Looking around for a new vehicle. The XC90 I have is great in terms of space, comfort and being able to sling bikes and gear in the back without being to precious about it. But its just too expensive and heavy and fuel hungry.

Was looking at the Berlingo/Partner and they tick every box except the tow limit is pitiful. I need to tow a 6 berth caravan (a pretty lightweight one).

So, what can the STW hive mind recommend? Towing duties and utilitarian (wife has the family car)

Bigger. Bog towing. Comfy. Great family lugger.

Yeah, Galaxy.
We wanted a Berlingo but had to have a decent tow limit to pull our caravan so we went for the Galaxy instead.
Now we’ve chopped the caravan in for a motorhome we’ve gone for the Berlingo, mind!

you can get it from the classified or rather somewhere from the local Car towing services to get the best value. It will help you to find out your desired car within your specified range.

Say what?

Dispatch Combi / Spacetourer. The smallest one is shorter than the long Berlingo but has a decent towing limit (over 2 tonnes I think). Real price is significantly less than list price.

Depending on when you passed your test, IIRC Mondeo Estate sized cars have the largest real world towing capacity, i.e. you don't want a car with a MAM as it eat's into the 3.5t you're allowed for car + trailer, whilst at the same time keeping the weight of the trailer <85% the weight of the car. The other option was the poverty spec swb, low roof transit, only about 600kg load capacity, but that left a ton of towing capacity.

Proace Verso - really very nice 🙂 My neighbour sells them, apparently retail sales are very low at the moment so deals are there to be done!

It really isn't inside. Imo yeti is quite small, especially the boot.

£30 tax

You can get some big old cars with low tax. Our V70 is £20 for 2lt diesel.

Is it big enough to get a bike in wheels on with seats down?

Dispatch Combi / Spacetourer.

Proace Verso

If you're buying new then the latest Dispatch (or the Peugeot or Vauxhal or Toyotal version) take it for a long test drive and see how it feels - its quite a cramped  if you're tall (my head touches the roof) and the top edge of the windscreen is pretty low - you can't see traffic lights if you're at the front of the queue and if you put the sun visor down you can't see anything!. There rear view mirror is also very low and means you can't really see where you're going when you're turning left. The wing mirrors are... shit.

If you're under 6 foot it might be fine but its surprisingly tight on space for the size of vehicle. But for novelty they've put the handbrake back on the left.

Bought a Yeti in the end. Pick it up on Wednesday.
Looks perfect for what I wanted. One of the best tow cars around. Three separate rear seats that fold all the way forward and are removeable if need be (think Renault Scenic). Easily fit two bikes and passenger in the rear. Skoda do an internal bike rack which looks good, but I need to figure out if I can convert it for thru axles. Lovely to drive, comfortable seats, plenty of gadgets...
