After a year of pondering following my last thread on the subject, I think I’m finally ready to take the plunge on one of the above. I basically want a van but being a company car driver who’s opting out, I’m not allowed.

Looking at something 4 ish years old and hopefully either an XTR Berlingo or Outdoor Partner, which I think are the top of the range models. Due to budget, it’ll probably have 40-60k miles on the clock.

Questions, I’m assuming that as the back seats come fully out, you can easily fit 1 or 2 bikes stood up with both wheels on? And has anyone got any other pearls of wisdom before I take the plunge?

what is your budget - if its anything like what i saw when i was lookin the other month there youll be looking at between 5-6k for that list of wants on an outdoor/XTR

Outdoor/XTR come with the full curtain airbags and individually removable rear seats - this is well worth it - the non individual ones are not removable.

bikes go in fully built standing up no bother SO LONG as you dont get the internal roof rack or the Multi roof thing they do - as it eats into the height.

Budget for 60 quid for a moulded rubber boot mat from Simply carmats (comes under the rear seats and stops just behind the front seats) so keeps bike detrius out the carpet and leaves it just needing a sweep

I have the internal roof bars...but also a dropper post so it all fits nicely.

3 complete bikes no bother with seats out, 3 bodies and 3 bikes with front wheels off.

Seriously practical vehicle, absolutely love the one I drive. Missing cruise control, I've got a cruise stalk but can't find anyone who can update the ecu and bsi for it to work...so if you like cruise control, make sure you have a good search...should have 4 stalks at the steering wheel if it is fitted.

I'm getting about 600 miles out a tank, 14 miles commute daily (7 miles each way) and running about at weekends...

I had a VTR (NOT an XTR) seats can be removed but the double seat is heavy!

1.6d Loved it. Drove it for 4 years and 100k miles. More reliable than the volvo which replaced it.

Budget is £7-7.5k, the lower the better obviously. Having looked on Autotrader and eBay that seems about the going rate for what I'm after, there's a few in the £6k range but all seem to be up in Scotland, which is where I 'think' you are trail_rat?

And is this the boot liner you're talking about as it sounds like a very good idea.

This is why I asked

I picked up a 15 plate outdoor with 5000 miles for under 9k in january -and there were a few options to get these in Edinburgh -as happened I liked the colour and wheel options on this one best so bought it.

Which seemed far better value than the £5-6k >50k miles ones I had been looking at

Is the boot mat I went with as that way when you flick seats up to put bike in the whole floor is covered.

The one you linked to only covers the boot area.

For me this was one of the worst changes from my previous shape berlingo to this shape was them doing away with the rubber liner that used to come standard in the old ones.

Of course the Berlingo is the STW MPV of choice, but having had a skim online the Ford Tourneo Connect seems to appeal a bit more, but is never mentioned.

Any reason it never gets a recommendation?

Thanks, I read boot mat on those ones and saw the price and assumed they weren't right. I did think the dimensions of the one I linked to where wrong!

I can't really stretch to £9k, it'd be nice but £7.5 is the limit really.

hugo, next door neighbour has one in that colour as a mobility vehicle. I think they look nicer and the only reason I'm not looking is the jump in price for the same age/mileage.

cost mostly. look at the price of a tourneo.

base model costs as much as the berlingo bells and whistles model.

fair enough re costs , it was a thought to spend that much on a car - theres no doubt about that , ive never spent that on a car before.

What's the autobox like on these? Or is manual the best choice?

Got ours a year ago and there were on the 90bhp one across Scotland, looks like things have swapped round in the last year.

That exploded diagram of the Torneo with bike in is how I use the Tepee...except it is back wheel in first.

Auto is meant to be OK, you get extras with the auto by default...like the hill start and I think the tyre pressure sensors and maybe the stop/start (unsure about last one though).

I was warned off the auto on here by a guy who I know is a citroen/Peugeot tech . Limited sales high repair cost.

I have auto hill start -which I actually quite like and tire pressure monitoring which I hate.

These cars seem like the most usable and most practical load lugging family motors. And they're cheap too so you won't worry about them

The problem is they're so damn ugly. I know it's a van based car, but blimey, they're bad

Only the higher spec  berlingos have the rear three seat split. Vtr and what not is a double and a single. Xtr is three separate. All can be lifted out but the xtr is the way forward. I leave the middle seat out in ours permanently for the bike. I can get my bike in ok with the interior bars in situ as well.

Lower specs tend not to have air con.

Xtr etc have a nicer centre console.

Not sure about the Peugeot spec wise.

I know it isn't a van, but the FIAT Multipla is an incredibly versatile alternative. The rear seats detach easily leaving you with 3 separate seats in the front.

I have rented a Partner Tepee when travelling around France and it was great for transporting the mt bikes and all our crap.  Depending on the bike size they go straight in the back and the sliding side doors makes loading them up much easier.  Passenger Seats folded right up.

Downside, well the 1.6L diesel is pretty gutless, but good economy.

The thing is pretty fugly!!!!
