price
Macbook pro and a cheapy external drive? Lovely machines.

Build quality seems good, it is heavy. But by heck it is quick - and one, single bit of inbuilt app spammyness to uninstall.
And what's wrong with the MacBook pro route - if I had over 500 to spend, and wanted a future-proof machine that's be where my money goes.
Retina screen is fantastic, battery life is awesome. I'd work around the DVD drive limitation - but it may not work for him.
500
So, tell me again how much a macbook pro is?
OP; do you mean greater than or less than £500 to spend?
You've put greater than......

>£500 - as asked for..
If you mean less than £500 - you're not looking for a MacBook pro
Arg monday morning pre coffee typo causes STW chaos...
I meant LESS than £500.
Matt that Cube is a monster... Good spec for the price.
I guess my point being that the site had less powerful, same casing, models last week. Worth a good look - it is heavy, but seems as well built as our old Lenovo...

Damned by faint praise..?
I've been looking at this sort of thing as well. I've been surprised by how poor the build quality is. I'd have thought £500 would have been a hotly contested price point. I've narrowed it down to a 13" Asus Zenbook or a basic HP Envy. The Asus hard drive is tiny and there is no DVD player but the Envy doesn't have a great screen and, for the £500 one, an AMD chip. Interested to hear other suggestions.
Reconditioned macbook pro or second hand
Nothing against windows (that i can say online) still use one, but the construction of laptops is a total pitta it has put me off (as well as the OS UI)
Got a mac pro and a mac air and i am a happy chappy
