Looking at replacing one of our cars soon with something like a berlingo. It won’t be doing a huge amount of miles as it won’t be used for work and only used for short trips to the shops, but it will also be our “holiday” car so will do a handful of long Uk trips a year.

Thinking petrol may be a better choice, but just wanted some advice on similar vehicles and perhaps what to watch out for.

Looking at spending £5-6k.

We love ours in that role. I think you need a basic dog grill on the rear seat head rests to really load it. I think the pre Euro 4 turbo diesel had a reputation for blowing the turbo.

I bought a 2019 Berlingo last Octobre with Petrol engine. Really like it and performs fine for short journeys. Really wish I'd bought one years ago.

On our third one.

Hopefully our next one will be electric.

Comfy upright driving position with good visibility for me at 6ft 2 with fully working knees - even drove bourg d'oisan to Amsterdam ferry in our old one in one hit without stopping bar fueling up just before the ferry

Good load capacity.....for bikes or timber. Have even brought engines and gear boxes home in the old one.

Tail gates great for getting changed under .... The boot being flat is great for changing bairns nappy or getting your wetsuit off out of the wind.

Sliding side doors are just the dogs ballocks in carparks for getting the bairn in.

10/10 would buy again

They're kinda clunky and boat like and a bit plastic-y inside but we absolutely love ours. +1 to all the above it's a brilliant family car for outdoorsy people.

We are needing to get ours replaced but I can't find one... Puggy Partner Tepee Outdoor (so. Citroen Berlingo Multispace XTR...looking to find the last of the model before this one...so a 2018 I think...can't seem to find them or the ones I have found seem to be higher mileage and a high asking price. Not what I'm looking for which is a bit annoying!

What years are good in terms of reliability?

Not sure what euro 4 means.

I have found seem to be higher mileage and a high asking price.

Prices are insane.

Looking around a 2015 with same milage we have now seems to be asking the same price at garages as we paid in 2018 with 5000miles.

How ever it's pretty much the same hikes across the board what ever the brand by the looks of it

I looked for something along these lines over the last month or so. As above prices were silly for berlingos and all the Peugeot’s were converted disability wagons with the issues they bring. There weren’t many about in my area either. Those that were advertised, the vast majority were the 1.6td which has a poor rep. Got a petrol 1.6 Skoda roomster in the end, probably not as large as a berlingo but rear seats come out completely so fairly cavernous in the back

The 1.6td is absolutely fine, just make sure you keep on top of the yearly oil change and it is absolutely fine. If you are mechanically minded, changing the fluid before the year service is also great, but don't go beyond the year before changing the fluid and it should be trouble-free (based on personal experience and what I've read and heard elsewhere).

the 1.6HDI is found in a wide range of cars from fords and volvos to minis.

The early early models had a pisspoor rep for oil starvation to turbo but your not buying one of those for 5-6k unless your having your pants pulled down

Not sure what euro 4 means.

Emissions standards, so Euro6 has just come in. When low emissions zones are created they're based on those so if you live near a big town it's important.

Euro 7 in 2025 is expected to effectively ban IC engines for normal cars.

I was told the root cause was leaking injector seals spitting out carbon into the cylinder head which then causes the blockages.

Modern synthetic oil itself won't break down in a year.

Which is only a part story in it's self.

They had poorly designed injector clamp bolts which were stretch torque but only they kept stretching which let the injectors come loose.

But you couldn't just keep torquing them as eventually torquing to the as specified value would yield them.

The engines that were pre euro 4 were meant to have more vunerable turbos. But sound like this shouldn't be an issue as they are now older models

As above prices were silly for berlingos and all the Peugeot’s were converted disability wagons with the issues they bring.

There’s much of the problem, they’re both very popular for Motability clients, the majority are adapted in one way or another, most often with a ramp in the back, and because of age/mileage the mods are nearly always left in - Motab clients tend to hold onto them longer than most other vehicles, so they tend to be older, the mileage is usually higher, so it’s not cost effective to have the vehicle returned to standard configuration; the mods run to hundreds/thousands of pounds in the first place. Also, there’s a big market for them among taxi drivers, at least in Ireland, because in order to get a license, you have to have a wheelchair-adapted vehicle. I found that out talking to an Irish driver who’d come over to pick up a car from where I work, and she was driving it straight to the ferry back home. It wasn’t the first one she’d come across to pick up, either.
Un-modified ones will be fetching higher prices as a result anyway, then add on the higher prices being asked for secondhand cars as well…
Personally I hate them, I find the older ones horribly uncomfortable, because I can’t get the seat back far enough, and the stupid footrest next to the brake/clutch pedal prevents me straightening my leg out - having said that, I have noticed that some seem to have more seat adjustment, but it might be they’re newer models, I don’t keep track of model year, I’m too busy. I’ve always found the Doblo to be a nicer drive anyway, the Vauxhall equivalent isn’t bad, and the Transit is a great little van

Skoda Yeti?
The ones I looked at all seemed to have been very well looked after - maybe they appeal to a certain type!

I bought an excellent condition, full main dealer service history, 11 plate, for £3500 recently.
Loads of room, very comfortable driving position, good spec, rear seats can be taken out.
It's a 2ltr TDI, not the 4x4, and I'm getting 55-57mpg commuting to work on A roads and country lanes.
